WHEN IS THE BEST AGE TO START PROTECTING YOUR DOG'S JOINTS?
It is estimated that 80% of dogs over 8 years of age show evidence of degenerative joint disease. To begin with these developments are often restricted to pathological changes in joints and associated musculoskeletal tissues, without obvious signs of stiffness, discomfort or loss of mobility.
This means a dog may look perfectly healthy even while joint function is deteriorating, as:
- joint fluid becomes more like water instead of oil, resulting in poorer lubrication of articular surfaces
- cartilage becomes less hydrated, thinner and more brittle, with a consequent loss of shock absorption and increase in friction during limb movement
- tendons, ligaments and fibrous tissues lose flexibility and become more at risk of sprains, strains and ruptures
- bony changes occur which cause inflammation
Ideally therefore, it is best to start supporting joints when they are still healthy, before any degenerative changes begin. And for many dogs this will be from around 6 YEARS OF AGE ONWARDS.
NOTE
If hip dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans, elbow dysplasia or a similar condition is diagnosed at any age, supplementation should be started immediately to preserve joint comfort and function for as long as possible.
For working dogs and those involved in agility / competitive sports such as Canicross it is also important to protect joints earlier than for the average pet, due to the increased stress these and similar activities place on joints and associated musculoskeletal tissues.
