Our first dressage test 😊 for a while competing seemed like a very distant dream... I was lucky if I would be able to ride her at all... for a long time just being able to sit on her was a massive deal and she has only accepted the canter properly in the last few months. Its been a long and tough 2 and a half years to say the least but moments like today make it all worth it.
Shes never seen dressage boards, flowers or the judges table, she has only been to another venue twice before and she has never ridden away from home with other horses around, so I am incredibly proud that she is learning to cope with overwhelming situations and learning to trust me ❤ a big box ticked today and the start of our next chapter. 🙌

Haven't been down the centre line in 9 years... today I did it (not very well) the pressure is immense, I totally forgot how nerve racking it can be. Enter at A and proceed into panick mode 🙈
But I am super pleased with the boy, we went and did elementary and did still manage to get in the 60s despite me totally ballsing up left canter. Over all I'm super pleased I'm even in a position to take a horse thats totally not built for it into elementary (we do it well at home) 🤣
So here's to my first competition in nearly 10 years. 😳

We went out to play.... First time out this year and only her second time off the yard.
I am beyond proud with how she coped, all I wanted was for her to have a calm good experience out, so to get a bit of decent work was an added bonus... we had a big school with no sides 😳 (we stayed inside the school) horses out in the field... an orange cat 🐈 floating about. A judging box that shes never seen and a whole lot of distractions. A few baby moments, being too overwhelmed to get back on the trailer home so my skin is now detached from my fingers 🙄 but other than that I am totally proud of her today. Thank you Katie for having us at your clinic today and of course a massive thank you to my fabulous friend Carly for being there, not only today but through our whole journey. We couldn't do it without you 😘 oh and I reversed the trailer in a very small car park 🤣

We've been a little quiet lately... but here's a little update of how Thea is coming along. Her canter is starting to take shape and she is starting to learn to keep the consistency in the contact through both reins. Our transitions are both upwards and downwards are staying together a lot more and she is getting stronger each session we have.
I'm so unbelievably proud of this horse, she has overcome so much anxiety and tension in the ridden work, we have produced everything very slowly and she has not been rushed, I am now reaping the benefits of my patience 🧡🤍

Sadly I see this way too often.
Listen to your horses and learn to understand them before you deem them badly behaved. They don't have voices like us so they have to physically communicate. The responsibility is ours to ensure we hear them.

Winning and image should always come second to your horse

Horses are amazingly tolerant, giving creatures.

It unfortunately means they’re often exploited due to the ambitions of the human. After their basic needs are met, you must be very thoughtful in the training of your horse.

Your first duty is to preserve the purity of the paces. What does this mean? Walk has 4 beats, trot has 2, canter has 3, gallop has 4. ALWAYS. If not, something is wrong biomechanically, and your horse is at risk of injury. BTW impure paces can usually be detected in a photograph, even though it is only a “moment in time”, AND this applies to all disciplines.

Strapping a horse’s mouth shut with a crank/flash (or other) noseband very often contributes. The fact is, a horse cannot maintain full range of motion with his hind legs if he can’t move his tongue and jaw. FACT.

For jumping, if the horse bolts off - away from, towards, or after a jump, putting on a bigger bit and a martingale will not fix it. If a horse hesitates or stops, pulling out the whip will NEVER make him more confident.

These are just a few hints that your horse is asking for HELP. Go back. Consolidate the basics. I have a FREE guide to help with this, you can download it now https://www.classicaljumping.com/next-level-freebie

Another wonderful thing about horses is they're retrainable. If you ignore the hints, eventually the horse will either break down, or will SHOUT to get your attention, and you will get hurt.

After all, horses are dangerous. We tell everyone that. But actually they are not. We wouldn’t be able to ride them if they were truly dangerous. You know what’s dangerous? People are.

Ponder this excerpt from Franz Mairinger’s book “Horses are made to be Horses”:

I recall an incident in Sydney when we had a lame horse with a very bad tendon, and the rider wanted to start the horse the next day. We asked Roy Stewart, the veterinary surgeon, and he said, ‘Yes, that’s the trouble. People always think that horses are made for man, but that’s not true. Horses are made to be horses’. I thought about that a lot, and decided that if I should write a book I would call it Horses are made to be Horses.

(Franz Mairinger was the first coach of an Australian Olympic Equestrian Team, his excellent book is out of print, but can occasionally be found second hand - buy it if you see it)

Beauty in burgundy 😍 ready for our evening hack.

