🐰🐹❄️ Winter care for your small furry friends

While we're all wrapped up warm indoors, let's not forget our smaller companions who can be particularly vulnerable to the cold!

Here's how to keep rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and other small pets comfortable this winter.

For Outdoor Hutches -

🐰 Move hutches to a sheltered spot away from wind and rain
🐰 Add extra bedding - hay is perfect for warmth and snuggling
🐰 Cover hutches with blankets or tarpaulin overnight (but ensure ventilation!)
🐰 Check water bottles twice daily - they can freeze quickly
🐰 Consider bringing outdoor pets inside during extreme cold snaps

For Indoor Pets -

🐹 Keep cages away from draughty windows and doors
🐹 Maintain a consistent room temperature - small pets are sensitive to fluctuations
🐹 Ensure they have plenty of nesting material to burrow into
🐹 Continue providing fresh vegetables - hydration is just as important in winter!

Watch for Warning Signs:

❗Lethargy or reduced appetite
❗Huddling or shivering
❗Cold ears or paws
❗Respiratory issues (runny nose, sneezing)

Winter can put extra strain on small animals, especially elderly pets or those with existing health conditions.

If you're worried about your pet's wellbeing or would like advice on winter care, book a check-up with us.

Keep those furry friends snug as a bug! 🧡

🐾 ❄️ Top tips for winter walks! 🐶

With temperatures dropping and frosty mornings becoming the norm, it's important to keep our four-legged friends safe during their daily walks. Here are our top tips for winter walking.

Before You Go -

🐾 Check paw pads for cracks or soreness - the cold can be tough on sensitive feet

🐾 Consider a dog coat for short-haired, senior, or small breeds who feel the cold more

🐾 Trim excess fur between paw pads to prevent ice ball build-up

During Your Walk:

🐾 Keep walks shorter in very cold weather; your dog will tell you when they've had enough!

🐾 Avoid frozen ponds and lakes, ice can be unpredictable

🐾 Stay visible, reflective gear is essential during those dark winter evenings

🐾 Watch for signs of discomfort: whining, slowing down, or lifting paws repeatedly

After Your Walk:

🐾 Wipe or rinse paws to remove salt, grit, and antifreeze residue (which is toxic!)

🐾 Dry your dog thoroughly, especially their belly and between their toes

🐾 Check for any cuts or irritation on paw pads

If your dog seems stiff after walks or you're concerned about how they're coping with the cold weather, why not book a check-up at your local branch? We're here to help keep your pets happy and healthy all winter long 👏🐕

Stay warm out there! 💙

🐾 Is your cat aged 7 or over? Our new senior cat clinics start soon! 🐈

As our feline friends get older, their health needs change, but the signs can be subtle and easily missed.

That’s why we’re excited to be introducing Senior Cat Clinics at our Workington branch, run by our experienced RVN Helen Copping. These dedicated 30-minute consultations are designed to support mature cats (7+) and senior cats (11+) with personalised care, gentle handling, and expert advice.

During the clinic, Helen can:
✅ Take blood samples to monitor liver, kidney, or thyroid function
✅ Check your cat’s blood pressure
✅ Clip nails and help with grooming (including dematts)
✅ Assess weight and mobility
✅ Offer preventative dental care tips and more

If your cat is being monitored for an ongoing health condition, your vet may recommend a clinic appointment with Helen as a helpful check-in between consultations.

🐱 These clinics are perfect for early detection of age-related health issues, giving your cat the best chance of staying happy and healthy in their golden years.

📅 Appointments will be available on Wednesday afternoons at our Workington practice.

💬 Please speak to your vet or give us a call to learn more or find out if our Senior Cat Clinic is right for your pet.

Is your dog trying to tell you they’re stressed? 🐕‍🦺

Some dogs don’t bark or growl when they’re uncomfortable; instead, they show more subtle signs of stress. At Millcroft Vets, our Confidence Clinics are designed to help you understand your dog’s behaviour and build their confidence in a calm, supported setting.

