Hello everyone,

This is Sassy, she was mum's beloved fur baby. Sadly, my mum passed away recently so we are looking to find Sassy an amazing family to give her a new home full of love and play.

As it was just her and my mum I think she would be best suited to an adult only home as she is used to a quiet home environment. Sassy is around 6 years old. She is sweet natured and good with other dogs. She is also house trained.

I would of taken her myself in a heart beat but I'm currently looking after two dogs long term myself and unfortunately do not have the room.

Bailey.

Breed: Swiss Mountain dog.

What can I say about Bailey? He is just an all-round lovely boy. When I first met Bailey nearly a year ago, he would happily wander off when he was walked off the lead. Constantly on the lookout for a rabbit to chase. When the walk was finished, I would recall him back to me, but he would often take a while to come as he preferred to continue doing whatever he was doing.

Nearly a year on, we have built quite a special bond. I no longer have to recall him. He has to know where I am at all times. He runs back to check where I am, almost panicking if I am not in his sight. If I stop walking, he comes to my side and waits until I move again.

Bailey's favourite snack at the end of a walk is sausages. I forgot them once, and since then when I pick him up after excitedly saying hello he checks that I have his sausages. As with all my doggy customers, Bailey is a joy to walk, often making me smile or giggle.

Likes: sausages, chasing rabbits, digging for moles.

Dislikes: when you forget sausages, eye contact with horses 😆

To celebrate Trixie's Pet Services 1st birthday, featuring some of our dog customers would be nice. I have come to know so many beautiful dogs and their pet guardians. Each of them has their own personality.

First up, we have Peg.

Breed: Collie

Peg is a sweet girl who gives the best hugs and face washes once she gets to know you. She is always up for an adventure. She is as you would expect of a collie-type breed, highly intelligent. When happy, she bounces through her walks, often identifying as a Gazelle. She has bags of energy when out on sniffari, and often takes a regal stance when checking out the landscape.

Walks with Peg are always fun. She is always excited when I arrive. Her mum and dad think that it is probably because I am her ride to wherever we are going. I think, secretly, I am her favourite human 😂

Likes: long walks/sniffari's, car rides (to long walks, sniffari's), large logs, jumping, running.

Dislikes: Traffic.

So today I went down. I went down hard on a patch of ice. I'm used to my share of injuries, it's pretty much an everyday occurrence. It just kind of goes with the job, but this was different. This was hard.
As I layed there for a bit with the wind knocked out of me, assessing my potential injuries in my head (like any trauma nurse would do🤔), unable to quite bring myself to stand up, I looked up, and from across the snowy pasture this sweet boy came running. Normally, he's cautious as he navigates his way through the snow, but when he saw me go down, he bolted in my direction. He stood over me, assessing my injuries, giving me nudges and sweet little licks on my ear. As I finally stood up, he stood close so I could lean on him, as we made our way back to the barn.
This is love. This is sentience. He was gentle, he was patient, he was kind. He was genuinely concerned about me.
This is an animal that so many people blindly, ignorantly, selfishly cause imaginable suffering to every single day without a thought. For a meal they will quickly forget about. A life of suffering, a death so traumatic, because people refuse to change their habits.
Please see them as someone.
Please make it make sense. Please stop contributing to their unnecessary suffering.

Sadly, I see this a lot locally. Recently, I have seen a few people yanking at their dogs to move them or stop them from pulling on their lead. Walks are meant to be enjoyable for both parties. Training dogs using positive methods works. You need to spend time training your dog every day, and if you are struggling, consider investing in a good dog trainer.

🐕 Four in five (82%) ‘pandemic puppy’ owners have reported using aversive training methods in attempts to address their dog’s problem behaviours, according to a new study by the RVC.

However, this rise in negative reinforcement/positive punishment (e.g., owners shouting at their dog or using training equipment that is unpleasant for dogs, rather than using reward-based methods such as praise and treats) not only negatively impacts animal welfare, but is often poorly effective, and in some cases, can even result in new problem behaviours in dogs due to the fear and anxiety it can cause.

Wee man/little man syndrome, also referred to as small dog syndrome.

Firstly, it's not a syndrome, it's not a fault in the dog, the dog is responding to the environment they live in.

We often use this term when referencing the behaviour of short men in relation to the world. Those men who are angry, aggressive, have a chip on their shoulder. I know plenty of men who are not tall who don't show these behaviours, so it's clearly something else.

There are a number of factors which contribute to us describing small dogs showing angry behaviours.

1. Everything is bigger than them. Relative size is important. A westie is around half as small as a small labrador in weight. Westies are small but can be 4 times the size of the smallest yorkies or chihuahuas. That same labrador is 8 times bigger than the little dog. These little dogs may never, or rarely, interact with a dog smaller than them. Learning how to navigate the world where almost everything is bigger and stronger than you must be really difficult.

2. Because of their small size, they are easy to move around. Next time you are out at the park, watch people with small dogs on lead. Watch how some of them are yanked and pulled around. You don't need to be strong to push and pull around a small dog. They get picked up without asking, moved on etc and unless we actively and consciously think about what we are doing with them, this is their life. And it's b*llsh*t and unfair. Most people don't have the strength to do that as soon as the dog weighs more than 20 kilos (44lbs) or so.

3. They don't get listened to. As in point 2, we physically move them without consent, considerably more than big dogs. A Rottweiler doesn't want to move off the couch, good luck trying to physically move him, so we have to find other ways. A big dog growls, more people will listen. More dogs will listen to, because the threat and potential for damage is greater. If you've been around dogs a while, have you ever heard a small dog being laughed at for growling? Growling is communication, we need to listen regardless of the size. Biting causes less damage than in bigger dogs so its brushed off.

We forced these dogs to escalate because we don't listen to them because we don't need to. These issues occur in bigger dogs but we generally listen to them more because the risk of damage is higher.

Due to these points and others, we label these dogs. They don't have small dog/wee man syndrome. They are not "yappy" or "ankle biters."

They are equal in their dogness to any other dog and deserve to be treated with as much respect and dignity as all other dogs. They are real dogs, no less than any big dog.

Let's start treating them that way.
