'Flu Vaccinations.

There is currently a Europe-wide shortage of equine 'flu vaccines caused by the unavailability of Proteq 'flu and 'flu/tetanus vaccines. This has meant that we, like all other practices using the Proteq vaccine have recently had to switch to using other brands and supplies of those brands are now running very low. As a result we are having to prioritise vaccine use until supplies return to normal. At the moment it isn't clear when that is likely to be but possibly late October at the earliest.
Nationwide the level of equine influenza is currently at very low levels as a result of higher than normal levels 3 years ago and subsequent increase in vaccine uptake. Horses most at risk from 'flu are young, unvaccinated horses and those moving and mixing with other horses on a regular basis for competition purposes. Older horses that have been fully vaccinated for at least a couple of years and those rarely leaving their home premises are considered low risk.
The British Horseracing Authority and British Equestrian Federation are currently looking into the possibility of relaxing vaccination regulations, in particular the requirement for horses to have received their last 'flu booster within 6 months of competition but as of 23/8/22 no formal decision or announcement has been made. Therefore, horses competing under affiliated rules should still be vaccinated according to the rules. If the situation changes we will aim to keep everybody informed as soon as possible.

The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) issued guidelines yesterday to give guidance for prioritising vaccine use as follows:

Horses competing under affiliated rules should still be vaccinated in accordance with the relevant rules.

Young, unvaccinated horses that are at risk of being exposed to the virus by moving or mixing with other horses that are at risk of exposure to the virus should be vaccinated.

For fully vaccinated horses not competing under affiliated rules there is no requirement for 6 month boosters and yearly booster intervals can be extended from 12 months to 15 months with their subsequent booster being given at 9 months.

With the currently low levels of equine influenza in the UK the above measures should ensure adequate protection against influenza until normal vaccine supplies can be re-instated.

Wishing all our clients a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year - from all at the practice.

About our Practice

We are an ambulatory equine practice based in Sandbach, Cheshire.

All three of our veterinary surgeons have extensive experience and expertise in equine veterinary care. All are keen competitive riders with a wealth of knowledge in sports horse medicine and orthopaedics.

We cover the whole of Cheshire and parts of the surrounding counties. We provide a full portfolio of equine health care, including routine vaccinations, dental care, investigative techniques (Radiography, Ultrasonography, Endoscopy, Gastroscopy, reproductive ultrasonography) all of which are portable and therefore we are able to perform these on your yard. We work closely with surrounding hospitals and are able to refer to the best facility to suit your individual horse's condition.
