A few years ago just 60 Desertas island land snails survived… but we’ve JUST reintroduced 1,300 to the wild 🌍
For 100+ years, they were thought to be extinct… then came a remarkable discovery! Just 60 were found on a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean 🌊
They were flown to Chester where our experts worked to breed them for the first time ever in human care... and now the population has grown into the thousands! 📈
With the snails thriving, more than 1,300 have just been successfully reintroduced to Bugio Island - a protected wildlife haven in Maderia, Portugal.
This has to be the comeback of the century! 🐌
What a WILD year 2024 has been! 🙌 From celebrating new arrivals—both adorable newborns and exciting new species—to achieving huge conservation wins by reintroducing critically endangered species back into the wild 🌍 Oh, and did we mention we were named the UK’s #1 zoo! ❤️ 2025, we’re ready for you 🎉
Maasai Olympics: From hunting lions to hunting medals
FROM HUNTING LIONS, TO HUNTING MEDALS 🏹
Just 20 lions survived in Amboseli, Kenya. But now it's home to more than 200! 🦁
In Maasai culture, young warriors must kill lions as a traditional rite of passage into manhood. But when populations plummeted, our partners Big Life Foundation came up with a game-changing idea… the Maasai Olympics.
Instead of killing lions, warriors compete in several events for medals and prizes that help support their families and communities!
The 2024 Maasai Olympics took place in Kenya this weekend and our team were there to witness the action...

Saving big cats in India 🐅🇮🇳
Big news for BIG cats! 🐅
Imagine coming face to face with a leopard or a tiger. Well that’s a reality for people living in parts of India 🇮🇳
In the past, some would react by shooting, attacking or poisoning them out of pure fear. But thanks to huge conservation efforts by our experts, Wildlife Trust of India and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, big cats that wander into villages are now given safe passage and move on peacefully.
Proof that that people and wildlife can thrive together with a little understanding 🌏

Rare crocodile baby boom! 🐊💚
Watch the INCREDIBLE moment some of the world's rarest crocodiles hatch - and listen to their little chirps! 💚🐊
Two years ago, our team were asked to help with international efforts to save the critically endangered Siamese crocodile from extinction.
Guided by our knowledge and expertise, developed through working closely with crocodile species here at the zoo, we’ve been able to further boost the success rate in breeding centres in Cambodia by more than 500% 🥚💥
More crocs are now being released into Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains by our conservation friends Fauna & Flora - with the goal of adding another 150 to the wild population by 2025! 🌍
What better way to celebrate #ReptileAwarenessDay 🙌
