Attention all cat owners 🐾🐱

You may have heard that new laws are being introduced in England where all cats must be microchipped by the 10th of June or face a fine of up to £500. We would like to reassure our clients that this is not yet being enforced in Wales. However, as your trusted Veterinary Practice we still heavily recommend our clients to consider getting your cats microchipped as a simple and effective way to be reunited with your feline friend should they get lost or stolen.

Microchipping is a quick and easy procedure that we can do in a 10 minute appointment, and the details provided are inputted into a national database that all veterinary practices have access to.

If you would like further information then please do not hesitate to contact the surgery on 01492 530 030 📞

Dear Clients,

Due to your wonderful support over recent years, Conway Road Veterinary Surgery has continued to grow and flourish and in order to cater for our expanding client base, whilst maintaining our aspirations to provide excellent facilities and care to your pets, the surgery will soon be undertaking a major refurbishment to improve and expand the facilities available on site.

This exciting development will be conducted in two phases.

Phase 1 will see internal work on the existing building, starting with the instalment of a large platform lift in the preparation room that will connect all three floors of the building allowing us to transport your pet around the practice with improved comfort and ease which will then allow the second floor of the practice to be utilised to provide the following:-

1. A spacious state of the art operating theatre
2. Enhanced modern laboratory
3. Larger cattery to provide your feline friends a more comfortable stay
4. Spacious staff room and overnight care facilities
5. Additional preparation room with recovery kennels for surgical patients

In addition, we will be re-designing the first floor to provide a second operating theatre and enhanced preparation room and dental suite. The ground floor will mainly be utilised for office and extra storage space. We will be investing heavily to enhance equipment and facilities in the practice over all three floors.

In order to accommodate these improvements, there may be some minimal disruption within the surgery at certain times although we would like to assure all of our clients that we will remain fully open and function normally throughout the renovation in order to continue to provide the highest standard of care for your pets.

Phase 2 – Subject to planning permission, a two storey purpose built extension to the rear of the building. More details to follow.

Nurse Consultations

At the surgery we offer nurse consultations for you and your pet. These include services such as nail trims, 6 month puppy and kitten health checks, 6 month geriatric checks, post operative checks, expressing a**l glands, conscious de-matt/grooming, as well as certain injections providing the pet has been seen by the vet prior for first injections/check-up.

We are also offering nutritional consultations with our nurse Elen. If you feel that you have any dietary questions, for example; about weight gain/loss, how much food to feed you pet or regarding any medical diets your pet may have been prescribed, then we can arrange an appointment for you to come in and discuss this further with Elen.

There are also geriatric clinics available where we can routinely discuss how your pet is doing. Once your pet is over the age of 7 years old these checks would be recommended every 6 months. During these checks the nurse can monitor their health and get a good overview of how they are doing as they are getting that little bit older. We can check blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature and carry out blood sampling. It is always best to get them checked regularly in order to notice any age related changes or to recognise any developing health issues early on.

The nurse can also carry out triage appointments. During busy times to ensure that you are not waiting longer than necessary your pet can be triaged by one of our nurses before having their appointment with the vet. This will involve gathering information about how your pet has been, what your concerns are and giving them an initial check over before the vet examines them.

We also have extended nurse consultations available at first/second vaccinations for puppies and kittens. This will be offered to you after your initial consultation with the vet, where one of the nurses can go through important information with you in depth. This will include topics such as what you should be feeding them, puppy socialisation, insurance etc.

At the point of booking your pet in for their first/second vaccinations we will let you know that this is how the appointment will run, so if you do have any questions regarding the newest member of your family then you can discuss these at your extended nurse consultation.

If you would like an appointment with one of our lovely nurses then please call the surgery on 01492 530030.

We are still seeking a forever home for this affectionate little boy, Sam. We think he is roughly 5-10 years old and has been neutered last week.

He has a sweet and loving personality once he feels comfortable in his environment. He has bonded with all of the nurses in the surgery and we think he would best suit a quiet home with no children as he can be abit shy.

If you have any enquiries or know of anyone that may be interested please do not hesitate to contact us for further information. 🐾

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons continually update this scheme to include more criteria to pass in order to receive certification that your surgery deserves this accreditation.

For the last few weeks we have had a lovely little boy staying with us at the surgery and he is looking for his forever home. He is called Sam and is approximately 5 years old. Originally he had been taken in as a stray and due to unforeseen circumstances has ended up in our care after his owner was taken ill.

He seems like a very sweet boy but he can be quite nervous and shy. He has been showing all the members of staff lots of affection and has been very gentle with all of us. He loves his treats and seems happy to be handled. He can be quite mischievous. He is currently entire but we are going to neuter him before he is re-homed.

Ideally we would suggest that he is the only animal in the household and also that he is not around young children. We believe he has been living indoors and outdoors in his past home so this would be the best set up for him going forward. We do not feel that he would suit being an indoor cat.

If you are interested in re-homing Sam or know someone who might be able to offer this little boy a loving home please contact the surgery on 01492 530030.

If you have been in to the surgery recently you will have noticed that there are a few new faces.

We have gained three additional members of staff and wanted to tell you a little bit more about each of them.

Hannah started working at the surgery earlier this year and will be starting her college course in September at Northop to train to become a nurse. Her passion for working with animals has stemmed from volunteer work carried out at the RSPCA. This encouraged her to pursue a career working in veterinary nursing. Hannah enjoys walking with her two French Bulldogs and hiking in the mountains.

Lucy is currently on placement at the surgery for the next year and has come to us from Harper Adams University. She is currently in her third year of training to become a veterinary nurse and has already undertaken a placement with us here at the surgery back in 2022, so she may look familiar to some of you. In her spare time Lucy enjoys horse riding and playing golf.

Elen is the newest member of staff and is a registered veterinary nurse. She has a keen interest in nurse consultations and has additional qualifications in the subject. In her spare time she loves paddle-boarding, walking the coastal path and spending time with her Sprocker Spaniel, Bon.

All of our new members of staff look forward to meeting you and your pets at the surgery. 🙂

London Marathon 2023

After successfully completing last years London Marathon, David has continued pounding the pavements training in preparation for a repeat performance (maybe even quicker!) in the next London Marathon on April 23rd 2023. He was very grateful and humbled by the donations received for Meningitis Research, his chosen charity for his 2022 race.
By running the 2023 London Marathon, he will be hoping to raise awareness and funds for both the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and Prostate Cancer Research. Both of these charities are close to his heart due to personal experiences of close family members. This always give a greater insight into the invaluable work that is provided and also further research needed to support these amazing charities.
After being diagnosed with a brain tumour shortly before her 5th Birthday in 2014, David's niece Grace initially received immediate life saving treatment at Birmingham Children's Hospital, her treatment journey then took her to America to receive specialist proton beam therapy whilst remaining under the care of B*H. In 2019 she was referred to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital for further advanced surgery due to complications resulting from the proton beam therapy, which we are pleased to say proved successful. Whilst still under medical monitoring, due to the care she has received she is able to lead a full and active life including regularly riding and successfully competing her pony. Her obvious love of animals gave her a positive focus throughout her treatment and she is now (alongside her mum) involved in the training of two ponies with the aim for them to provide therapy sessions.

David's dad has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and David has chosen this charity to raise more awareness of the facts surrounding this condition and also to assist in fundraising for additional research in to Prostate Cancer. Prostate Cancer Research 'work with the UK's top scientists with a shared aim of reducing morbidity, increasing survival rates and improving quality of life for men with prostate cancer'.
