I’m delighted to say that yesterday beautiful, kind, gentle Lizzie flew through her vetting and will be off to her new home by the weekend!

Her new mum will have such fun getting to know her and she will be given all the time she needs to mature into the amazing little lady we know she will become!

Lizzie has been a joy to have on the yard and we will miss her lovely face 💖

Let’s discuss the unicorn in the room…. Unrealistic expectations!!

I’ve seen a few wanted adverts recently and had a few enquiries with wanted lists and unrealistic accompanying price tags that left me banging my head against the wall 🤦‍♀️

You CANNOT have all 3 of these things. Yes, “Karen” has probably found one of them 20years ago that she bought for £1 and it turned out to be her 5* eventer…. (So yes, it is POSSIBLE…) but…. The £1 horse probably didn’t have a 5 stage vetting with X-rays that it was expected to pass with 100% perfection and it probably took a lot of hard work and time to produce the horse into that 5* eventer and therefore by definition, it wasn’t actually cheap because it took a lot of time and money to develop.

I see and hear it so often “I’ve been looking for months, had X number of horses fail the vet, been up and down the country to see horses that were misdescribed” …. I get that there are some rogues out there and I don’t envy buyers. But…. Sometimes…. Be more realistic. And be more critical before getting in the car. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

It costs thousands to put a quality foal on the floor. It costs thousands more to keep it to 3/4years old and then it costs thousands to break it and have it at a stage where most people could safely ride it - even then it will still be very green! So we are into 5 figures and it’s only just under saddle….

NO that doesn’t mean that just because every horse cost X means it’s worth the same or more - some don’t make the grade, some aren’t easy, some don’t xray/don’t vet - but these are therefore the horses that will fall into the lower budgets. You cannot expect to have perfection for a low budget. Something has to give!

A riding club horse does not need a perfect vetting - yes your insurer might want a perfect vetting, but do you need insurance? And if you need insurance and the low budget horse is likely to throw “something” up on vetting that you’re worried will cause an exclusion, do you need the vetting?! (I’m going to get blasted for that comment 😅) Or do you need a more experienced friend/trainers opinion and then buy and insure it without a vetting if it’s at a price level where it’s not needed? Most insurers don’t require a vetting under £5k unless you want loss of use and then we get back to the point that your £5k horse is unlikely to pass the vetting cleanly and therefore you’ll have exclusions…. And please let’s vet for purpose, don’t get me started on the vets that vet “Bob the cob” as if he’s going to the Olympics…

✅ Be realistic about what you want/can afford and what you can actually ride
✅ Be prepared to make compromises
✅ Be more critical of adverts purporting to offer a unicorn for next to no money
✅ Enlist the help of a more experienced friend/trainer to guide you
❌ don’t rule out an older horse or one that requires maintenance if it does your job
❌ do not expect perfection if you haven’t got a big enough budget

I’m sure this will bring out the “it’s not fair, not everyone has a huge budget to spend on a horse” argument. Well guess what, LIFES not fair… those with a big budget can afford to have a long wish list and wait for said unicorn! Everyone else, needs to be realistic 😅

Edit to add - this post is talking about the sane, sensible horses… you CAN have sound, talented and cheap….. but I guarantee it will be quirky or difficult and most people can’t ride those 😅

🌟🐴 RAYLA UPDATE! 🐴🌟

So I promised you some up to date pics of Rayla and here’s the first bunch!!

Her first time sat on in about 2 months and she was fab, no silliness at all and in fact nice and steady.

She feels 100% different than she did a couple of months ago, she’s really strengthened and is twice the horse she was!

New shoes going on today, she will have a few days hacking about (we know she is super out and about!), she will have a jump, she has a Chiro treatment along with the rest of the yard next week and then she will be ready to rock and roll!

🦄TOP CLASS POTENTIAL EVENT PONY! 🦄

Lizzie really is the whole package!

