πŸ’« THE CHIN REST πŸ’«
An underrated behaviour if you ask me!
Before I taught this to Clipper he used to sit inches from my face when I was eating πŸ˜… I have never been an 'eat at the table' kind of gal, nor did I want to restrict my dogs access to the room at dinner time. For me, the chin rest was a good compromise to keep some distance between us when I'm eating because it keeps him on the floor instead of on my lap! I also use it to clean his eyes and nose, apply ear drops and of course grooming! Getting some adorable pictures is just an added bonus πŸ₯°

3 month old Bella had her first groom today and did amazing!

By having something fun for her to focus on whilst the dryer was on, the loud noise became the least interesting thing in the room. She also had freedom to move away at any point if it became too much. What a brave girl πŸ₯°πŸ˜

Some might call a herd of cows a "distracting training environment" but not Willow πŸ‚πŸ˜…

We taught her the "leave it" cue indoors before quickly levelling it up outside. This simple technique reinforces that disengaging with something (good or bad) in the environment reaps rewards, and is a great starting place for reactivity training. Well done everyone!

This is a fantastic article with science based evidence on why a harness is often a better alternative to collars when walking your dog πŸ€“πŸΆ

At first glance a dog’s neck may seem muscular and strong; easily capable of having a leash and collar attached for walking. After all, it’s what we’ve used for the past umpteen years and it’s able…

The beautiful Maxi has been coming to gradual grooming appointments for just over 2 years. In total we have had 13 x 30 minute appointments building his confidence up on having different parts of his body groomed. His ears and feet were particularly tricky.

Today was a huge milestone for Maxi as he allowed me to complete a full groom without a care in sight! He has learnt to trust that his efforts will be paid, his concerns listened to and that ultimately it's his choice what gets done. The more he tolerates, the more he gets paid - it's a no brainer πŸ˜…

This wouldn't have been possible if his amazing mam hadn't put in the work between sessions - great teamwork! πŸ₯°β€

This one is a heartbreaker 😭 Nala was recently rehomed and her new parents reached out to me for an emergency appointment. At just 6 months old she had then worst matting I have ever seen.

Her finished look isn't perfect, but atleast she can now feel the air on her skin πŸ₯° So pleased she has found the love she deserves in her new home ❀

I have found a couple of ticks in the last few days - the joys of summer! πŸ˜«β˜€οΈ

Even if your dog gets flea treatments, ticks can still stay attached for 24 hours before dying and dropping off. If you find one don't panic! Grab some tweezers, gently grasp its body, twist a few times and pull it free.

I'll do it free for regular customers because I weirdly kind of love it πŸ˜…

I went for a walk today and saw a very cute, young shih tzu on an extendable lead getting lots of attention. The little dog went to greet a Shiba Inu which seemed just as keen to say hello. Whilst the owners stood still, the dogs got entagled in the extendable lead and the Shiba Inu panicked and wanted space.

Fortunately the owners were able to hold both dogs (with them being quite small) whilst they became untangled, but this awkward encounter could have ended a lot worse.

When dogs greet one another they move in a circular motion to sniff - whereas us humans like to stand facing one another. If you follow your dog as they move around the other you can prevent any lead issues and provide your pup a safe space to retreat into.

Just because two dogs seem keen to greet one another, they can become uncomfortable just as quickly. Dogs have different personalities and play styles, not to mention some dogs may be unwell, in pain or might just want to cut the interaction short and continue on with their walk.

Leads restrict a dogs movement and how much space they have, creating a similar feeling to being cornered, so be sure to keep an eye on their body language and call them away if you think they need a break (especially for young pups that tend to be a bit too exciteable).

Safety before socialisation! 🐾

About Clipper & Blades...

My name is Bren - I am a self-employed dog groomer and licenced home boarder based in Choppington, Northumberland.

I am qualified in Animal Management, Canine Behaviour and Communication as well as being a qualified dog groomer. I have a custom built, fully functional dog salon in my home where I groom from on Sundays and Mondays. Grooming from home allows me to never be far from the dogs I board and I am also able to offer them grooming at a discounted rate!

Boarding is offered at Β£20 per day, per dog. Bedding and toys can be provided - you just need to bring the food! I have an English Bulldog called Clipper who is happy to play with energetic dogs or nap alongside older pooches. An introduction of the dogs is required before the boarding date to test compatibility. The only takes an hour and you will have a chance to ask any questions and view our facilities.