🐾 Common signs of stress include:

- Panting or shaking when not hot or tired

- Tucked tail or stiff body posture

- "Whale eye" (when they show the whites of their eyes)

- Hiding or avoiding contact

- Excessive licking, pacing, or whining

- Refusing food or suddenly becoming destructive

- Repetitive behaviours like licking their paws or barking at nothing

These behaviours can be caused by a range of triggers, from vet visits and loud noises to everyday interactions that make your dog feel overwhelmed.

💜 Our Confidence Clinics are run by our experienced nursing team and focus on:

- Reading canine body language

- Reducing fear around handling and vet visits

- Positive reinforcement and trust-building

- Helping you respond calmly and confidently when stress signs appear

📞 If you think your dog might benefit from a confidence boost, give us a call to book your space or to speak with one of our nurses for advice 💙

Pet of the Moment - Tilly 🐾 🩷

This is Tilly; Tilly recently qualified from Confidence Clinics led by Kayley, one of our nurses.

Tilly started these clinics because of how upset she would get at vet appointments, barking and hiding behind her owner. The owner was hoping to have Tilly neutered, but we felt it best to tackle her stress beforehand.

Over the course of around 12 months Kayley and Tilly’s owner worked together slowly, starting with weekly appointments and reducing to monthly appointments when she grew in confidence.

During these clinics Kayley paid close attention to Tilly’s body language, identifying her stress triggers. Kayley and Tilly’s owner both noticed how upset she became when she saw the stethoscope, so they worked slowly to encourage Tilly to sniff around the stethoscope and take treats from it.

Kayley carried out simulations of a “check-up“ appointment that the vet would carry out at the start of a consult, listening to Tilly's heart and checking her eyes, ears, and teeth. They took time to build up Tilly’s confidence and make changes where needed.

Towards the end of her sessions Tilly's barking had significantly reduced. She would happily sit while Kayley carried out a check using the stethoscope she’d once been very scared of and the owner was overall very pleased with the difference she had made.

Once Tilly’s confidence in the practice had improved her owner booked her in to be neutered and since then she has continued to be a very happy and confident girl in our practice! Well done Tilly 👏🏻🐶

How do you make your pets happy AND healthy?? 🤔

Enrichment, of course! 🐶🐱

Today is World Animal Enrichment Day (there really is a day for everything!), and there's no better occasion to remind our lovely pet owners of all the wonderful ways you can keep your beloved pet engaged.

But why enrich? Engaging in a combination of activities helps prevent boredom and promotes overall well-being by tapping into your pet's natural instincts and needs.

Enriching your pet's life doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Here are some easy ways to keep life interesting for your furry friend.

🐾 Training and tricks - Teach new tricks or practice existing skills to provide mental stimulation and bond with your pet.

👃 Scent games - Hide treats around the house for your pet to find, or use a snuffle mat to engage their sense of smell.

🧩 DIY puzzles - Create puzzles using items like a rolled-up towel with treats inside or a cardboard box filled with empty water bottles.

📦 Obstacle courses - Set up a course using pillows, boxes, or tunnels in your home or garden.

🪟 Window views - Create a comfortable window perch for your cat or a chair by the window for your dog to watch the world go by.

💬 SHARE your enriching activities in the comments and inspire us!

A huge shout-out to our talented team members who’ve been busy knitting, crocheting, and felting beautiful purple poppies to honour the service and sacrifice of animals in war.

This is part of the Purple Poppy Appeal, a national campaign run by the The War Horse Memorial to remember animals who served alongside people in conflicts past and present.

✨ At Millcroft, we wanted to pay tribute in our own way:

- Felt poppies for dogs (yes, our pet patients are getting involved too!)

- Knitted and crocheted poppies for our staff to wear with pride

💜 Our creative poppy-making crew includes:

- Felt team: Jude, Rose, Bronwyn, Lesley Ann, Claire I, Claire D, Daisy H

- Knitters: Julie, Vicki T, Gillian

- Crocheters: Nichola and Louise

📸 We'd love to see your pets wearing their poppies too!

Thank you to our team for sharing their time, creativity and compassion to support this special cause 💜🐴🐾
