Dave's Dogs - Dog Walking and Training

Dave's Dogs - Dog Walking and Training Professional dog walker & trainer in Colchester, Essex. Making your dog's walk the best part of their day! Hi, I'm Dave!
(2)

I've been a dog lover my whole life, but spent 18 years working in marketing and design. My journey into dog walking and training started with my elderly Labrador and best buddy, Sylvester. When he developed arthritis, I gained a qualification in canine hydrotherapy and worked at a local centre to help him and other local dogs out. When I lost Sylvester in 2023, I adopted Albert, a two-year-old Hu

ngarian Vizsla with a whole bunch of issues, through no fault of his own. This little guy sparked my passion for learning more about dog behaviour and training. I studied with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT), where I learned all about positive training methods, which focus on rewarding good behaviour rather than punishing unwanted behaviour. I'm fully insured, DBS checked, and I never walk more than four dogs at a time. I believe in 'natural' walks, where each dog is encouraged to use their natural senses to explore, rather than relying on balls and toys. Plus, I offer convenient collection and drop-off services for all my clients in West Colchester and surrounds. As a pet parent myself, I understand how important your dog is to you and that you need someone you can trust to look after them. With my passion for dogs and understanding of their behaviour, your dog will be in safe hands with me. I look forward to meeting you and your pup!

🌟 Introducing Solo Training Walks in Colchester! 🌟

Does your dog prefer one-on-one time rather than group walks? Or maybe they need some extra support due to reactivity or a history as a rescue? I’m thrilled to announce my new Solo Training Walks for dogs who need that personalised approach.

Each solo walk is tailored to your dog’s unique needs. During our time together, I’ll gently work on specific training goals, whether it’s building confidence or managing reactivity. Some dogs might even be able to join group walks later on, while others will always benefit most from solo walks—and that’s perfectly fine.

Spaces are limited, so do reach out soon if you think this could be right for your dog. Let’s make each walk a positive experience, building trust and skills along the way.

PS: Don't worry, your dog won't be driving my van!

My little friend Alfie had his Crown Jewels removed yesterday so I was asked to pop in for a couple of hours this afternoon to keep him company and make sure he was OK, whilst his mum and dad were at work.

There was me thinking he’d be subdued and I could sit and read a book whilst he slept on my lap, forgetting that he’s a 1 year old cocker with A LOT OF ENERGY!

No walkies due to his stitches so we did some gentle scatter feeding in the garden to provide some mental enrichment.

He’s such a little sweetheart with the loveliest nature.

Lovely Lenny is a young lad and can be a little nervous out in the world. Our eventual aim is to add him to a suitable small group walk, but for now we’re doing some 1-1 walks to help build his confidence and gradually build exposure to some of the things that make him nervous.

He’s an angel and is now on a 5m long line to give him a bit more freedom to explore his surroundings.

He’s a sweetheart with loads of potential!

🎆 Bonfire Night Awareness 🎆

Bonfire Night can be a tough time for many, not just for animals but for people too. The loud bangs and bright flashes from fireworks can cause stress and anxiety for dogs, cats, wildlife, and for people in our communities—especially the elderly, those with sensory sensitivities, and individuals with certain disabilities.

If you or your pets struggle with fireworks, here are some ways to create a calm environment tonight:

🟠 Set up a safe space – For pets, create a cosy spot with their favourite blanket or toy, where they can retreat from the noise and flashes. For people, drawing curtains and using soft lighting indoors can help reduce the impact of bright flashes. You can also try instigating gentle play with your dog when the bangs start. It worked surprisingly well with my old labrador. If they don't want to play, don't force it. Always comfort your dog if they're scared and don't ignore them like some "trainers" would tell you - it's nonsene.

🟠 Mask the noise – Playing calming music or turning on the TV can balance out sudden bangs, creating a more soothing background. Classic FM always play music for animals tonight.

🟠 Walk pets early – Try to walk dogs before dark to keep them safe indoors when fireworks start.

Let’s remember those who find this night distressing and support quieter, more considerate celebrations in the future. Stay safe, everyone.

Here's two minute of relaxing ambient music instead!
