Palpation assessment
Finally step 4 of our physiotherapy assessment is palpation. This is where we feel the muscles, assessing for heat, swelling, tension or indications of pain. Whilst as therapists our touch is trained to detect subtle differences in muscle texture, we rely heavily on the behaviour of the patient. They can display various indicators during assessment which may indicate that they feel uncomfortable - this can include giving a “side eye”, lip licking, grumbling or physically moving away/sitting down.
We find most commonly that alot of dogs carry tension in their backs, being on all four feet rather than just two! A big indicator of muscle soreness along the back and shoulders are muscle fasciculations or triggers points - where the pressure applied causes nerves in the skin to fire due to compensatory hypertension.
If your dog has suddenly become a little wary of touch in a certain area or you notice these skin responses when you stroke them, they may benefit from an assessment to see if we can offer any treatment to help! Please contact the practise if you are interested🐾🐕
Kira was very vocal when we told her she could go home after her overnight stay ❤️🥰
👑 King Clive 👑
After his afternoon Power Nap, he given his favourite treats ‘lick lix’! He would eat these all day if he could! How puuuurrrrrfect is he🫶😻
Don't forget to turn your clocks back tomorrow 😀
Time for our CT slice comparison fact!
How do we compare?
Speed of Scanning:
128-slice scanners are significantly faster, completing scans in less time. This is particularly helpful with animals as it helps reduce the amount sedation required
64-slice scanners are slower, though still quick, but may require slightly more time for complex imaging.
Keep an eye out for our next comparison on Monday.

Loki swimming update
Does anyone remember our post a few months ago about Loki the young husky who has suffered with coordination issues from birth? Well here he is during his session with the hydro team this week! Now 9 months old, he’s tripled in size and has become a swimming pro! Since coming weekly for swimming for the past 5 months, he is able to take steps by himself whilst assisted with a harness. Hydro has allowed him to build up enough strength in his back legs to make him suitable for a wheelchair. This will give him lots more freedom to explore and go on walks. He’s such a lovely boy and we’re excited to hear about all his new adventures as he continues to come swimming🌿☀️🏖️
Is your senior cat slowing down due to osteoarthritis? We can offer a revolutionary once-monthly injection designed specifically to relieve chronic pain in older cats , and the first dose is FREE until November🤩🤩Help your furry friend regain comfort and be their normal silly selves—please ask us about the injection today! 🐾
Idwal was super happy to be in the practice today! He had a quick check up and had his flea and wormer!😍🫶
Jerry was in yesterday to be castrated and have a full MOT! He is in great health and here he is enjoying his afternoon snack post surgery 🐇🐰🥬
We thought we'd start the morning with a success story and a happy post. Margot recently came to us feeling miserable and not wanting to anything. She came to us for second opinion as had been advised previously not to go for walks. Various options were discussed including regenerative medication. Her owners researched stem cell treatment and were keen to go ahead. As you can see from the video Margot is a different dog and loving life as she should ❤️
Gait analysis for rehabilitation
The next step of our physiotherapy assessment process, the gait assessment! Analysing your dogs movement is so important as treatment with physiotherapy exercises or hydrotherapy will have a direct impact on muscle recruitment and mobility💪🏼🐕💦
By looking at the patient moving from all angles and at a variety of speeds, we can observe any abnormal movement which could indicate compensatory mechanisms for muscular/joint pain, weakness or restriction🤕 It also provides the opportunity to see progression through their treatment programme as we can look for improvements in elements such as higher head carriage, greater joint mobility, better straightness through the spine and reduced toe drag🌟👍🏼
