❓ Do you have five minutes to help The British Horse Society?

📝 We all know how vital regular hoof care is to our horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. To futureproof this care, The BHS needs your help to assess the availability of qualified farriers in the UK and the Republic of Ireland via this quick survey 🔗 forms.office.com/e/QjLDuMJqk3

🐴 If you’re over 18, they’d love to hear about your routine hoof care and your experiences when accessing farriery and hoof care provider services for the animals in your care.

🤝 Your insight will allow the BHS to work in partnership with other equine welfare charities, and the industry, to make access to the farriery profession easier so that, together, we can futureproof horse care in the UK.

This horse had an abscess that bust out at the coronary band, resulted in a horizontal crack that migrated towards an old vertical crack. The hoof capsule was stabilise with a heart bar shoe, which allowed the affected heel to regrow down. We are now three months on and the new horn is growing well. The weak horn below the crack has been removed and hoof filler mixed with fibre glass has been added to reinforce the new hoof growing down. Will hopefully update in a few shoeings with a nice strong hoof.

It’s unbelievable the amount of support and generosity I’ve received so far. I know so many of us have our own stories of how cancer has affected us and our loved ones. So I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone ❤️🥊

People are still asking to enter raffle so I’ve postponed the draw to next Sunday 12th, as I’m sure everyone can understand, that the more we can raise for Cancer Research the better and I’ll be personally donating the price of a set of shoes on top.

Thanks again David

A Tribar insert from the fitted to a showjumper that has a infection to the soft tissues deep in central cleft, this has caused instability to the hoof capsule. The Tribar allows access to the central cleft for treatment whilst still providing stability to the hoof capsule.

This horse I posted about earlier in the year, had NPA which was causing palmar hoof pain and putting navicular area under strain. I originally shod with bar shoes and graduated pads.
After reviewing xrays with the vet, there was an improvement in palmar angle, so we decided to use a heart bar shoe to share the load and to help develop heel strength. However I wasn't happy with the results and felt a different approach was necessary.
Decided on 3D half mesh pads with DIM and Artimud, this is the 3rd application and I'm please with the results. There is an improvement in heels growth and strength, the HPA is improved.

Winter weight loss??

Please do not panic if your horses start to lose a bit of last years condition over the winter...it is normal. Mother nature prepares horses to drop weight throughout the winter ready for the lush grass in the spring/summer. As long as the weight loss is not drastic or associated with pain (consult your vet) and your horse is getting plenty of forage then weight loss towards the end of the winter is a natural and in some cases a very good thing. As the owner of an overweight horse, you can use this phenomenon to your advantage, to slim your horse down prior to the Spring grass coming through.
Remember, during winter feed is naturally scarce but we humans want to provide our horses with abundance, warm rugs and cosy stable, this reduces the natural ability to lose the weight therefore going into spring already carrying a good coverage of fat...this can result in metabolic issues and obesity. So please allow Mother Nature to her job and slim your horses down. A body score of between 2.5 and 3 is perfectly acceptable for going into Spring.
