💡We are excited to offer a part time animal care assistant role for our exotic and aquatic pets. The role will cover 15-20 hours spread over Monday - Friday during school hours.

Today we were incredibly lucky to welcome a critically endangered Fijian Iguana to the world 🌍

This rare animal hatched only a matter of hours ago, and we're obsessed already! 💚

The Fijian Iguana (Brachylophus Vitiensis) is a critically endangered species of Iguana native to some of the dry forests on the northwestern islands of Fiji 🌴

The biggest threat the creature faces is loss of habitat caused by fires, agricultural development and competition from feral goats. The goats were introduced to the area in the 70's and severely depleted the vegetation from grazing. After the discovery of the Fijian Iguana, all but a few goats were removed and the island was declare a sanctuary 🐐

We're so thrilled we got to witness the hatching of such a rare animal in the first week of 2022 🤞🏼

Catfish are an extremely diverse group of ray-finned fish and get their name from the prominent barbells on their face, which resemble a cat's whiskers 🐱

Though they aren't the most exciting fish to look at, they are an incredibly hardy breed of fish - they're able to thrive in temperatures as low as nearly freezing up to nearly 100 degrees fahrenheit 🥵

Catfish can live in a variety of conditions, with species that prefer saltwater, freshwater and brackish water (water with a level of salinity between freshwater and saltwater). Some catfish prefer stagnant water, whilst others prefer rivers and streams with fast-moving currents 🌊

Wild catfish have very diverse feeding behaviours, Some scavenge for food and others prefer to swallow large fish and other prey whole. Aquarium catfish can feed off algae and other decaying organic material that settles to the aquarium floor, but they do need additional food to live and should be fed the same way as other fish in the aquarium 🦐

Did you know...

Blue Whales are the largest animal ever known to have lived on the planet, including all dinosaurs 😲 The largest of the Blue Whales can measure at over 100ft in length and weigh more than 180 tons!

So, it makes sense that the Blue Whale has a massive heart to match its massive body. Their hearts are roughly 5 feet long and weigh 400 pounds - that's about the size of a golf kart 🐋

The arteries inside a Blue Whales heart are so large that a full-size human could swim through them... gross! Swipe 👉🏼 to see scientists from the New Bedford Whaling Museum in Massachusetts stood next to their Blue Whale heart exhibit ❤

What's the most beautiful fish you've ever seen?

We think the Calico Fantail Goldfish is up there. Although goldfish are a very common breed, the colouration of Calico Goldfish is a random mixture of speckled orange, black and sliver, making them particularly intriguing and unique 🐟

The 'Fantail' part of the name refers to the large, translucent flowing fins and tails that make the Calico Fantail so distinctive. Similar to the body, the fins and tail can be found in an array of beautiful speckled patterns and give the fish an undeniable grace in every home aquarium 🌊

Did you know...

In 2014, researchers from Brazil, Mexico and the US got together to study 12 leatherback sea turtle nests in Oaxaca, Mexico. They monitored the nests for any signs of noise and immediately began detecting sounds - more than 300 different noises in total 😲

The sounds were split into four categories, one of which they called "complex hybrid tones". This sound was only recorded in nests that contained just eggs (rather than eggs and hatchlings) and researchers believe that the eggs were emitting the sounds to coordinate their hatching 🐢
