We deal with all animal welfare issues in a large area of Essex. We have charity shops in Frinton on Sea, Chelmsford & Colchester (Prettygate).

We rescue and rehome animals and provide low cost veterinary help in clinics at Chelmsford & Colchester. We rely on donations, local fundraising and legacies to support our work with animal welfare in our branch area. Our new Branch area incorporates the former areas of Mid Essex, Essex North East and Essex North West, covering the towns of Colchester, Clacton, Chelmsford, Maldon, Brentwood, Bille

ricay, Braintree, Dunmow, Halstead & Witham. We also have 2 veterinary clinics in Great Baddow & Colchester. We provide the following
- Pet neutering scheme for people on certain government benefits.
- Subsidised veterinary clinic in Colchester and Chelmsford.
- Homecheck service to the RSPCA animal centres.
- Rehoming of some cats and dogs.
- Pet advice and guidance for local people.
- Community animal action events in conjunction with local RSPCA inspectors and vets e.g. microchipping, neutering, worm and flea treatments. Clinics

To be a client of the RSPCA Essex Mid & North Branch you will need to:
- live within our catchment area
- be a tenant
- not use animals for breeding and be in receipt of one of the following:
- Universal Credit / Incapacity Allowance / Income Support / JSA/ESA / State Pension. (plus Housing benefit which must be in the same name as benefit)

ID and proof of current address with a utility bill or a bank statement is needed. Register at the clinic in person between 12 noon and 2pm Monday to Thursday, with all necessary paperwork. Please note this is a LOW COST scheme, not a free veterinary service. We do charge a consultation fee and for any drugs used. Clinic Hours by appointment only:-
Mon, Tues and Thurs only 9 a.m. to 12.00, closed Fri, Sat, Sun and bank holidays

A year ago today. Lena, Trina and Freya completed their walking challenge and raised £803 (plus over £100 more in Gift Aid) to help us help local animals. They did this in memory of Milo, a much loved dog, who had sadly passed away a few weeks before. This video and Milo's story is told to supporters young and old at school assemblies, WI talks and corporate meetings as it promotes a beautiful message of love.
Miles for Milo really is the gift that keeps giving, inspiring others to do acts of kindness. Just for a minute, let Milo be your best friend by watching the video.

A massive thank you to Alex who has donated several items of jewellery and cat toys from her Trendy Cat range. Alex responded to our appeal for raffle prizes for the events we're doing with Support our Paras, Colchester Pride , Royal Association for Deaf people, and Guts UK as the Mayor of Colchester's charities of the year. It's so great to be supported by local businesses and when we met Alex we were so impressed with her range of animal related products that we bought some to sell in our Prettygate Shop. Alex also runs offering health and beauty treatments as well as Alex & Friends dog walking and cat sitting service.

Working in partnership is such a great way to build support and we're happy to promote and support those who help us. We'll display Alex's cards and flyers and give them some attention on our website & social media pages

DANGERS ☠️ FOR YOUR PETS 🐰 AT HALLOWEEN 🎃 - CHOCOLATE 🍫

While it is widely known that chocolate is toxic ☠️ to dogs 🐕‍🦺, it is often less recognized that other pets, including cats 🐱 and rabbits 🐰, are also at risk from chocolate 🍫ingestion.

The harmful component of chocolate 🍫 is called theobromine. Humans 👨 can metabolize theobromine efficiently, but pets process it at a much slower rate, leading to a build-up of toxins ☠️ in their systems. Theobromine poses a similar level of toxicity for cats 🐱 as it does for dogs 🐶. Generally, the darker the chocolate 🍫, the greater the risk it poses to your pet.

Although small quantities of chocolate 🍫 are unlikely to be life-threatening, they can cause symptoms such as vomiting 🤮 and diarrhoea 💩. Conversely, if a large amount of chocolate 🍫 is ingested, pets may exhibit more severe symptoms, including seizures, muscle tremors, irregular heartbeats 💓, and potentially fatal heart conditions 💀.

Signs of Chocolate 🍫Poisoning May Include:

- Diarrhoea 💩
- Vomiting 🤮
- Rapid breathing or panting
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Shaking
- Elevated body temperature 🌡
- Restlessness
- Abdominal discomfort
- Seizures
- Accelerated heart rate 💓

If you suspect that your pet has consumed a significant quantity of chocolate 🍫, it is crucial to contact your veterinarian 🩺 immediately.

Paddling pool day for Willow 😃

A few weeks ago, National RSPCA launched its new brand, with new adverts, posters and articles. We thought it would be nice to share little video which explains some of the reasons behind the change. Clearly with any rebrand, comes some cost, but the aim here is that the support generated, far outweighs the outlay and ultimately, more animals are helped. As one of around 140 RSPCA branches, we are a separately registered charity, raising our own income to pay for all the animal welfare work we do. We will be gradually moving over to the new brand over the next year. With this change, comes opportunity for any local business who may wish to sponsor some of our branded items. These include vet staff uniforms, volunteer t-shirts/running vests, gazebos, flags/banners and potentially a branch van. Please let us know if you think you can help 💙🐾

👀Check out our visitor 🐢 This is a Terrapin (red eared slider to be precise) 👂🏼 This little one was found wondering the streets as a stray - most likely a previous pet that had been release some time ago into a local pond. (It is an offence to release a pet terrapin into local wildlife) 🚫👎🏽 Since 2016 Terrapins have been listed on the governments “List of invasive and non native (alien) animals. Meaning if you are wanting to own one as a pet in the UK you must obtain a licence and follow the applying criteria of keeping Terrapins. We receive many calls from members of the public concerned about the welfare of animals, each one is assessed to determine the level of suffering. As a charity with limited resources we’re not always able to respond in the way that would be ideal or as quickly as the emergency services can. In some instances we may not be able to respond at all, due to the way the RSPCA must prioritise the welfare concerns that are brought to our attention.
