Busy day today with our Dorchester based clients. Always great to see ongoing improvements since our last sessions, with owners teally taking note and getting involved in home based exercises. Also great to meet some new clients and hear their individual journey. I had some very expressive horses today who normally are quite flight/fight led so always rewarding to see them relax and embrace their treatments . As we dinished rhe say the rain clouds were rolling in but the glow from the r**e was dazzling 😎

We’ve met some great new clients and their horses as well as catching up with our regulars. What was has topped it all was having the sun! Oh my goodness what a difference it makes and its been extra special to be able to trest the horses outside with the warmth on their backs☀️☀️🐴 Long may it continue!

Busy old week in the Equionics office and we’ve actually managed to stay dry, with glimpses of spring. Very nearly got wet at Wellington today where I have been working as Testing Technician for British Equestrian Federation, but thankfully i had just completed my last test of the day when the downpour started. Time@is flying by already in 2025 and how on earth is it March next week ! We will be at on Saturday together with discussing all things thermoregulation. Come and say 👋🏻 **eutics

OK, lets talk thermal imaging. With the fantastic reach social media has these days, more and more horse owners are being able to see how and when thermal imaging ( thermography) is used for preventative and diagnostic* purposes. But can anyone carry this out. Well, the answer is yes, BUT that does NOT mean they know what they are doing. Many have attended training courses in person ( fantastic) HOWEVER, sadly sometimes these courses do not teach attendees in accordance with the correct protocols for Veterinary Imaging. Red flags to look for
🚩imaging outside
🚩imaging in sunlight
🚩imaging with no mane/ tail preparation
🚩imaging with clear artefacts present( mud/water)
🚩imaging post rug removal
🚩inferior equipment
🚩giving a diagnosis… ONLY a vet can do this
🚩production of non thermally tuned images
🚩diagnosis and treatment recommendations given directly.

Thermal Imaging (TI) was orginially popular for the mechanical, construction and engineering sector and early adoptees such as the highly skilled Dr Tracy Turner, spent decades researching, developing and continually improving the way in which it could be used in the veterniary world. I myself, have been fortunate enough to develop a protocol now used by the FEI for heat monitoring in competition. I am however frequently alarmed to see posts of people using TI cameras which do not meet the required sensitivity to monitor animals. Operators who image in non controlled environments, outside, where horses manes and tails have not been prepared accordingly.

Thermography can be performed outside for heat monitoring purposes under a strict protocol but NOT diagnosis of ailments, injury etc. This is simply NOT correct.

All this being said, there are a handfully or qualified, experienced and knowledgable thermographers who are well respected across the globe. We consult, collaborate and have an excellent peer to peer relationship and dialogue.

If you are a therapist keen to understand more about thermography or indeed want to become a thermographer, we would be delighted to chat to you also.

In closing when choosing a thermographer ask questions, ask for references, ask for sample reports and get educated yourself before parting with your money

🐎FROSTY MORNINGS - TOP TIP!🐎

🥶Sudden surface transitions, especially in trot, canter or gallop carry an increased risk for injury.

🥶If you have an arena that can be frozen and thawed at the same time, its a good idea to only transition between the areas when riding in walk to reduce the risk of injury. Same when out hacking. Same applies if you are out running yourself!

Totally agree with this! Its not all about treadmills, walkers and fancy gadgets. As therapists we need to be creative and ensure that rehab is deliverable regardless of budgets

You don’t NEED amazing facilities to rehab horses.

Sometimes they are just not available!

Part of the job of an Equine Rehabilitation Therapist is to be creative and work with the facilities the owner has available to them.

There is no point prescribing hill work if there are no hills around the yard. There is no point prescribing elaborate pole work sequences if there are only 3 poles available!

We have to help owners to think creatively about what they have to hand and how they can use it to help rehabilitate their horse.

Take time to understand the facilities that are available to the horse you are working with before you create their rehab plan.

Help owners to use their imagination to create rehabilitation exercises out of what they have available.

The Equine Thoracic sling forms the connection between the forelimbs and the body.

Nestled between the forelimb and the rib cage, the brachial plexus lies protected. The integrity and function of the thoracic sling is essential to the function of the entire body. Restrictions or dysfunction of this area can restrict the nerves of the brachial plexus, restrict range of motion of the forelimbs as well as the hindlimbs, and cause imbalance throughout the body.

A little about us

Equionics was founded by Helen Reynolds, a passionate equestrian of many years, with a desire to assist in the wellbeing of equines across Europe. Having run her own Private Equity firm, Helen decided to sell up and follow her childhood passion for all things equine on a full time basis .Using her knowledge and expertise, Helen set up (and still owns to date) a proven rehabilitation yard. Due to its success, Helen was keen to be able to provide the same level of treatment and service to external clients.

Never one to do things by half, Helen has developed an educational programme to allow future Therapists the opportunity to enter the profession, providing them with not only the educational support but also the practical “ hands on” route as well.

Now operating not only in the UK but also in Europe, Helen and her team provide essential therapy treatments to a range of equines, from competition to retired, shetland to shire.