14.2h, 4 year old Connemara mare, she has the looks, brain, paces, and scope to excel in any sphere as she progresses through her training

Lizzie is a delight to have on the yard. She has a wonderful, kind, sweet, patient and gentle temperament. She ties up patiently and loves any attention that you can give her, she is great to catch and shoe, she doesn’t mind one bit if you leave her on her own on the yard, she lives in or out happily, loads and travels in a lorry and a trailer and is super to take out on arena hires or schooling.

Lizzie stands like a rock at the mounting block and will wait quietly for as long as it takes you to doe your pedals and gather up the knitting. Lizzie is a super hack alone or in company, she does everything in a snaffle, doesn’t get hot or silly, is happy to be in front or behind, is not all spooky and is good in traffic. She is very happy to stand and wait for you without fussing whilst you have a long chat with the neighbours.

She has been xc schooling, she jumps ditches and water, she has started her education over coloured fences without being over jumped and is happily jumping round courses in trot or canter and she has popped 1.10m with ease when she had a loose jump.

She is an extremely smart stamp of a pony. Although 14.2h she very much rides like a horse with a lovely length of rein and she takes up the leg well. She definitely feels like a horse in a small package rather than a pony!

Lizzie has 3 balanced paces, obviously she is green in her training (she is 4 after all and hasn’t been rushed or over produced) but she has never put a foot wrong here in her behaviour and we think a lot of this very pretty lady.

She really does have a ton of potential in any sphere with the right rider and her education being continued and she will be your best friend whilst doing it.

🥰🦄 RAYLA UPDATE! 🦄🥰

Regular followers of the page will remember the beautiful Rayla.

This wonderful little lady arrived just before Christmas at the end of her three-year-old year having been lightly backed, she had a few weeks in the field when she first arrived from Ireland, then we got her going gently again.

Super sweet to ride, she worked very nicely in the school, was super to hack and kind and genuine to a fence.

With this incredibly long and wet winter that we had, I very much felt that she needed a little bit of time as she was very weak in her frame and so she went back out in the field as the spring grass came through to give her time to mature and strengthen up a bit.

Fast forward a couple of months and just look at her now!

She came in from the field last week and I put her on the long reins for a quick session just to see how she was looking and WOW!

I do very much love a good transformation and whilst she always looked well in her weight I could see that at this time of year another break would do her good- the difference in her stride is amazing and I think you’d all agree that if you don’t know, you wouldn’t think it was the same horse.

This is where it can sometimes be a little frustrating when selling 4 year olds. People (myself very much included) don’t want to see babies being ragged over huge fences to ‘see their potential’ but don’t always have the vision or experience to see what they will actually become once they have matured and furnished up. So Rayla here is a prime example the benefits of being able to look to the future! 🥰

Rayla is 15h, 4 years old and is a registered Connemara mare. She will be getting back into work this week then she will be looking for her new 🏠, we will update all her pics and videos with her new beautiful beefy look!

I love you so, so much.

This is my favorite photo of my beautiful wife. It’s from our wedding day in 2021 and it was the best day ever. People will talk about G's smile, and it was incredible—it would make you feel like you were the center of the universe. But what I love about this photo is how it captures her strength. She was a strong, beautiful, phenomenal woman who just loved everything and everyone.

Working in the equestrian world is not an easy life; there are a lot of knocks and dark days. But G would navigate this by throwing so much joy and love at every situation. She would get as much joy from having a Greggs tea on the way home from the gallops as she would teaching a client in the pouring rain or jumping and galloping around biggest courses in the world. It was just incredible to be at your side and feel this energy.

I’m so proud to be your husband.

Rest in peace, my beautiful girl.

I don’t want this to sound like a thank you speech, but there are some people that I’d like to acknowledge and thank. The team at Bicton, who were beyond words in their care for Debbie, Diana, and me in the immediate aftermath; Tim, Jonelle, and their beautiful kids for getting me through the first 24 hours; and the Wolf Pack for being there ever since. There have been so many incredible messages of support, and I’m sorry for not getting back to more of you, but please know that they have been read and are so appreciated.

