Feeding straw can be very beneficial particularly for horses and ponies that are naturally good doers. Recent studies have shown that using straw as part of your horse's ration - up to 50% - does not increase the risk of gastric ulcers and provides a valuable source of low calorie fibre.

Although straw has very little buffering capability feeding it is still beneficial for gastric health. Straw increases chew time and therefore greater saliva production. This is important as saliva contains bicarbonate which naturally helps buffer acidity in the horse's digestive tract. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘄𝘀 = 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗮 = 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵!

Our research has shown that horse owners of good doers are increasingly worried about feeding a sufficient amount of fibre to promote gut health, without resulting in weight gain. Firstly, if you suspect your horse has gastric ulcers, you should contact your vet for a diagnosis and treatment. 🏥

A ✨𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱-𝗱𝗼𝗲𝗿✨ is a horse or pony who hold their weight well (or currently overweight) and is in moderate - hard work (ridden 4 days a week or more).

It’s tempting to not give the good-doer any hard feed because you don’t want them getting too many calories but, if you do this, they will miss out on quality protein, vitamins and minerals 😞; which are even more important for the working horse or pony.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. ✅
It’s fed by the mug-full (250g per mug) so you can add Light Chaff or Speedi-Beet to bulk up the feed and slow their eating time down – again, without adding way too many calories. This will also make them feel fuller for longer! 👍
