Just had a limited number of these arrive today from ones of our local breeders at around 3cm, these have to be among the most desirable bristlenose available.
The L183 Starlight Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a captivating and relatively small species of pleco that is highly regarded in the aquarium trade for its unique appearance and ease of care. A variant of the popular Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus), the L183 is recognized for its stunning, starry pattern and the bristle-like appendages that adorn the male's nose, which become more prominent as they mature.
Appearance:
The L183 Starlight Bristlenose has a dark, almost black body decorated with striking, scattered white or yellowish spots, giving it the "starlight" look from which it derives its name. These spots can vary in size and distribution, creating a beautiful contrast against its dark background. The males typically develop longer and more pronounced bristles on their snouts as they mature, a characteristic feature of the Bristlenose species. Females have shorter bristles and a more streamlined body shape.
Size:
The L183 generally reaches a maximum length of 4–5 inches (10–12 cm), making it an ideal choice for medium-sized aquariums.
Habitat and Care:
Native to the rivers of South America, particularly in areas with slow-moving water and abundant driftwood, the L183 is a peaceful and hardy fish. It requires an aquarium that replicates these natural conditions, with plenty of hiding spots, driftwood, and moderate water flow. It thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5) and a temperature range of 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).
Being a wood-eating species, the L183 relies on driftwood in the aquarium as a primary food source, helping with digestion. In addition to wood, it will accept high-quality sinking algae wafers, vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, and occasional protein-based foods.
Behavior:
The L183 Starlight Bristlenose is generally peaceful and non-territorial, though males may exhibit some aggression toward one another, especially when competing for breeding caves or territories. It can be kept in a community tank with other peaceful species, although it may be more active at night when it feeds and explores.
Conclusion:
The L183 Starlight Bristlenose is a beautiful, low-maintenance pleco that is ideal for aquarists looking to add both a functional algae-eater and a visually striking fish to their aquarium. Its starry pattern, peaceful nature, and relatively small size make it a popular choice for both beginner and experienced aquarium enthusiasts.
