🐾 Foster carer’s wanted 🐾

We are looking for clients registered with ourselves that would be able to offer temporary foster homes for stray animals. This could include cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.

We do get quite a few stray animals that we are unable to reunite with their owners due to no owners coming forward or no microchips.

If you think you would be able to offer foster homes for stray animals then please send us a message via our Facebook messenger page to include which animals you can help, your contact number and any animals you currently have. We can then add your information to a list for any future assistance 🐾

Say hello to Dobby!

Dobby came in to meet the team and to be weighed for his flea and worm treatment!

He was such a good boy! He had some treats and sat on the table for cuddles too!

It’s great to introduce your new pets to the vets especially at a young age, this helps to build a good relationship and helps to show them that it’s not always a scary place to be!

This is the beautiful Vanilla 🐾

Vanilla came to see us this week for a spey procedure. She brought along her favourite teddy Neil to keep her company ❤️

Rabbits can breed at a very young age so neutering can prevent unwanted pregnancies and stops her from having multiple litters in a short space of time.

Rabbits like most small furries are unfortunately at a high risk during anaesthetic. Specific medication protocols and constant monitoring is provided throughout her stay.

Vanillas owners brought with her all her favourite snacks and food. Did you know rabbits shouldn’t be starved before an operation?

A rabbits diet should be made up of around 90% of good quality hay, dark leafy greens and vegetables and a very small portion of pellets

Some good advice from The Kennel Club.

Spring poses risks to dogs, including: bites from ticks and adders, as well as poisons in the form of flowers, w**d killers or slug bait.

We hope you are all enjoying the bank holiday and having lots of Easter fun..

You may remember Oscar from a previous post!

Look how much he’s grown in 4 weeks!

He came in for his Kennel cough vaccine today!
He decided the best place would be to lie on the table and eat biscuits!

Kennel cough can be caught anywhere despite its name! Vaccinating your dogs does not stop them getting kennel cough but reduces the symptoms they have and therefore reduces the chance of them needing medications to treat the symptoms.

Oscar is also a member of our VIP plan so he had the kennel cough vaccine covered under the plan! We also look forward to seeing him in 4 weeks for his flea and worm check up with his VIP plan!

Dog walkers and animal lovers please read.

Sheep and lamb worrying is a highly prevalent and concerning topic for veterinary professionals and the general public.

Here at Hillcrest Animal Hospital we aim to support both dog walkers and local farmers by raising awareness about sheep worrying.

Lambing season usually takes place between December and the end of April, but it is important to be aware of livestock all year round. Livestock attacks are on the rise, according to claims data, injuries cost farmers up to £1.1 million – up 35 per cent on the previous year.

During lambing season, sheep are at high risk of losing their lambs due to stress. A dog doesn’t have to bite a sheep to kill it; many sheep will die two or three days after the incident. If they are pregnant, they are likely to abort their lambs due to stress. Dogs that are left ‘playing’ or teasing sheep, either on an extendable lead or through a fence, can also lead to abortions.

Legally farmers have the right to shoot any dog that is seen attacking, chasing or worrying livestock on their land. Dog owners can also be sued for sheep worrying. To avoid fines and the risk of losing your dog please be mindful on your next dog walk and keep your dog under control and on a short-lead when going through a farmer’s field.

Please remember that even a well-trained dog is not predictable and it is a natural instinct to chase sheep, it is the owner’s responsibility to keep their dog on a lead no matter how good the dogs recall is. If you have any concerns regarding livestock worrying and letting your dog off-lead, please contact the surgery and talk to one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses.

🐾Meet Minnie🐾

Minnie came in a few weeks ago for lameness. After a thorough exam, everything pointed to arthritis. First step - trial non steroidal anti inflammatory medication.

Weeks later Minnie was showing little improvement. So the next step was to sedate Minnie and take some X-rays. X-rays showed that Minnie had multiple issues. Very arthritic joints and bone spurs present on her elbows. This would be the reason for her was lameness and now we can start treatment to keep Minnie comfortable and pain free.

Some symptoms of feline arthritis are as follows
- Reduce mobility - walking stiffly
- Lameness in one or multiple limbs
- Not grooming
- Reluctant to go up and down stairs
- Reluctant to jump up or down
- Reluctant to be touched over areas of pain

Meet Domino 🐾

He came to see us for a castrate this week and wow what a character he was!

Castrating cats is important to reduce the risk of unwanted pregnancies and stray cats.

Domino was such a cheeky chap! You wouldn’t have know he had just had surgery! His favourite game was playing hide and seek underneath his bed! He also loved his tummy tickles ❤️
