A youngster with an elbow cyst that Dave diagnosed a few months ago.

The horse was intermittently lame but worse after getting up.
This was diagnosed by clinical exam and radiography without nerve blocks.

These cases are uncommon and prognosis can be a bit unpredictable as some of them collapse without surgery.

This case was managed conservatively and is currently in full training and doing well. Surgical treatment would have involved placement of a screw across the cyst to stimulate bone growth and filling.

Well, and just like that another jump season is over.
We are thankful to all of our clients for trusting us in looking after their racehorses for this season. Ultimately, you guys are responsible for the success of our little practice.

Now the focus switches over to the flat season and horses in training sales before finally we all head off for a bit of deserved holiday, hence the background picture.

2025 is going to be a very important year for all of us with some great news and changes.

All our vets, nurses and admin staff look forward to 25-26 and we wish you the best for the upcoming season.

This is a fracture of the top part of the arm (humerus) in a horse, which happened as a consequence of a traumatic injury in a field.

The fracture involves the proximal part of the affecting the dorsal tubercles down almost to tuberosity. It also looked intra-articular, involving the - I didn’t add another scan picture but there was visible in the joint itself.

You can see the fracture plane very well on acute images ( and ) - this horse was treated conservatively (had about a year off) and ran and won after.

Lady Luck gave us a hand here as typically shoulder fractures don’t carry a great

It’s interesting to see how well it healed dorsally, probably due to constant pressure from muscle onto the actual fractured element.

Anyway we saved another life and all is good in the jungle.

An interesting (cool) case we dealt with this week. This horse was lame in front and blocked to intra-articular anaesthesia of the right elbow.
Diagnostic imaging showed an enthesophyte to the attachment of the distal, medial collateral ligament of elbow which matched what we could see on ultrasound scans. Scans showed some damage to the medial collateral ligament of elbow, and there was also a bit of visible joint distension.

This is pretty uncommon injury and in my experience it happens when horses do the splits with their front legs, sometimes chasing each other round in a field.

I don’t think there is much we can do for this one apart letting nature run its course and allow time for the ligament to heal over. The joint can obviously be injected with a bit of cortisone but perhaps that’s not indicated at current stage.

So hopefully this horse will be back in full training in a few months.

πŸ‡πŸ’‰πŸš‘ I forgot to share this one a while ago!
I hadn’t seen (β€œel pincho gordo”) in 15 years. Last time we had a dinner it was in Lexington and it was 2009.
At the airport we had to drop each other live location pins as he’s got fatter and I got bald so we didn’t recognise each other at first sight.
True friendships last forever.
