We will be rehoming again on 15th March. These lovely ladies have spent their whole lives in cages! They will need that extra bit of TLC. We need lots more reservation to save them all. Please reserve at : www.freshstartforhens.co.uk
if you have room in your coops and hearts! ♥️ 🐓
Just a quick post to reassure everyone that rehoming is still very much allowed and going ahead... please don't let this put you off reserving hens.
We have unfortunately seen lots of people cancelling their reservations due to understandable confusion around what is and isn't allowed! This is unfortunately resulting in lots of hens potentially losing out on their forever homes and being sent to slaughter instead.
The bird flu situation is ever changing but the current rules apply to birds being brought together from multiple sources and then dispersed again, such as shows or poultry auctions. As the rescue hens are all coming from a single source farm, this does not constitute a gathering. Movement is only completely banned in the circles on the DEFRA map, the darker mauve areas are subject to a housing order (birds to be contained in a covered area) and the lighter pink area is subject to enhanced biosecurity such as use of boot dips and ground sanitizer. Screen shot attached of the map as it stands now, for reference.
Please just get in touch if you have any questions

There was a chicken lose on Buxton road (A54) heading towards the radio tower this evening. A lady had stopped trying to catch it. I helped and now have her safe with us as there were no houses close. Poor girl had no food in her crop and was quite lethargic. She’s having some rest and food with me but if anyone knows who may own her please ask them to get in touch.

We are a not for profit organisation, run entirely by volunteers who are dedicated to rehoming hens from the commercial egg production sector.
OUR AIM is to ensure as many people as possible are aware of the plight of the commercial hen, and demonstrate that there are alternatives to early slaughter.
OUR COMMITMENT is to rehome as many hens as we can into suitable homes, where they can live out the rest of their natural lives.
OUR GOAL is to educate the public about the ethical benefits of buying free range eggs, whilst supporting the work of British farmers. Commercially, all laying hens are slaughtered at the age of 72 weeks, when their production drops slightly. Their carcasses are worth very little and are usually sold for dog food, baby food or cheap, processed pies etc. We work closely with British farmers and purchase the hens from the caged, barn and free range systems, just before their slaughter date.
We rehome hens to a diverse range of individuals wanting hens as pets or companion animals. Hens have begun their new lives in town, city and country gardens, allotments, schools and residential care homes. You don’t need to have a big garden to keep a few hens, they will be grateful for the additional years of freedom you can offer them and reward you with their entertaining antics and probably an egg or two.
To this end, we do not rehome to people wishing to sell them on or for further commercial purposes.
