This haircut involves clipping the hair on a cat’s belly and between their rear legs. These areas often get uncomfortably matted on long-haired cats. It is also popular for cats who live in warmer weather, as they can use the shaved area to lie on a cold floor. If your cat won’t tolerate regular grooming sessions, it can be easier to take them to a professional groomer, so they can clip their fur for you. Your cat will feel more comfortable as a result!

Comb cut/teddy bear cut

This is the most common cat haircut and involves trimming a long-haired cat’s coat down to roughly 1 inch in length. This can help reduce matting and decrease the risk of your cat getting hairballs. If your cat has a skin condition, then the comb cut makes it easier to check their skin, give them a medicated bath, and apply any necessary cream or lotion.

The Hygiene Trim

Some long-haired cats can get matted and dirty hair around their a**s, especially if they’re overweight and can’t groom that area easily. This haircut is also sometimes called a sanitary cut. It helps reduce p**p and litter getting stuck in your cat’s coat and will keep your cat more comfortable. It’s a good option for senior or overweight short-haired cats with limited mobility as well.

Grooming of a cat’s hygiene area is vital, not only for cleanliness but to stop matting. This area is the most susceptible to matting and one of the hardest to groom (for the cat and groomer).
Regular grooming makes it easier for the cat to maintain and less stressful for the cat when groomed.

Why groom shorthaired cats?
To keep them cool, to condition their skin, to remove their undercoat, to help prevent hairballs, to keep your furniture clean.
Some breeds are densely coated and are unable to remove all the undercoat themselves. (pictured is Sky a British shorthair)

Shortening the belly fur is a good way to help keep your cat cool during the warmer weather/months.
This allows them to stay cooler when lying on the floor. They naturally prefer to seek out cooler surfaces to lie on.
As part of our regular grooming we shorten tummy fur in the summer months, it also helps to stop matting in difficult to get to areas.

Did you know a single cat has about 130,000 hairs per square inch of their body? Imagine keeping all that fur under control! For the most part, cats do a great job on their own since they are excellent self-groomers. But every once in a while, their hair gets tangled or matted. When this happens, it’s important to remove the matted cat fur before it causes serious health problems.

Cats Stomachs Can't Digest Hair
When cats groom themselves, they also swallow large amounts of hair. This hair often comes back up in the form of hairballs.
Hair is made of keratin, which is a fibrous structural protein that is resistant to a cat's digestive system. Instead of being fully digested, it either passes through the intestines and is excreted or is regurgitated as a hairball.

Hairballs !
It’s a frightening sight if you’ve never witnessed it before. Whilst most hairs pass through the digestive tract some remain in the stomach.
They can be dangerous if the mass passes to the intestine rather than being vomited up.
Regular grooming will help your cat and short hair cats are as prone to hairballs as long haired cats.

Invest in Good Flea Prevention

Does you cat have itchy skin?. In an attempt to find relief, a cat may overzealously scratch or lick, which can result in the development of wounds and partial baldness.

A common source of itching, are fleas and flea allergies. Its definitely worth all cats being kept on a regular monthly flea preventative, because fleas and flea allergies are a very common source of skin issues in cats.

Veterinary-prescribed preventives are by far the best and using medicines formulated for dogs is definitely not an option. Placing a dog’s flea prevention product on a cat is dangerous because cats are very sensitive to some of the drugs used in dog flea preventives.

Scabs on Cats? What Causes Them and How to Treat Them
Scabs on cats are caused by miliary dermatitis, which takes on many forms, such as feline acne, feline eczema and flea allergy dermatitis.
It can be alarming to pet your cat and find scabs. This feline skin condition is miliary dermatitis, and it takes its name from scabrous sores that resemble millets. Like millet itself, this skin allergy affecting cats is not just one thing, but a symptomatic name that encompasses a range of potential allergens and reactions to them.
First, what is feline miliary dermatitis?
Because cat skin allergies have so many possible causes and provocations, what we refer to as miliary dermatitis goes by several names. Some you may have heard: the feline acne, feline eczema, the colorful and nonspecific “blotch,” the highly descriptive “scabby cat disease,” and flea allergy dermatitis. This last term describes the most common cause of scabs on cats and the one that confounds most cat owners

Hairy Yet Hypoallergenic Cat Breeds
Not all hypoallergenic cat breeds are hairless cat breeds! As unbelievable as it may sound, some of the most hypoallergenic cat breeds are those who sport quite the manes — further proving that it’s the level of FelD1 protein produced and not the cat fur itself that causes you to achoo!
The Siberian:Known for her moderately long coat, the Siberian is the last breed you might expect to land on a list of hypoallergenic cat breeds, but here she is! The Siberian cat actually produces less FelD1 protein and dander than other cat breeds, making her the cat’s meow for allergy sufferers.
Two more for the long-haired team: the Balinese and the Javanese. Like the Siberian, the Balinese (known for her long-haired Siamese beauty), is another one of those hypoallergenic cat breeds who produces fewer FelD1 protein, so her presence is more agreeable to allergy sufferers than, say, a Persian.
Due to his leopard-like looks (he does have Asian Leopard Cat genes in his blood), the Bengal has been a fan favorite with feline fanciers for years, but he’s also an amazing choice when it comes to hypoallergenic cat breeds. Bengals groom themselves less frequently than other breeds, so his fur has a lower count of FelD1 protein, making him an exotic option for your hypoallergenic home!

WHY CATS NEED PROFESSIONAL GROOMING
It is somehow believed that cats groom themselves. But it’s a myth and the only thing they do is lick themselves. They don’t comb out tangles, or shave, or bathe themselves. Cats do get dirty, and smelly, greasy, and matted. That’s why professional cat groomers exist.
Domestic cats absolutely need to get groomed on a regular basis. It is a fact. They have skin, they have hair. Imagine not taking a shower for years, how would that feel. Gross, right?
Cats don’t like water, but so do the majority of the dogs and they still get groomed. Cats should not be an exception. They deserve to look and feel their best.
And that’s what I’ve been trained to do. I can recognize a cat’s personality when I first meet them and can handle most types of cats – shy, compliant, mildly aggressive. The exception is highly aggressive felines which I recommend to get groomed under a light sedation.
