I was reading an article by Dr Conor Brady recently, and it inspired me to pull together some key facts he shared, especially around the fear of bacteria in raw dog food, a fear that’s usually pushed by your VETS

“But what about Salmonella and E. coli in raw food?”
It’s a question we get asked all the time. So let’s break it down, plain and simple.

✅ Yes, raw meat can carry bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli. But the idea that it always does or that it’s more dangerous than dry food just doesn’t match the facts.
When you’re feeding high-quality, responsibly sourced meat from reputable suppliers and storing it correctly, the risk is minimal. It’s no different to handling raw meat in your own kitchen — hygiene and common sense go a long way.

📉 Between 2020 and 2023, over 99% of all pet food recalls in the US (by weight) were for dry food even though it only made up around 59% of the market.
That’s a massive gap. Raw food is recalled far less.

🐾 And here’s something few talk about: studies show dry-fed dogs have more E. coli around their rear ends than raw-fed dogs. Strange that never gets mentioned, isn’t it?

💩 As for Campylobacter? All dogs carry it. It’s a normal part of their gut bacteria.
A 2020 study by Runesvärd et al. found it in 12 out of 25 raw-fed dogs, but also in 4 out of 25 dry-fed dogs.
You simply get more Campylo the more meat you feed. It’s not a fault, it’s nature.

✨ What’s often left out of the conversation?
Raw-fed dogs are usually healthier.
✔ Less inflammation
✔ Fewer skin, ear and gut issues
✔ Fewer vet visits
✔ Better digestion

So is it really a problem if their gut microbiome looks a bit different
Or is that just what a healthy, meat-eating dog is meant to look like inside?
