My dog Clipper was 4 years old before I started training him for walks. That's 4 years of pulling being reinforced by me.
For 3 of those years I also had a buggy, which just added to the stress.
Whilst teaching them young is better, it's also never too late to start. Walking should be safe and enjoyable for you and your dog!
So THIS is how he really feels about me? π₯²
The Four Quadrants explained
Here's a short video explaining how dogs learn.
It's important to remember that behaviour is often a symptom of emotion. Barking can be a symptom of fear, jumping up a symptom of excitement etc.
Whilst we can easily teach a dog a new behaviour to offer in place of an old one, we also need to give them the tools to have better emotional regulation.
Strengthening the "play dead" cue
π€£
3 month old Bella had her first groom today and did amazing!
By having something fun for her to focus on whilst the dryer was on, the loud noise became the least interesting thing in the room. She also had freedom to move away at any point if it became too much. What a brave girl π₯°π
Some might call a herd of cows a "distracting training environment" but not Willow ππ
We taught her the "leave it" cue indoors before quickly levelling it up outside. This simple technique reinforces that disengaging with something (good or bad) in the environment reaps rewards, and is a great starting place for reactivity training. Well done everyone!
Dog hair? Don't care π€ͺ
I have found a couple of ticks in the last few days - the joys of summer! π«βοΈ
Even if your dog gets flea treatments, ticks can still stay attached for 24 hours before dying and dropping off. If you find one don't panic! Grab some tweezers, gently grasp its body, twist a few times and pull it free.
I'll do it free for regular customers because I weirdly kind of love it π
Here's 5 things for puppy owners to focus on during those crucial first few weeks in their new homes πΆ
