The best time to begin a dental care routine is when pets are young, as this gets them used to it early. However, older pets can learn new tricks and there are plenty of other options available if you think introducing tooth brushing might be a stretch… Whatever their age, speak to any of our team at your next visit where we can advise you on the ideal dental home care plan to suit you and your pet.

♥️ Happy Valentines Day to you and your significant others - your pets!

When celebrating today it's worth remembering that chocolates, flowers, wine, and candlelit dinners can pose some potential threat to our feline friends and canine companions.

Here's a list of items to keep away from our pets to ensure your Valentine's Day isn't spent with us at the practice 😉

🍫 Chocolate can be toxic to cats and dogs, as their bodies cannot properly digest it. Dark chocolate, in particular, contains a high amount of theobromine, which is toxic to pets.

🌹 A pretty bouquet can brighten up any room, but be careful. Some flowers are highly toxic to pets! Lilies, tulips, daffodils, and oleanders are a few examples.

🍭 Keep that sweet bowl somewhere your pet can’t get to. Many of these sweet treats contain xylitol, which is toxic to our furry pals. Hard sweets and sweet wrappers also pose choking risks for playful pets.

🍷 Alcohol can cause major problems for pets, even in small quantities.

🕯️ Be careful when lighting candles around your pets, as they may accidentally knock them over or get hurt by the flames or hot wax.

🎁 Gift wraps and trimmings may seem like toys to your pets, but if swallowed, they can cause severe stomach problems like vomiting, diarrhoea, and intestinal blockages.

During we are talking about dental problems in dogs and cats.
Periodontal disease occurs when the tissues that surround teeth become infected and inflamed. Bacterial plaque build-up on the teeth causes inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) if not removed. Over time, infection and inflammation spread deeper into the tooth sockets, destroying the bone around the tooth roots – meaning teeth may need to be extracted (if they haven’t already fallen out!).
The good news is that plaque can be removed with daily dental home care, and gingivitis can be reversed if caught early.
Speak to us about the best dental care regime for your pet to help keep their teeth clean and healthy!

Sometimes we don’t always understand why our pet behaves in the way it does or what makes our beloved animal anxious and fearful, or even aggressive.

We have a dedicated area in our waiting room that has items which can help calm fearful and anxious pets, and provide stimulation whilst they are learning new behaviours.

We also have a behaviourist on our team that will be happy to help with any issue you may have, from learning a new technique to overcoming unwanted issues.

✨✨IMPORTANT UPDATE AND CHANGES TO MEDICATION PRESCRIPTIONS ✨✨

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) is the governing body for all vet practices in the UK. They provide guidelines for all vets and nurses to follow. The RCVS has recently updated its guidance on prescribing medication, especially antibiotics and anti-parasite treatment.

These changes have been put in place to ensure responsible antibiotic and antiparasitic use, to reduce resistance and reduce environmental contamination. This issue affects animal and human health.

💊 ANTIBIOTICS
Your vet can only prescribe antibiotic treatment during an appointment where they have examined your pet. They cannot prescribe over the phone or in person without your pet present. This includes antibiotic tablets, liquids, ear drops, eye drops and creams.

🪲ANTI-PARASITICS
For all year-round flea, tick and worm treatment your vet must write the specific product and dose on your pets file at the time of a physical examination e.g. at vaccination or other consultation. We have been trying to update files on recent appointments seen, however if there is no record on your pets file, we may ask you to please come in for a free-of-charge one off examination before any more flea and worming and be dispensed for your pet.

🥰 We appreciate your patience and kindness towards our team while we adapt our protocols to the new RCVS legislation, and apologise for any inconvenience. These guidelines carry legal weight so our vets are required to follow them.

📧 If you have any feedback please contact the RCVS https://animalowners.rcvs.org.uk/about-us/contact-us/

The full RCVS guidance can be found here https://www.rcvs.org.uk/.../advi.../under-care-new-guidance/

ONGOING LONG-TERM MEDICATIONS / REPEAT PRESCRIPTIONS
🩺 As previously, we need to clinically assess your pet every 6 months to be able to continue to dispense long term medications. This includes medication such as Thyrnorn, Apoquel, Vetoryl, Epiphen and includes written prescriptions.

🩺This 6 monthly discussion with your vet will include a physical examination of your pet. We may suggest appropriate additional blood or urine tests /blood pressure testing for ongoing monitoring depending on your pet’s condition.

We also offer written prescriptions for 3 months or 6 months worth of medication – please speak to your vet for more information.

🐾 Happy New Year to all our wonderful clients, pets and friends!!

👩‍🏭 Ou nurses Elona and Vicky have been busy redesigning our waiting area at the practice and we now have defined areas for puppies, cats, kittens, dental hygiene and behaviour.

🪥 Dental area.

Did you know that your pet’s teeth are as important as your own?

When bacteria in the mouth mixes with leftover food it forms a film that covers the tooth enamel and over time this hardens into plaque that is difficult to remove. This can lead to teeth becoming rotten and infections occurring in the mouth that can enter the blood stream, making your animal ill.

🦷 Have you ever considered brushing your pet’s teeth? - This is really something you should consider when you get a new puppy because as they get older, they don’t really want you trying to get into their mouth and brushing. However, there are other ideas that can be as good! If you can there are some great methods and lovely poultry flavoured toothpaste.

What about a dental diet – a proven way to help remove plaque, these special biscuits are quite unique and tasty too!

Chews can be useful too because by chewing they help scrape tartar away.
Kong have a fantastic range of dental chews that really get in between the teeth helping them work.

Our nurses are happy to help and talk through any option with you.
