The Process of Grooming your Asian Arowana

First of all we need to start with a simple understanding of Scale levelling when it comes to Asian Arowana. Asian Arowana’s depending on the strain have a maximum capability of achieving a scale level of 6 which is know as Crossback, meaning scales show colour side to side across the back. I’ll attach an image to the post to explain.

Grooming is the name of the process used to support the development of enhancing scale levelling, shine and colour spread % of your Arowana.

In this article we will focus on the strains where the process of grooming can be very effective, Malaysian Golden Crossback (all base colours Gold, blue etc.), Batik & Super Red (Grade 1)

Tanning is just one element of the grooming process & below we have summarised the key factors that influence your results when grooming your Asian Arowana …..

1)GENETICS
The Genetics of your Asian Arowana play an incredibly important role when it comes to what can be achieved on a permanent basis.
As with humans your genetics and skin colour are permanent and can not be changed.
So, Buy your Asian Arowana from a trusted & reputable seller that can guarantee the source (Farm) and its bloodline.
Nowadays it’s all to common to see Farms crossbreeding in a mass production environment with multiple strains in the same ponds, this is to reduce the cost of additional resources required to keep them separate. This makes guaranteeing appearance and genetics almost impossible. There are however still farms that focus on Bloodline conservation and good genetics, our Supplier the DreamFish Farm are on of those farms.
Do your homework before buying guys.

2)AQUARIUM ENVIRONMENT
Whilst Tanning ….
Malaysian Golden (all base colours) - Ideally the aquarium needs to have white back, bottom and sides to reflect the light and deliver best results. Avoid dark coloured aquariums at this stage.
Super Red Arowana - Can be tanned in either dark or light Aquariums but will show higher intensity of the red colouration in a Black environment.

After the Tanning process is complete …..
Malaysian Golden all base colours (Bluebase etc.) should be moved to an aquarium with a black background to intensify the base colour. You MUST complete the tanning process before moving to a black aquarium to ensure you lock in your crossover, here is where bad genetics will rear their heads. Poor genetics will lead to the fish beginning to lose its crossover once added to a black aquarium.

Water conditions ….
A decent filtering system with good and consistent water parameters are a fundamental requirement. Regular maintenance and water changes are advised.

A top factor in Asian Arowana colour is water quality as with many types of fish, shortcut here at your peril.

3)DIET
A varied diet that ticks all the nutritional boxes will also support your Asian Arowana’s journey to full potential. A mix of live insects, high quality pellets & Some Vitamin/ Mineral supplements is recommended.

4)THE TANNING PROCESS
Tanning is defined as exposing your Arowana’s scales to a BRIGHT LIGHT to as closely as possible mimic the effect of natural sunlight. This if done correctly will ensure that a scale shine level of 6 is achieved (Crossover)

First of all the best tanning light is natural sunlight (nothing of man made origin will rival it) however we can’t all keep our Arowana’s in a pond so our light selection is important.

Choosing a Tanning light :
Your tanning light needs to tick a few boxes to be effective ….
Ideally it should be higher than 10000 kelvin (White) however there are modern tanning lights that are lower Kelvin than this but still output the required level of UVA & UVB to tan the fish.
Submersible/ waterproof lighting is recommended to ensure there are no issues with light pe*******on as UVA & UVB will not pe*****te through aquarium glass. The other option here is lids with netting or grills to allow light pe*******on and usage of T5/ T8 lamps. Coloured lights in our experience are less effective.

WHEN TO START TANNING
Tanning Malaysian Golden Crossback should begin when the fish is around 8-10inch in size & should continue until the fish reaches between 15-18inch’s in size.

The time to start tanning a Super Red Arowana is different to the above and is based on looking for Red appearing in the cheeks and on the rims of scales to around 2-3mm.

Tanning your Arowana is a process and requires commitment and patience to achieve the best results as it can take years.

TANNING TIMES & DAILY SCHEDULE
We recommend creating a natural tanning environment with regards to timing for your Asian Arowana.
Setting the Light on a timer to turn on early morning & off in the late evening. Your fish will guide you on the limits with regards to hours each day, it’s also better to phase in the approach over a number of weeks.
Bear in mind that fish do need to rest and sleep to rejuvenate and be at their best health.

OTHER RELEVANT CONTENT & FAQ

What is Full Helmet/ FULL GOLDEN HEAD?
Some Malaysian Golden Arowana will have strong enough genetics to achieve a fully Golden Head, this is sought after in todays Arowana Market and is sometimes described as 24k. These fish are generally selected by the farm at around 5 inch in size & are then put in white fibreglass tanks to maintain this characteristic before being sold as 24K GH. Golden Head requires exemplary commitment to the tanning process until the fish is of age/size to lock in this feature.

Are there certain strains of Asian Arowana that are genetically constrained even if tanning is applied ?
Yes, RTG (Red Tail Golden), High Back, Super High Back, Banjar Red and any cross breeds will not achieve permanent Crossover. You may however improve levelling and shine level by utilising the grooming process.
