This week produced another first for me! My first Pharaoh Hound, ‘Rogan’, 5 months, and two Cirneco’s (Italian Hunting Dogs) ‘Enzo’ (8 yrs) and ‘Porter’ (5 yrs).
I was asked by their human Mum and Dad Paul and Anne-Marie to do puppy training for the excited ‘Rogan’ but once I saw the three dogs together it was obvious that all 3 needed training (as well as Mum and Dad! 👍🤣
A great session was had showing them how to calm the dogs down, teaching lead walking and in particular stopping the squabbling between the dogs as a few fights had taken place.
A work in progress for all the dogs but hopefully they are on the right path now with hard work from Paul and Anne-Marie both ‘singing from the same hymn sheet!’🤞👍🐾🐕

A brilliant example of recalling a dog. The owner/carer of this dog has built a truly strong bond, trust and respect with his dog. This is done over time, each day rewarding his dog for coming back to him.
You should make yourself the best thing in your dogs life as constantly every day you give them EVERYTHING they truly want in this world; Praise, Reward, Attention and Affection, so why wouldn’t they come back to you?
If you consistently call your dog back to you and handsomely reward them, be it food, praise, or touch, ( or all 3) 100% of the time, then the chances of your dog coming back when they hear that magic word ‘Come!’ then why wouldn’t they come back to you?!! 👍🐾🐕‍🦺🐕🦮🐩🐶

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️UPDATE! ‘Bam Bam’ has found his forever home! Thank you for everyone’s interest! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

A friend of my Mums is unfortunately having to rehome her beloved ‘Bam Bam’, an 8 year old ‘Chi Poo’ (Chihuahua/Poodle Cross) due to serious illness. It is a very sad decision that she has had to make and is looking for another loving person who can give ‘Bam Bam’ the love and attention he needs.❤️🐾🐶🐩 #
He is fully vaccinated and is in good health. He currently resides in Alresford, Essex.

If anyone knows of a suitable new carer then please could they contact my Mum Helen on telephone number 07562 145757 to arrange viewing.

What qualifications do you have? 🤔 A great question that not everyone asks of the person they ask to help train part of their family with whom they have invested a lot of money, love, and time for! 👍🐾🐕🦮🐕‍🦺🐩🐶

With the dog training world being unregulated, anyone can start up a dog training business without any qualifications at all! Even many so called ‘qualifications’ can be obtained by simply completing a few hours on a Zoom course or an online course, and are then apparently labelled ‘specialists’! 🤔

I was recently asked by a client what dog behaviour qualifications I had and what qualifications and tests did I have to pass to become a Police Dog Handler.

That got me thinking about what I actually had to go through to achieve my life long ambition of becoming a fully qualified Police Dog Handler and being the successful dog behaviour professional that I am today.

The truth is, the process is both demanding and thorough, ensuring only the most capable officers and dogs are selected for this highly specialised role.

First of all I had to pass a paper application to be selected for interview. Often many applications are processed each time vacancies arise within the dog unit. Being so keen to become a Police Dog Handler I basically applied every year for my first few years before only being able to apply when a vacancy was advertised. Finally after ten years of applying, I was selected for interview.
The interview consisted of a panel of four male officers of various ranks, Sgt, Inspector, Chief Inspector, a Police Dog Trainer, and a civilian female from the HR dept. From there, those successfully selected then undertake a two-week ‘suitability course’, where their ability to handle dogs, maintain welfare standards, and manage kennel care is closely assessed.
Successful candidates from that course then progress to a 13-week basic Police Dog course with their newly allocated police dog. (Sometimes the first time the two have met each other). This intensive training course covers obedience training, searching (for people and property) tracking, and manwork (i.e. chasing and detaining criminals, handler protection) culminating in a final test overseen by an independent assessor. Passing this course marks the beginning of operational duties as a police dog team.

