Did you know that unlike fleas and ticks, intestinal parasites, such as roundworms and tapeworms, can’t be prevented?
Regular de-worming eliminates whatever’s in the system at the time, but it doesn’t provide any long lasting protection. Once the product is eliminated over 24-48hrs, the pet is free to ingest more parasites and become re-infested.
So, how regularly should we be de-worming our pets? Monthly, every 3 months, every 6 months, or perhaps even just once a year? A lot is based on lifestyle and age.
We’re hoping to gain more insight into this question through our collaboration with Idexx, a renowned laboratory, both here in the UK and internationally.
They’ve asked us to take part in a study, to determine the prevelance of intestinal parasites in a cross-section of our patients. This is FREE OF CHARGE, and is running until mid July.
During this time, we’re seeking as many patient 💩 samples as possible, which we shall then submit for analysis.
Following this, we can hopefully provide more patient-specific guidance on the recommended frequency of worming.

Last week’s Star Patient is Teddy, a 4.5 year old Golden Retriever, who had a corn on the cob lodged in his intestines 🌽
He presented with profuse vomiting, inappetence and lethargy, and was admitted for stabilisation and further investigations - this included bloods, fluid therapy and imaging. X-rays revealed dilation of the stomach and small intestines.
Teddy was taken to theatre for an exploratory laparotomy (to examine the organs within the abdomen), which revealed an obstruction in the jejunum (part of the small intestine).
An enterotomy (surgical incision into the intestine) was performed and the foreign body was successfully removed!
Teddy was such a good boy during his stay with us and has made a speedy recovery 🥰
It's business as usual today at CVC! We're open for our registered clients and any emergencies or concerns that they may have about their pets, from 10am to 1pm.
And tomorrow (May Bank Holiday) we're open from 08.30am until 4pm, again for our registered clients only.
And what's more, our weekend and Bank Holiday fees are the same as our standard weekday fees (for our registered clients only).

Adorable little Willow, who was in earlier this week to be spayed.
Just like in dogs, it will soon become law in England to ensure that your cat is microchipped (as of June 10th this year).
So, please contact us to arrange an appointment if your cat isn't yet chipped. This process should be completed before the cat reaches 20 weeks old (5 months).

A very happy ‘big’ birthday to our head nurse, Jenny. She recently reached a significant milestone, and was thoroughly spoiled. She definitely deserved it on account of all her hard work and care, each and every day. ❤️🩹 We won’t tell you her age…🙃
We had another fun-filled puppy party this week, with a slightly less hectic three puppy event. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and learned a few tips and tricks from Jez. It was also our nurse Nadine’s first time at being the face for the practice, so well done to her!

It was a big day yesterday for Mollie, an 11.5 year old Staffordshire bull terrier. She’d been producing (and carrying around!) some very unwanted items for some time.
Check out the X-ray and contents of the kidney dish to find out more.
Fortunately this is quite uncommon, although that doesn’t make it any better for Mollie. Vet Alice did a sterling job with her surgery (cystotomy aka bladder incision, to remove the irritating contents), with student nurse Georgia and RVN Michelle addressing her anaesthetic and recovery needs.
The ‘stone’ will now be sent for analysis, and Mollie with remain on a specialised diet for the foreseeable future, to ensure they don’t recur.
Well done 👏🏻 to all involved, and wishing Mollie a speedy recovery. 🙂

Continued professional development is very important to us. Today we practised CPR (for animals and humans!) as part of our 6 monthly refresher.

Earlier this week that became more of a reality, with vet Suzie spaying her own mother’s bitch, Luna.
Fortunately, Suzie and Luna were unfazed by the procedure, and they both made an uneventful recovery! ❤️🩹

There’s nothing like a rabbit 🐇 ear mite to give you the heebie jeebies! 👹 Fortunately for the rabbit, they can be easily treated. And even more fortunately, they’re not infectious to humans! 😌
And at the strike of 4, she is no more! Wishing Sarah on reception good luck in her new venture with her son. Her time at CVC has sadly come to an end, but new challenges lie ahead. We thank her for all her hard work after 7 years at CVC. It’s been a pleasure. Here’s to her continuing “Living the dream”! 🥰

Tuesday was ferret neuter day at CVC. Hold on to your nose! But you can’t beat their cuteness! Thanks to Bacchus Residents Rescue.
This gorgeous boy, Harry, was in earlier this week. Despite originally being thought to be a crossbreed, this is in fact not the case. Do you know what breed Harry is? Like and comment before you read others’ responses, and we’ll reveal the answer next week!
Where there’s a will, there’s a way…! It’s always a pleasure seeing Frank for his 6-monthly visits. He definitely epitomises living life to the full, and never giving up. Despite all his owners efforts, when Frank had spinal surgery for a ruptured disc a couple of years ago, he didn’t regain the use of his back legs. For some, this might have meant the end of the road. But Frank’s owner didn’t give up, and had a bespoke set of wheels designed to support his needs. These might appear clunky, but Frank manages just fine. He’s not in pain, and all of his personal hygiene needs are also met with the care and dedication from his owner. He lives a full life, even going on hikes in a specially designed back pack (see pics in comments). So, although unlucky in some ways, Frank’s scored big in others. Well done to the pair of them! 👏🏻 🏆
As another year draws to a close, we want to thank all of our clients for supporting and sharing the journey with us in 2022. We are open until 4pm tomorrow (New Year's Eve), and then closed Sunday and Monday. Normal hours shall resume on Tuesday 3rd January 2023.
