Today I am grateful NOT to be working in clinic. No not to enjoy the sunshine, but to be away from the devastation that heatstroke still causes despite multiple warnings. I am grateful not to be battling to save lives, and witnessing unnecessary deaths of wonderful dogs who would have quite happily missed a walk today.

To all my veterinary colleagues, I just hope you do not have to see too many tragedies today. Sending lots of love and healing as it’s part of our job which should no longer be part of our job and has a huge negative mental impact.

KEEP THOSE DOGS IN THE COOL, AT HOME!

Two-and-a-half-year-old Dexter is a very energetic boy who is looking for an active family who can keep up with him. Dexter loves being out and about, always at the end of his lead sniffing out new and exciting adventures!

He is dog social but enjoys the quieter life at home so would like to be the only pet in the household. Dexter is very affectionate when he gets to know you but can be a little shy and worried at first. Due to this he would like an adult only home with a secure garden where he can explore, play and relax.

If you would like to be considered for Dexter, please email👉 [email protected] 👈 to apply or to see all our pets waiting to be adopted, please visit 👉 www.gawa.org.uk 👈

Meet Summer, one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses!

Summer studied at Hartpury College and graduated in 2021. Since graduation, she has worked in Cheltenham in first opinion practice. Summer is excited for this new adventure in an independent clinic where patient and client care are the top priority.
She has always had a love for animals growing up and would always find a stray or wildlife to bring home and nurse back to health. Her main passion is for in-patient care and as well as having a keen interest in behaviour.
Outside of work, Summer enjoys travelling with her husband, Ben, and spending time with her Jack Russell, Scooby, and Binx the cat.

Leading up to the bank holiday, we wanted to remind people that adders might be enjoying the sunshine this weekend too.

Adders are the only native venomous snakes we have here in the UK. You can recognise them by the zigzag pattern along their back.

They enjoy the sunshine and are most commonly found basking on hillsides and the edges of woodland.

We tend so see a few cases of adder bites in dogs through the spring and summer in Gloucestershire. Sadly, as dogs are inquisitive they can be prone to bites when adders are unintentionally disturbed.

If your dog is bitten please take them to your vet immediately. It is recommended to carry them to reduce the spread of the toxin through the body, if possible applying cool water to the bite will reduce swelling.

Once at the vets we will support your dog providing fluids to maintain circulation, pain relief and sometimes steroids, antibiotics and anti-venom if required.

The signs can vary from just having swelling around the bite, lameness, pain, becoming wobbly, to developing collapse, organ complications and shock. Luckily most cases when treated respond well and survive.

If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch. Have a wonderful bank holiday!

Noise phobias are an extremely common problem for our pets. We mostly see pets about it during fireworks season but it can be an issue all year round for some.

These are some of the more common symptoms of noise phobias:
- hiding
- urinating
- defecating
- chewing
- drooling
- panting
- pacing
- trembling
- barking

It takes time to work on de-sensitisation so now is the ideal time to start ahead of the firework season in the autumn.

We are here to help, our vets and nurses will work with you to assess how severe your pet's noise phobia is before forming a plan that is achievable and suitable for your pet.

The old myths about rapeseed being dangerous are doing the rounds again I see!!

It is not the rapeseed causing dangerous toxic signs. However letting your dog run through rapeseed fields is not advisable not just because of the fertiliser/herbicide that could of been sprayed on it (that would cause toxic signs) but because it’s a farmers produce.
