We want to talk about muzzle training.
The main use for a dog muzzle is to prevent dog bites, although you may think that your dog would never bite, any dog can bite.
Dogs who are injured and in pain are more likely to bite — even biting an owner who may swear, "But they'd never bite me!"
Being able to put a muzzle on your dog in case of an accident or injury can help them stay calm and prevent injuries to yourself or the veterinary staff during treatment.
Start training your dog to wear a muzzle as early as possible! This way, if you ever need to use it, your dog will already be happy to wear it and it's not an additional cause of stress or discomfort when in an already stressful situation.
Muzzle training dogs is simple, it just takes some time and patience and plenty of treats!
1. Let them sniff the muzzle. Give a treat. Repeat a few times.
2. Touch the nose with the muzzle. Treat. Repeat until they indicate that the muzzle looks interesting in a good way.
3. Hold the muzzle with one hand and a treat with the other hand, so they need to put their nose inside the muzzle to get the treat. Repeat until this step is no big deal.
4. Gently slip the muzzle onto the nose and give a treat. Remove the muzzle immediately. Repeat a few times.
5. Put on the muzzle and fasten the buckle. Treat. Remove immediately. Repeat a few times.
6. Put on the muzzle, fasten it, and count slowly to five. Treat. Remove the muzzle.
7. Each time you put on the muzzle, gradually increase the time the muzzle is on. Continue with treats when muzzle is taken off.
Below is a video of staff pet Wallace being muzzle trained so that when he comes in for neutering or any other procedures in the future he is not stressed by us placing a muzzle.
🦷🦷Following on from our previous post about Pet Dental Health Month we have staff pet Indie showing just how fun tooth brushing can be - just look at those pearly whites😍⭐
🐾Manual brushing is the most effective way to keep on top of your pets dental health! Not all pets will enjoy having their teeth brushed so here are some tips to get them used to it from an early age!🐾
🦷Wait until your pet is nice and calm before trying any tooth brushing - trying when they are full of energy can make it a lot more difficult!
🦷Use a pet tooth brush or soft bristled child's toothbrush to be gentle on your pets gums.
🦷Use toothpaste formulated for pets only! (These tend to be flavoured making it a little easier)
🦷Start slowly, introduce your pet to having their mouth handled, lift up the top lip/bottom lip without using a brush, work up to just touching the teeth with the brush, when your pet comfortably tolerates the toothbrush it time to start brushing - introduce the toothpaste at this stage.
🦷Take it slowly, make it a positive experience by giving your pet plenty or praise and rewards! ⭐
⚠Once plaque has built up, no amount of manual brushing will remove it! ❌If your pet has visible plaque build-up on their teeth it may be time to book a dental check with a view to doing a dental procedure💙⭐
🧐Can anyone guess what this is?🤓
Those of our clients on Moxiclear, Bravecto, Nexguard and Stronghold are covered against this common parasite!☺️
It's a TICK HEAD
🤩It's the head of a tick!!!!!
☺️Using a tick twister is the most effective way to remove a tick, with both body and head included. 😁
😒Using tweezers can cause the head of the tick to break off and remain under your pets skin, leaving your pet more susceptible to tick-borne diseases or infection.😞
If you are ever unsure, please visit the practice for a free nursing check.😄
☺️For those food orientated cats, have you tried a licki mat yet?🐅
😋Again they can be frozen to increase duration and make a great aid when grooming. To keep your kitty distracted while you slowly introduce a daily grooming regime, this lickimat will act as an extra pair of hands to keep kitty still. 😛
