Equine Cushing’s Disease Monitoring Voucher
Does your horse have Cushing’s Disease? You may be eligible for a free lab fee voucher! Regular 6-monthly prescription checks with blood tests are vital so that we can spot any early changes which may increase your horse’s risk of laminitis, weight loss, lethargy and other consequences of Cushing’s disease, or PPID. They also allow us to prescribe medication at the correct dose to keep your horse well. We wanted to remind you there is a voucher scheme which can be used to claim a free Cushing’s blood test lab fee once a year. More information can be found at Care About Cushings (https://careaboutcushings.co.uk/what-to-do), or call us on 01582 946248. (Examination, blood sample collection, postage and sample processing fees still apply.)

If you recognise one or more of the signs of Equine Cushing’s disease in your horse, there are three simple steps you need to take to find out if they have the condition, and how to best manage the disease so that they continue to live a happy and healthy life.

Encysted Small Redworm Blood Test

Although we can only wish to hibernate from freezing weather, for small redworms it’s an annual event. As temperatures drop, these pesky parasites bury into the wall of horses intestines, where they hide out until warmer weather comes in Spring. As the worm larvae encyst they damage the lining of the intestine, which can lead to weight loss, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and in severe cases can be fatal. Until recently it has been difficult to diagnose a horse with encysted red worms; while the larvae are hibernating they don’t produce eggs which would show up on a worm count. Now we have access to a blood test which indicates whether a horse has been exposed to the encysted larval stage. We recommend using this blood test as part of your annual targeted worming program, alongside regular faecal egg counts and tapeworm saliva testing. This can help reduce the use of unnecessary worming products, which helps slow wormer resistance, and identify lower risk horses who need treating. For more information call our office on 01582 946248. (Photos from Austin Davis Lab)

We have news!

Tomorrow we welcome back Hannah after her year of maternity leave; it’s going to be really great to have her back!

This coming Friday Adele has been selected to ride at The Senior Home Nations in medium dressage. This is quite a big deal and potentially a once in a lifetime opportunity. As such Friday 22nd September will be emergency and urgent cases only and the RVC have very kindly agreed to cover this day. Rowan will be doing the weekend for us which will be his final weekend before embarking on his own practice set up. I/we hope you understand why Adele has to go and we’ve arranged suitable cover. Please ring the normal phone number and we will sort the rest.

Finally. It’s our first Birthday and we would like to celebrate with you our wonderful clients. One lucky winner will win a Premier Equine, AR Equine embroidered dressage saddle cloth in full size, a demi bottle of Prosecco, a tub of celebrations and horse treats. In total this is worth approx £60. To win you a) must be an existing client and b) be able to collect from Kensworth. Please like, comment and share to enter and the winner will be chosen at random on 30th September 2023. Good luck!!