Once operational, handlers complete monthly training days where they are continually assessed. Any failure could mean the dog and handler are removed from operational duties. They also have to pass an annual fitness test and partake in a two week ‘Police Dog refresher course’ where again they are assessed as a ‘team’ to make sure they are capable of working the streets in a safe and controlled fashion.

Every year I would also compete in the Essex Police Dog Trials, an inter force competition to showcase our dogs skills in tracking, obedience, agility, searching (for people and property) and manwork.
I finally achieved my lifelong ambition when in 2013 I won the overall competition plus the Tracking trophy with my last Police Dog ‘Rapha’. ❤️

Having explained all that to my client, I must say they were quite impressed and stated ‘Wow! Not many people have qualifications like that!’

In addition to that, in order to keep my learning up to date, since retiring from the Police I have attained a Dog Behaviour Practitioner Diploma qualification with Merit from The British College of Canine Studies’ (BCCS) and I have nearly finished a Level 4
‘Understanding and working with Canine Behaviour: Consultations, Foundations and Function of Behaviour’ Course with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT).
I have also attended an in house course with The Dog Training College (DTC) where I attained their qualification as a Canine Body Language Instructor and approved dog trainer.

Nb.
Funnily enough I still do not qualify for certain pet insurance companies to work with their clients, not having been associated with certain dog training
establishments. 😱

As you can hopefully tell, I love the job I do and feel I have worked hard to achieve where I am!
Being paid to do your hobby is the most satisfying thing a person can do! Happy days! 👍🐾🐕‍🦺🐕🐩🐶🦮

Little 15 week old Belgian Malinois ‘Cricket’ was my client yesterday. He had been acquired by his Pawrents Brian and Lynda from ‘The Dogs Trust’ two weeks ago. As you will no doubt know, Malinois’ are very high energy dogs and this constant attention seeking and excitement was causing Brian and Lynda one or two problems!
A great session was had explaining to them how to create calmness in ‘Cricket’ and reward all of his good behaviour. It will be hard work for the next few months or more but hopefully it’ll prove it was all worth while!
Keep up the good work guys! 🤞👍🐾🐕

11 month old ‘Gunner’ a Siberian Husky was my client for the day yesterday. A lovely excitable dog that can sometimes mouth and hump you to show his affection! 😱
Added with a bit of dog reactivity and pulling on the lead gave his owners a slightly stressful time!
A great day was had by all, and as I had expected,‘Gunner’ took to the training really well. Now for all the family to keep up the consistent training to make that penny drop! 🤞
Good luck guys! 👍🐾🐕🦮🐩🐕‍🦺

Is your dog reactive on walks?
Barking… lunging… pulling?
It’s not bad behaviour — it’s a ‘safety gap’ problem!

In my ‘one to one’ dog reactivity sessions I use what I call the G.A.P. Method - ‘Gap Awareness Protocol’

My G.A.P. Method (Gap Awareness Protocol) focuses on identifying and respecting your dog's "safety gap”.

During my one hour sessions you learn how to:
🐕‍🦺 Find your dog’s Safety Gap (their personal comfort distance). How far away do dogs need to be before your dog reacts?
🐶 Reading your dog’s body language before they react. What is your dog saying to you?
🐕 Identifying your dogs ‘reactivity’. Is it aggression or excitement or even both?
🦮 Mastering safe lead handling using long lines & retractable leads.
🐩 Building to calmer, more confident walks with your dog.

Why it works:
The G.A.P. Method is based on dog psychology not guesswork. By identifying your dog's unique "safety gap" and learning to manage it, you'll prevent reactive behaviour before it happens - making walks safer, calmer, and more enjoyable for you both.

⏳ Hourly sessions – limited spots available!

📍 Held at the Gosbecks Archeological Fields, Maldon Road, Colchester CO2 0SJ or I can attend your location if not local to Colchester.

📅 Mainly Saturdays but can be arranged for week days if more convenient.

Contact me via my website www.stevehutleydogrehab.co.uk to book a session with me.
