Colne Valley Vets

Colne Valley Vets Colne Valley Vets is part of Linnaeus Veterinary Ltd (A Mars Company). We are a companion animal veterinary practice based at The Hythe in Colchester.

For over seventy-five years, Colne Valley Vets have been looking after pets in Colchester and in that time we have developed a strong bond with many of the families in our community. With more than half of our current staff having been with the practice for over ten years, and some in excess of twenty years, we aim to provide a warm and friendly service where you will see familiar faces every time

you visit. With a team of experienced vets, we can deal with the needs of a wide range of domestic pets, from hamsters to dwarf rabbits to giant dogs and Bengal cats! Established in 1947, and originally based in outbuildings behind a house in Military Road in the Newtown area of Colchester, Colne Valley Veterinary Practice moved into our current, large and purpose built premises in 1998. Built over two floors and with five spacious consulting rooms, our veterinary surgery has been designed with our patients in mind. We aim to be the friendliest and most caring vets in Colchester. We will always try to do our very best for your pet AND for you. We know that coming to a veterinary practice can be stressful at times so we will always try to help you feel at ease whenever we can. Why not browse our site or better still, come down to our surgery at the Hythe for a visit?

Extra toe beans?! 🫘

Cutie Binx came in for his first health check and vaccines with Vet Will recently.

Binx is known as a polydactyl cat - meaning he has extra toes!! Binx has 2 extra toes on both front feet - don’t be learning how to use them now! 😂

Not the cone of shame! 😳

Poor Rex! He had a little procedure done recently, and he did like to lick his wound. We really need to discourage our patients from doing this and for Rex, it meant wearing a plastic buster collar.

This doesn’t work for all our patients, but we have lots of options available, from T-shirts to soft flexible collars!

**REUNITED! Thanks everyone!**

Is anyone missing me? 🥹

This little girl has been handed into us after hanging around the Kendal Road area of New Town over the last couple of days.

She is microchipped, but there are no contact details as it hasn’t been registered.

She has the tip of her left ear missing, which maybe a sign that she has previously been a feral. She’s very friendly and loves some fuss now!

If anyone can help, please call 01206 794695. We won’t be taking rehoming requests at this time.

Walkies with Bruno 🫶

Handsome Dutch Shepherd Bruno came in to spend the day with us last week for his castration.

Once awake from their anaesthetic, our patients spend time in the garden with our nursing assistants and have some extra TLC ♥️. They also all enjoy some well deserved lunch 😋

Have you checked your details are up to date on your pets microchip recently? 🤔

Did you know, of the 28,015 stray dogs handled by local authorities last year, an estimated 4352 dogs were unable to be reunited with their families simply because the details on their microchip were incorrect? (Dogs Trust, 2023) 🐶

And with our feline friends, an estimated 2.3 million owned cats are not microchipped, with top reasons being that their cat doesn't go far, or go outside (CATS Report, 2024) 🐱

It's very easy to check the details of your pets microchip and can be done by contacting the company that have your details registered.

Need help, not sure if your pet is chipped or needs microchipping? Give us a call on 01206 794695

Camera shy Michel 🥹

Michel popped in to see us to have her microchip checked, and also to take some pesky matts off from her tummy. She was such a good girl for this and was very happy for the fuss!

This beautiful girl has come over from Ukraine!

Cuddles with Aunty Yasmin 🥰

Wanda got into a little bit of mischief recently, and couldn’t help herself to a mushroom growing at home.

As we didn’t know what kind of mushroom Wanda had eaten, we decided it was going to be safer to make her vomit to bring it back up, rather than risking any horrible side effects from anything poisonous! 🍄‍🟫

She was keen for cuddles, and our nursing assistant Yasmin was more than happy to oblige!

If you think your pet has eaten anything they shouldn’t have, then it’s always worth a phone call to us to check it’s okay. When it comes to mushrooms, try and take a photo of nearby mushrooms, or bring in any mushroom remnants for us to try and identify.

It’s that time of year again… 🎇

Fireworks can be a source of anxiety for alot of our friends, but luckily we have ways we can help!

Ways we can help our pets can be:
💥 Walking/exercising our pets during the day
💥 Calming music on
💥 Making a safe den, where they can hide and settle if they feel they need to
💥 Provide distractions - brain games, lick-e-mats etc
💥 Use of pheromones such as Adaptil, Feliway or Pet Remedy
💥 Moving our small furries such as rabbits/guinea pigs inside for the evening
💥 Consider keeping cats indoors
💥 And if all else fails… discuss with your vet about any medication available.

This is also a great time to make sure microchip details are correct, in case the worst happens and your pet does escape.

Misty and Jaffa enjoying their den! Their own safe space in a quieter part of the house, with calming music to keep them relaxed