Seeing the purple and white ribbons has been amazing. But on an even more basic level, when you’re out competing this weekend, please just smile at each other, don’t feel awkward about laughing, and above all, try and love everything and everyone.

🦄😍 WOWSERS!! 😍🦄

HAVE A LOOK AT HAMISH!!

This fabulous fella is 4 years old, standing just under 15.2h at the moment, will probs grow a smidge more, he’s a registered Connemara gelding and JUST LOOK AT HIM!

This is his first time in the school here (his second time only in a school since being backed two weeks ago) I’ll say that again for those in the back, this is only his second time in the school since being backed 🤩 😂

He has been with the fab Clara at CDM Equestrian for a couple of weeks while I was a bit short of regular help to get him going (I’m too old and too broken to throw myself on the babies with nary a care on my own nowadays), I picked him up on Sunday, he had a day on the long reins yesterday and this was him today.

There was a lot going on around him, horses being lunged and jumped in the school next door and he was a very very good boy!

Clara was delighted to report that he was exceptionally good to get started under saddle and I have videos of him being sat on for the first time, hacking out, having his first canter, being led out from another horse and stepping over his first log.

He is an incredibly smart chap, forward thinking with a bold outlook, he has a lovely temperament, loves plenty of attention and I can lead him in and out of the field in a bunch of three

Hamish is available to go to his new home now if someone is looking for a handsome chap to bring on for fun and success in any sphere, otherwise he will continue his education and his 💰 will increase accordingly

He is a wonderful stamp of an overheight Connemara with all the fantastic bits that go with this amazing breed!

I’d like to introduce Lizzie!

This incredibly smart mare has everything you could possibly need and want in a young horse.

She is forward and responsive without being at all sharp or spooky, is absolutely stunning to look at and she has the most sweet, smiley, happy nature.

4 years old, 14.2h, registered Connemara mare, Lizzie is the most exquisite looking young lady with a temperament to match.

Beautifully and slowly produced with her future in mind, she hasn’t been rushed or over jumped.

She is a wonderfully kind, calm, happy mare who is a responsive ride without being sharp or spooky and is a real ‘horse in a pony size body’ type. She hacks out, is working very nicely in the school for her age, is trotting and cantering sweetly round a small course of fences, has been out on arena hire and has done absolutely everything asked of her with a smile on her face. Lizzie travels in a lorry or a trailer. She stands like a rock at the mounting block and waits patiently while you fiddle with your pedals and knitting.

A pleasure to have on the yard, she is settled and happy, doesn’t give one fig if she is on her own when the others go out, loves a brush and a cuddle and ties up patiently.

Top class event potential for a capable rider who can be safe in the knowledge that she hasn’t been hammered too early.

She really is absolutely stunning with a temperament to match, she has a great future ahead of her in the right hands

What a fabulous young lady this beautiful mare is.

She is an exceptionally smart, very athletic type with a fantastic temperament


This was her first time in the school here, horses were jumping in the arena next door and she took it all in her stride.

Standing just over 14.2h now with growing to do, 4 years old registered Connemara and a WONDERFUL colour, Lizzie has been slowly and kindly produced very much with her future in mind, I have lovely video of her popping very calmly and sweetly around a small course of fences, she has done plenty of hacking on her own and in company and will be getting out and about here with us over the next couple of days.

She has been out on arena hires, she travels very nicely in a trailer and has been a joy to have on the yard since she arrived here earlier in the week.

🐴⭐️ NEWBIE ALERT! ⭐️🐴

I’d like to introduce Lizzie!

Lizzie is a 4yo full Connemara mare, standing a smidge over 14.2h currently.

This wonderful lady arrived from not too far away yesterday, she walked into her stable like she’d been here forever, munched her hay as all the other horses came in and out, had an afternoon snooze and didn’t bat an eyelid being on her own on the yard when all the others went out.

She has the most wonderful kind temperament and I’m looking forward to doing a bit with her!
