🐍 Adders 🐍

With the glorious weather recently, we have seen an expected increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

Fantastic news today when this little kitten was able to be discharged today after being admitted to our hospital on Saturday due to becoming very poorly quite suddenly.

Kittens and puppies can become poorly very quickly so it's really important to ensure they have prompt veterinary assessment at the first sign of anything out of the ordinary.

She's been an absolute trooper and our team all wish her the very best for the future ❤️

It's so lovely to get updates on the patients we've seen. We're really glad to hear this patient is doing well 🦜😊

Meet handsome Leo!

Leo the cockapoo was transferred to us for care following surgery by his primary vets to remove a foreign body (a corn on the cob!) from his small intestine.

Unfortunately he failed to progress as expected with respect to his recovery which led to us performing an ultrasound scan of his abdomen. The ultrasound scan raised suspicion that the small intestinal wound had broken down which is a recognised complication which can occur following gut surgery.

Veterinary surgeon Louise, accompanied by veterinary nurse Kate, took Leo back to surgery. Leo required removal of 40cm of small intestine, as well as his spleen due to the presence of extensive fibrous adhesions throughout his abdomen which had developed as a result of a process known as "peritonitis".

Leo’s abdomen was flushed extensively with fluid and an abdominal drain was placed to allow continued drainage post operatively. A feeding tube was also placed into Leo's oesophagus to provide nutrition to aid his recovery.

This little guy was hospitalised for the next 6 days receiving a combination of intravenous fluids, pain relief, antibiotics and a range of supportive care around the clock to get him back to full fitness.

Thanks to our team of receptionists, veterinary care assistants, nursing staff and veterinary surgeons for all of their dedicated care for Leo day and night and for Leo's owner entrusting us with his care.
