One of our clients Arlo has a new tiktok page and his dad made this awesome video from his hydrotherapy session this week! Arlo was diagnosed with elbow and hip dysplasia a few years ago but regular hydro keeps him fit and active all year round💪🏼🐾🐕
Nancy rehabilitation
Before 2024 comes to an end, we want to share one of our highlights of the year. Nancy suffered severe pelvic and hindlimb damage after a traumatic accident. She was rushed in to the vets and treated as an emergency case straight away. It was touch and go for the first few days and the vets were unsure if they’d be able to save her leg but with a combined effort from all the team, she stabilised as was able to go home.
This is where the rehab team stepped in, introducing combined therapies such as laser, acupuncture and massage as well as physio exercises to improve her nerve function and muscle strength. It was a slow process with a big set back when we realised she had suffered ligament damage in her ankle which was unable to be surgically repaired. However, Nancy showed us she was a fighter and she gradually returned the ability to walk run and play!
We all wish our clients a very happy and safe beginning to the new year! We aim to continue providing the very best care to all our clients throughout 2025❤️
⛄️ It’s about time my bunnies got into the christmas spirit 🎄🐰🎉
Proprioceptive kinesiotaping
Bracken came for one of his regular physio sessions with Esme last week to help in the management of his arthritis. Bracken receives laser therapy, massage and tailored exercises to target his proprioception and hindlimb muscle condition. Last week, we also tried some kinesiotape to stimulate the nerves on his back feet to improve hindend awareness whilst walking🐾🐾

Palpation assessment
Finally step 4 of our physiotherapy assessment is palpation. This is where we feel the muscles, assessing for heat, swelling, tension or indications of pain. Whilst as therapists our touch is trained to detect subtle differences in muscle texture, we rely heavily on the behaviour of the patient. They can display various indicators during assessment which may indicate that they feel uncomfortable - this can include giving a “side eye”, lip licking, grumbling or physically moving away/sitting down.
We find most commonly that alot of dogs carry tension in their backs, being on all four feet rather than just two! A big indicator of muscle soreness along the back and shoulders are muscle fasciculations or triggers points - where the pressure applied causes nerves in the skin to fire due to compensatory hypertension.
If your dog has suddenly become a little wary of touch in a certain area or you notice these skin responses when you stroke them, they may benefit from an assessment to see if we can offer any treatment to help! Please contact the practise if you are interested🐾🐕
