PEA NOT HELPED? HERE'S WHAT TO DO NEXT

PEA has been shown in a clinical trial to significantly reduce itching in 2 out of 3 atopic dogs who reacting to environmental allergens (house dust, house dust mites, humans dander, mould, pollen, grass and other substances inside and outside the home).
Once parasites (fleas, lice, ticks and mites) and microbes (bacteria, fungi and yeasts) have been ruled out by a vet as the cause of an itchy skin (along with flea bite hypersensitivity which is still the commonest allergy in dogs) it's worth trialling PEA for 12 weeks to see if it helps as alternative to steroids, Apoquel, Atopica and Cytopoint.
And when this brings about a marked improvement the initial dose of PEA can be halved for maintenance.
What if PEA hasn't helped?
If this applies to your dog it means they either fall into the 1 out of 3 unresponsive group or they are itchy because they are reacting to food.
The next step is to:
1. Supplement as follows:
(a) Give Immunity at half the suggested daily amount.
Also give Insect plus Itch Relief remedy 3 times daily
Cut out all carbs and sugars from the diet, as explained here - https://www.vincethevet.co.uk/blog/food-fuelling-yesty-skin
(b) After 10 days if the stools remain well-formed, increase Immunity to the full amount.
Continue with Insect plus Itch Relief remedy 3 times daily.
(c) After 10 days, if the stools remain well-formed continue with Immunity and Insect plus Itch Relief as before.
Give Vitality at half the suggested daily amount for 10 days.
(d) After 10 days if the stools remain well-formed, continue with Immunity and Insect plus Itch Relief as before.
Increase Vitality to the full amount.
(e) After 10 days if the stools remain well-formed, continue with Immunity, Insect plus Itch Relief and Vitality as before.
Give this algal oil - https://www.timehealth.co.uk/product/vegan-omega3/ - one capsule per 25 - 30kg squeezed onto food daily. (Enter vincethevet15 at checkout on Time Health's website to receive 15% discount.)
NOTE
This combination of supplements helps to promote a more balanced and less reactive immune system over time (typically 3 - to 6 months or more), which is better able to tolerate exposure to allergens without creating the same intensity of itching or inflammation.
Also be sure to bathe regularly with clean water and pat dry to prevent a build up of allergens in the coat. A teaspoon or two of coconut or jojoba oil can be added to the final rinse to help provide a surface barrier to protect the skin underneath.
What to do if this supplementation doesn't help?
The next step is to conduct food trials to rule out dietary sensitivities.
