Build up your dog checking in by acknowledging and rewarding those moments when they look at you.
Your dog will end up doing it more, and these are basically free behaviours you can encourage.
If you ignore them or take these moments for granted, the dog will reduce and stop doing it.
Give it a try for a week and see the difference.

Turbo charge your recall by adding more energy!
The key tips to add in are:
1. Call them excitedly โ add energy to your voice.
2. Move away โ As you call them, move away from them (Massive visual cue for them to respond to)
3. Play chase me โ Run and get them to chase you, not the other way round.
4. Use at least 3 rewards โ In this video Iโm using 3 reps of high-speed chase the sausage. (Note Iโm using the same reinforcer for both recalls)
5. Catch them unaware โ Make it something that happens unexpectedly during their day.
6. Practice with no or low distractions initially, then proof the behaviour around different distractions.
You are aiming for the dog to respond rapidly each time, so your recall cue becomes something that becomes automatic by positively startling them into chasing you.
Give it a go and have the best fun with your dog.

A lot of people expect their young dogs to grow out of unwanted behaviours.
While to a degree a dog will mellow after a few years, if the behaviour has some reinforcement (this could be environmental reinforcement or it just feels good), then the dog will continue to do it.
I would always recommend interrupting any unwanted behaviour and getting the dog onto a more suitable task.
This is where having a solid foundation of core behaviours is important, especially when trained around distractions.
This way, we can ask the dog to do something they are fluent in to reduce them doing something we donโt want.
In effect, we are prompting the dog to do what we want in those situations and helping them learn how to behave rather than hoping they will behave.

Try this simple tip if your dog jumps when you give them food rewards.
Instead of bringing the food down to them, which encourages them to meet you halfway.
Bowl the food to them like you would a bowling ball.
As the food comes to them at the same height as their mouth, they no longer need to jump up, but instead move toward you.

A bit of New Year's fun.
When I'm out, I'm always surprised by some of the suggestions of what breed the dogs I have with me are.
Can you correctly guess the breeds of these two?
Answer in the comments, and I'll like the correct comments.
Happy New Year!!

The majority of dogs struggle around certain distractions.
It takes a lot of effort to teach your dog to cope with them.
The world is full of a lot of things that draw your dogโs attention across all their senses.
How we help dogs to cope with distractions comes down to how well we can get them to respond to core behaviours.
These core behaviours are things like their name, sit, down or anything else they know well.
The fluency of these core behaviours will determine how likely they will respond around distractions.
Too many distractions and they might not respond to their name, let alone do something complex like a leg weave or similar.
Getting a dog to a point where they can fluently do these behaviours with low level distractions e.g. at home, is the starting point.
So, if your dog wonโt fluently interact with you in the house, what chance do we have in a busy/exciting environment or where there is something like another dog they are reacting to?

Creating behaviour is all about rehearsal and reinforcement.
Without training, your dog will rehearse behaviours you donโt want.
If the dog finds something works for them, they will do it more and more.
In fact, this is how we can tell if a behaviour is being reinforced, as if there is no reinforcement, the behaviour stops happening.
Reinforcement might not always be what you think it is โ it could be you telling your dog off is reinforcing as it is interaction.
So, instead, think about what you want your dog to do in a situation and encourage and reinforce that.
Practice makes permanent โ so practice what you want them to do, rather than letting them determine what is the right option in a situation.

Fast responsive recall comes from practice and the right reinforcement.
A lot of people want to be able to call their dogs and not reinforce, but in the long run, the dogs learn there is nothing worth coming back for.
If you went to work and were never paid, would you turn up again and again?
Also, some people want to get their dogs doing the equivalent of 50 press-ups when they get to them before reinforcing. This can be demotivating to the dog and again will reduce drive to return.
Instead, reward them as soon as they get to you. Build up that drive to return, and then when they are engaged you can ask for your 50 press-ups.

Getting your dog to drop a high value item can be difficult. ย
Doing it without conflict can help your dog to trust and avoid them learning to guard items.
Typically a dog will start guarding something if you force it from them.
Donโt dupe them by getting them to drop it and then removing it โ next time they wonโt be as willing.
Also, removing it while they are watching can create feeling of โThatโs mine!โ, so remove it when they arenโt watching.
Practice with low value items and make it a game that leads onto other reinforcement, rather than stops the fun. This replaces the fun with something else and helps them learn to work with you and task switch.

Start as you mean to go on is so true with dogs.
We train dogs to make sure they behave as we want and become obedient and a joy to be around.
Starting with the right approach, encouraging good behaviour, and reducing rehearsal of unwanted behaviour is important.
If we encourage what we want, this becomes automatic and long-term habits.
If we allow behaviours we donโt want to be repeated this makes it more difficult to achieve what we want with our dogs.
But it has to be said that some dogs are more difficult than others and require extra effort and the right approach to make sure we are handling and motivating them in the right way.
In this clip is a young Fox Red Lab that came to our puppy sessions and has also had some 121 sessions since entering adolescence, where his behaviour started to degrade. After a number of sessions, the owner has been complimented about his dogs behaviour and now has the problem of his dog not playing with others and just wanting to interact with him. A nice problem to have.

I hate hearing stories where people have been made to feel bad because their dog has struggled in a certain situation.
A lot of people put a considerable effort into training and improving how their dogs behave. Itโs an ongoing journey.
Hearing how someone has made someone upset without knowing the effort they have put in, the progress made, and understanding the desire to help their dog be the best they can really frustrates me.
If we own dogs and/or are in the profession, we should understand how dogs can be and at least have a little empathy.
We need to judge less, be supportive, and overall be kinder to people who are working to improve how their dogs behave. You donโt know just how much effort people are putting in.
Be kind!!

We love making sure our customers find it as easy as possible to progress their dog's training.
During a training session, even though you might be concentrating as best as possible, there is a lot to take in, plus you are managing a dog while trying to listen.
This is why we aim to provide as much support as possible.
Making sure our customers are able to take away the key points from a session and contact us for more advice, guidance and support as needed to make sure they keep on the right track and benefit as much as possible.
Itโs typically after a session that you might not remember something, or something happens or a technique isnโt working like it did during the session.
Being able to contact the trainer to ask for advice and get the right support can maximise your progress and make sure you develop your dogโs abilities.
