I couldn’t be more proud of this boy! Reggie meets the criteria for an XL Bully, so he’s been grounded since the legislation was passed to say that he can’t be walked without a muzzle. After several sessions of gentle training to accustom him to accept his muzzle, alongside homebased play and stimulation whilst he couldn’t go out, we were able to head out for our first walk in a couple of weeks. We still have a way to go until he’s completely comfortable, he does look a little unsure in the photo, but the excitement of his walk soon distracted him. Safe to say, this gentle boy is back. 💚🐾💚

Petting dogs we don’t know.

When I was little, I wanted to pet every dog I saw. I loved them. ALL of them. I’d been taught always to ask the owner if the dog is friendly and if I could pet them, but I never thought about whether the dog would welcome my attention.

Nowadays, as a dog walker, and dog mum, I know the signs better, I can see that some dogs love a fuss, but others are obviously uncomfortable. As dog lovers, we should be prepared to greet them as they prefer, and not at all if that is their preference.

So how do we make sure our dog’s preference is known? I recently watched my young cousin ask to ‘say hello’ to a cute dachshund. The owner said yes, but then as he gently reached out to her, it was obvious she wasn’t comfortable with his attention. It’s hard as an owner to say no because we want our dogs to be sociable, and also because we don’t want people to judge us or them.

Since walking other people’s dogs for a living, I’ve found a way of cheerfully putting people off. I smile and briskly tell those who approach ‘I’m sorry, but I’m a dog walker and I’m not insured to let you pet him/her’. People understand and back off. This has made me brave enough to tell people that my girls are nervous around strangers, throwing in the old ‘they’re rescue dogs’ with a knowing smile, and it works.

If you’re a dog owner, ask yourself if your dog likes attention from strangers, and if not, give that a try. And if you’re a dog lover, think twice before offering a fuss to dogs you meet. 😊🐾 💚🐾

Okay, so no judging my choice of words😅 I just wanted to introduce you to our every day feeding drill. Believe it or not, it was only 6 months ago that these pooches seriously lacked impulse control. Any food lying around would be gone, any food that was put down for them would have been eaten before the bowl even made contact with the floor. To many people, especially ones with rescues, this would have been seen as the impossible. Me included🙋🏽‍♀️ But with knowledge, patience and consistency, the hard work has paid off. My 6 year old rescue dogs now have impulse control and will only eat on my command and I’m so ridiculously proud of us! I am a Dog Walker based in Chesterfield with a huge ambition to be a Canine Behaviourist.
