If you want to have a great relationship with your dog and give them the best possible life, here are a few easy, free things you can start doing today:

1) Learn what 'calming signals' are - it just takes a quick google. They can help you recognise when your dog may be communicating stress so you can make the scary thing stop / go away or reassure them that they're ok.

2) Give your dog a job! Whilst simply existing and having our bills paid might seem appealing to us humans, dogs need mental stimulation to be happy, healthy and content. Challenge them to find a hidden toy, work out how to get the treats from a small cardboard box, fetch the post, retrieve your slippers. Many "problem" behaviours stem from boredom or frustration, but by giving dogs an outlet for the behaviour they feel inclined to do we are allowing that urge to be expressed in a more appropriate fashion (don't chase the cats, chase this flirt pole instead).

3) LOWER your expectations. Your dog is an original, a one of a kind, a masterpiece, the GOAT at being themselves. Whilst we can help our dogs learn new behaviours and reduce their stress, we cannot give them a personality makeover, and nor would we want to. By accepting our dogs for who they are, what they might achieve and what they may never be able to, you are taking a whole load of weight off your shoulders. They are only with us for a short time so let's accept and adapt!

My dog Clipper was 4 years old before I started training him for walks. That's 4 years of pulling being reinforced by me.

For 3 of those years I also had a buggy, which just added to the stress.

Whilst teaching them young is better, it's also never too late to start. Walking should be safe and enjoyable for you and your dog!

Like many dogs, Clipper is scared of the hoover. I switched it on and he got startled, and being a puppy with little life experience he found it super distressing.

I now shout "HOOVER" before I stand up to get it. Why? It lets him predict what is about to change in the environment, it gives him time to move into a different room without panicking, and it maintains the trust he has in me to keep him safe.

We can all do small things everyday to help make our dogs lives a little less stressful πŸ₯°

Here are just some of the perks of having a dog trainer on your team...

➑️ You can nerd out with us about your dog, we want to hear about EVERY achievement no matter how small πŸŽ‰
➑️ We spend hours reading studies on canine behaviour for FuN πŸ€“ Want to know about how dogs became domesticated? The Silver Fox experiment? The benefits of early neurological stimulation? No?? Well, the offers there... πŸ˜…
➑️ We GET how hard it is to have a dog. The guilt of leaving them, the embarrassment when they don't listen, the struggle of wanting to smush their little sleeping faces but also not wanting them to wake up because you need a break πŸ€ͺ We are a shoulder to cry on when things get tough!
➑️ Want to ask our thoughts on a brand of food? Style of harness? How to help them through bonfire night? Just text us! We have loads of insider knowledge and a network of people within our industry so if we don't know the answer, we'll easily find out!
➑️ You call us out when you need us. Your dog's behaviour will naturally change as they age, but things like moving house or having a baby can impact them. We'll be there for you and your dog whether thats once a week or once in a blue moon.
➑️ We aren't here to judge, we are here to help! Let's work out what we can achieve together to make life with your dog the best it can be πŸ₯°

So THIS is how he really feels about me? πŸ₯²

Here's a short video explaining how dogs learn.

It's important to remember that behaviour is often a symptom of emotion. Barking can be a symptom of fear, jumping up a symptom of excitement etc.

Whilst we can easily teach a dog a new behaviour to offer in place of an old one, we also need to give them the tools to have better emotional regulation.

🍁 You might be tempted to grow your dog's coat out during the colder months to "keep them warm", but here are a few things to keep in mind...

🟠 Longer / curly coats require MORE bathing and brushing when exposed to wet weather in order to combat tats.

🟠 It is the water penetrating through the coat down to the skin that makes your dog feel cold, and if they have more hair it will take longer to dry, therefore they are colder for longer.

🟠 The less hair around your dog's paws / between their pads the less muddy water they'll trail through the house. Their pads can also get irritated with dry mud - I've found plenty of stones getting stuck in there too! Paw maintenance is THE priority in winter.

If in doubt just drop me a message!

About Clipper & Blades...

My name is Bren - I am a self-employed dog groomer and licenced home boarder based in Choppington, Northumberland.

I am qualified in Animal Management, Canine Behaviour and Communication as well as being a qualified dog groomer. I have a custom built, fully functional dog salon in my home where I groom from on Sundays and Mondays. Grooming from home allows me to never be far from the dogs I board and I am also able to offer them grooming at a discounted rate!

Boarding is offered at Β£20 per day, per dog. Bedding and toys can be provided - you just need to bring the food! I have an English Bulldog called Clipper who is happy to play with energetic dogs or nap alongside older pooches. An introduction of the dogs is required before the boarding date to test compatibility. The only takes an hour and you will have a chance to ask any questions and view our facilities.