The past couple of weeks have consisted of lots of hacking and cantering and I'm so pleased with how she has behaved.
Shes got so much personality and lots of opinions and finally she is starting to understand how to communicate without loosing her mind and getting so overwhelmed... 🧡 and the best part of all is that she is loving it 🤍

Its not often I get to see our progress, but yesterday i got some footage of our lesson.

So pleased with how she is coming along. Back at the canter, now she is stronger and more balanced she is much more relaxed and comfortabl, so more of that to come.

A massive thank you to Sarah Turner Dressage for pushing us right when we needed it and being a huge support ♥️

I have stolen this photo from. Another group, because this is a fantastic visual of the inside leg to outside rein concept.

I know it can be difficult for some riders to take up more outside rein when they feel like they are struggling on the circle.

Picture explanations
B.
Hips turned to the outside, resulting in the weight being taken out of the inside stirrup and the knee and thigh closing to the saddle and creating a block for the shoulder, so only neck bend is possible for the horse. Too much inside rein as a result of not having the horse bent. The weight on the horse now falls onto the inside shoulder, also means the horse can't step under with the inside hind. And the horse and fall out of the outside shoulder.

C.
Riders hips following the line of direction, opening the inside thigh and knee, resulting the outside leg to be able to be slightly behind the girth to offer outside support for the hind quarters. Inside knee open to allow the inside shoulder to be able to travel and lift. Outside rein contact, offers support on the outside shoulder. The inside leg is on and offers an anchor for the horse to bend around, pushing the weight onto the outside shoulder allowing the inside hind to step under. Therefore the inside leg is pushing the horse into the outside rein.

FRENCH GOVERNMENT ASK FOR AN OVERHAUL OF EQUINE WELFARE FOR OLYMPICS 2024

I'm a bit late with this news but wanted to share it in case you'd missed it. The French Parliament have produced a lengthy report asking the organising committee of the Olympic Games for a complete overhaul of the rules regarding equestrian sport (completely bypassing the FEI!). Their aim is to make Paris 2024 the Olympic Games of equine welfare.

The report has 46 recommendations to improve welfare across all disciplines. There is a section on the use of equipment, including banning the use of draw reins, the use of gag bits in the cross country and elevator bits being used together with martingales. They are asking for a review of nosebands (including cranks and grackles) and for noseband tightness to be checked using the ISES taper gauge. They would like a ban on riders using hyperflexion anywhere on the showground, referring to hyperflexion as 'any head and neck position where the nose is behind the vertical'.

The report also recommends a ban on use of the whip more than once per event and more than twice during the warm-up. They want to prohibit an overly constrained posture and authorise riding without spurs in dressage.

Are the recommended changes really enough to improve horse welfare in sport? Will this report change anything? If the recommendations are put in place, will the rules actually be enforced? This is a remarkable step for a country's government to take, but there were so many concerns about horse welfare at the Tokyo Olympics, I think this move was absolutely necessary if the public is to continue supporting equestrian sport.

The report has been translated by the brilliant team at Horses and People (thank you!) and is well worth reading. You can read the report here: https://horsesandpeople.com.au/french-parliament-calls-for-horse-welfare-overhaul-at-paris-2024

I've been able to put a bit more time into Athena these past few weeks and its really starting to show.
She is maturing quite slowing so I'm cautious not to overwork her physically, which is a challenge as her brain is very active.
She is a super quick learner but also very sensitive, currently bum high so we've still got another growth spurt on its way. She struggles to keep the contact through transitions and anything that requires a little bit more thought, so I tried this exercise yesterday to try and help her keep some focus. There were 4 poles (one out of view) 1 in each corner, the poles were far enough apart to give her time to process and find her frame again should she lose it. I also used it to try and lift her left shoulder on the left rein as she really falls into the circle.
I am really pleased with how she responded, a few baby moments, getting a bit overwhelmed a couple of times, but she processed very quickly and moved past it. 🧡👌

Finally back out hacking... First time this year, I'd hoped to do it sooner but we've had a few set backs recently, but today we done it. We face tractors 🚜 with hay trailers and barking dogs jumping at the fence (she doesn't like dogs) and just a few canters on the spot and a small rear. So massive improvement to how I know she can react. 🧡 thanks to Ann and Khiya for babysitting us 😘
