Important information!

❄️ WHAT IS FROSTBITE? ❄️

Frostbite is damage caused to the skin and other tissues as a result of prolonged exposure to extreme cold.

❄️ WHO IS AT RISK OF FROSTBITE? ❄️

Any pet who spends a prolonged period exposed to extremely cold weather has the potential to be affected by frostbite. However, there are some factors which may heighten the risk of your dog getting frostbite:

β€’ Medical conditions that affect blood flow
β€’ Wet fur
β€’ Short hair
β€’ Small in size
β€’ Illness
β€’ Old age

❄️ HOW DOES FROSTBITE OCCUR? ❄️

Prolonged contact with cold temperatures causes the body to close blood vessels that are near the skin to preserve a stable core body temperature.

Blood vessels start to narrow or constrict. Sometimes, this protective mechanism can reduce blood flow to critically low levels in some areas of the body (particularly the extremities). The combination of cold temperatures and reduced blood flow can allow the tissues to freeze, causing severe tissue injury.

You should immediately contact your vet so that they can give the correct advice for your particular situation.

❄️ Keeping our dogs safe in the cold! ❄️

Corrrr, its cold out there Adventurers!

The weather has definitely taken a rather cold turn in recent days and looks like it will be getting even colder! πŸ₯Ά

So how do we go about keeping our pups safe in below freezing temperatures?

❄️ Coats are the best thing we can do for our pups, especially for our short haired breeds and for smaller dogs. Make sure if you are taking your dog out they are wrapped up warm. We wrap ourselves up, we should do the same with our pups.

❄️ Keep antifreeze out of reach of dogs, this is extremely dangerous for our 4 legged friends. Even a small amount can be toxic. If you think your pup may have ingested some, call your vet and take them straight there.

❄️ Grit is prominent everywhere at the moment, on paths and roads but this can irritate dogs paws and get caught between their toes. It can also be harmful if licked so when your dogs get in from a winter wander, give there paws a quick brush off.

❄️ Keep an eye on the temperature! Just as it can be too hot for our dogs to be walked it can also be too cold! See the attached picture for guidance. Remember its not just the temperature shown on our beloved weather apps!! We also need to take into account if the ground is damp, the sun is out....all those factors!

We will avoid walking the dogs at our field if temperatures are extremely cold! All dogs in our care still have access to our garden and a whole variety of mentally stimulating toys along with each other to play with but our priority is the safety of all our dogs. πŸ’™
Remember no dog died from missing a walk but being walked in extreme temperatures can be fatal.

Wrap up and stay warm!

We truly have some incredible clients!

We've had an absolute blast looking after all our pups this year and to receive so many lovely messages and gifts is slightly overwhelming ❀️

We are feeling the love here at HQ. Almond has enough treats to last her a good while and clearly is very excited to open these!!

After getting some pretty awesome socks - today we've received a personalised Bean Beanie!! Perfect for the cold weather ahead!

Much love from both of us here at HQ to all our clients πŸ’•
