Well yesterday was one of those days when you are reminded that learning can be fluid and the absolute certainty with behaviour is that it changes! Jerry has a pretty fixed indication, he is quite intense with it, as he is with most things. At a trial yesterday his 1st search was off lead and his indications were good. The second search which was on lead, they started to fall apart, I had to reset him and ask for the proper indication before I marked him. The 3rd search i decided to use a Keep going signal or bridge which he knows to get better quality. This worked to some extent but on one find he decided shouting at the hide may be a better idea. Onto selection boxes and the 1st indication was brief, in comparison to his usual behaviour. Second find he did a good nose bop and then ran on.
Its times like this during a trial that you have to make good decisions. I definitely wasnt going to mark a poor behaviour and was happy to run out of time if it meant getting it right. I also stayed very neutral, he knows the indication but was unable to offer it to his usual high standard. This is a training need, it is something I need to explain better to him, I need to puzzle that out, not put pressure on him in that moment. It is really important in a trial situation to not change what you mark. I shall now spend some time revisiting the indication. Yesterday may have just been a fluke, just a little slippage in his behaviour that isnt a long term problem. If I look back over the last month had I missed that we were losing the quality slightly? I suspect I havent done enough on line with him. Even if I never know what happened going back to the foundations on his indication will only serve to strengthen his understanding and all those reinforcements will make him want to offer the behaviour more. He is a young dog still and at 12 months there are lots of things going on in his body and brain.
