What if you learned that your TB or TB-derived breed horse had an inherited skeletal problem that could directly lead to arthritis, instability, stumbles and falls?

About to start an intensive course of sports massage to help Briar feel her best. Marcelle has recently been accepted onto the Excel Talent Squad and she's received some amazing feedback and some great advice for fine tuning Briars physique. Both Briar and myself will be keeping warm under the solarium, so pleased stay tuned to follow briars progress.
Here's some photos of the start of our journey, our main areas of focus will be stretching her back, building up her Gluteals and TFL.

***THE SACROILIAC JOINT***

This joint is made up of the illium (part of the pevlis) and the 5 sacral vertebrae (fused to form the sacrum). This joint relies on the dorsal sacroiliac ligaments, ventral sacroiliac ligaments and the interosseus ligaments to support the joint.

Injuries to the sacroiliac joint can be caused though direct trauma (primary sacroiliac pain) a sprain or fracture, or secondary joint pain through current lameness from a hind leg (often caused from promixmal suspensory ligament pain).

Common signs: bunny-hopping gait, disunited in canter, incorrect canter lead, lack of implusion through the hind limbs.

Diagnosis: ultrasound examination of the joint, nuclear scintigraphy “bone scan” and the exclusion of other hind limb lameness.

Treatment: restoring correct muscle function of the back, abdomen and pelvis (multifidus and gluteal), aqua treadmil, trotting poles to encourage the horse to pick up their hind legs therefore developing the upper limb and pelvis muscles. Steroid medication is key for aiding in pain relief, this medication provides the horse with short-term relief therefore must be supported with strengthening exercises to achieve the long-term benefits.

You know what’s great? When you can put your hands on your horse and make him feel better: rejuvenated when he’s tired, calm when he’s under stress, and comforted when he’s in pain. While there are lots of ways to pay others to help your horse, there are also a number of modalities you can Continued

CAN BODY WORK HELP YOUR HORSE RELAX?

YES!
There is substantial evidence that massage therapy increases relaxation, both physical and mental.

Research has demonstrated that a single massage therapy session consistently reduces heart rate, blood pressure and reported anxiety levels.

Whilst repeated massage therapy sessions have been found to be similarly as effective as psychotherapy at reversing depression and anxiety in human patients!
