Zoo day with an assistance dog? Yes, it’s a thing—and we’ve got the inside scoop from one of our teams! 🐾

Here’s what we learned:
✔️ Plan ahead: Many zoos have special dog-friendly maps to avoid reactive animals like tigers and primates.
✔️ Keep it short: A short weekday visit is a great way to ease into the experience.
✔️ Focus, treat, repeat: Reward your dog for staying focused on you—treats work wonders!

Trips like these aren’t just about fun—they’re about building confidence, independence, and trust. Assistance dogs empower their handlers to explore new places and navigate the world with support by their side. 💙

Have questions about outings with an assistance dog? Drop them below, and we’ll do our best to answer!

💈 Who’s ready for a fresh new look? ✂️🐾

Anook, our ambassador dog, stopped by the salon for a quick trim… or maybe just a little gossip with the barber! 😂 With that fluffy coat, we think he’s going for the ‘windblown majestic’ style.

Anook reminds us that being an ambassador is serious work, but there’s always time for a little fun (and maybe a treat or two)!

Assistance Dog partnerships aren’t one-size-fits-all!

Handlers can be of all ages. With the right support—like parents, siblings, and carers—young handlers can thrive too. Stefan, who is autistic and sometimes non-verbal, has just started his journey with Bear, his Autism Assistance Dog. 🐶✨

Stefan communicates in his own way, using Makaton, pictures, and hand signals. The amazing thing? Bear has been trained to understand non-verbal communication, responding to hand signals instead of spoken commands. This means that even when Stefan finds it hard to speak, Bear will always understand him. 🐾

Let’s give them a big cheer as they start this new adventure together! 💙🐶

❤️ A beautiful moment of trust and independence…

Mathew and his assistance dog Lilly jogged ahead on their way home from school, and this is what mum found when she turned the corner: Mathew and Lilly sitting together, calmly watching a squirrel and patiently waiting for her to cross the road. 🐾

This isn’t just a sweet moment—it’s pure teamwork. With Lilly by his side, Mathew has gained the confidence and independence to take on the world, one step at a time.

Moments like these are the heart of what Autism Assistance Dogs do. They don’t just transform the lives of individuals—they bring trust, love, and a sense of peace to entire families. 💙

🌟 Adapting to Life with an Assistance Dog 🌟

Change can be challenging, especially for an autistic person. But with patience and support, it can lead to incredible growth and newfound independence! 💪🐾

Here’s how one of our handlers beautifully navigated the adaptation period with their assistance dog, Stella:

✨ Trust the Process:
“At first, it felt overwhelming. But hearing from others who had been through it gave me hope. One day, things just clicked – and suddenly, everything felt more natural.”

✨ Building Routine:
“Getting used to the new 'normal' was key. I learned to trust that not every hiccup meant a step back. Over time, things became second nature, and handling Stella felt so much easier.”

✨ Fostering the Bond:
“Our relationship grew stronger each day. Watching Stella help me with tasks or intervene during difficult moments made me realise we’re a team. Her support makes me feel empowered.”

✨ Celebrate Progress:
“Tasks that once felt impossible, like waiting alone in a busy place, are now manageable because of Stella. Every small win builds confidence and excitement for the future.”

🎉 The journey with an assistance dog isn’t always smooth, but the rewards are life-changing. If you’re considering this path, know that it’s okay to take things one step at a time. With patience and love, incredible things can happen. 💖

At the beginning of this month, Anook had an unforgettable day at Buglawton Primary School! 🐕

He joined Andrea, our community fundraiser, to meet the children and show them how the dogs trained by our charity make life easier and happier for autistic people. The kids were full of questions and loved hearing about the incredible ways these dogs bring comfort, confidence, and independence.

We’re honoured to be chosen as Buglawton Primary’s charity of the year. Throughout 2025, the students will get creative by crafting items for our fundraising stalls and supporting us at school events.

We can’t wait to see their amazing ideas come to life! Take a look at these heartwarming snapshots from the visit—pure joy in every moment.

For families in our Programme, dog delivery day is the most anticipated milestone. Recently, Percy, an incredible assistance dog, officially moved in with their handler!

Dog delivery is more than just handing over a leash—it’s about helping the dog settle into their new home, building trust with the handler, and beginning hands-on training to ensure a strong partnership.

The handler shared:
“We joined the program around this time last year, and Percy moved in yesterday. It’s amazing!”

This is the start of a journey filled with independence, support, and companionship. 💙
