Heading down to go and watch Shania Twain tonight in London and coincidentally Southend Dog Training and Vet on the hill happened to be doing a meet and greet nearby.

I understand not everyone's cup of tea or ideal style of dog training however I think the no bullsh*t approach to dog training (and by that I mean owner training) is what a lot of people need.

I often get asked when can I stop feeding treats to my dog (that's being trained) or people saying I don't want to rely on giving treats.
There is more to it than just giving a treat for that 1 second of good behaviour....

A Dog Trainer/Behaviourist view on a situation.....

Whilst walk my 2 dogs on the beach this morning I came across a lady and her dog who I probably came across a bit rude with.
My 2 were playing ball and minding their own business when a dog wondered over but then once within 10m started barking - not in an agressive way, more in a who are you and what are you doing, can I join in kinda way.

My 2 have the ball and in this situation my thought is that there is about a 60% chance one of mine will tell the dog to back off - because the ball is involved. So I told mine to leave the ball and we walked away from the situation - leaving the ball. Which later on a sent them to get once the dog had moved away.

The lady seemed a bit offended and with the typical comment of 'she only wants to play'. In my head my response 'that's nice. Good for her'

Another reason of my action of moving out of the situation is that one of my dogs is quite impressionable. She will copy and respond based on what other dog is doing and therefore I limit the opportunities where she can pick up on this behaviour. For example in this situation I don't want her thinking she can start barking back at a new dog.

As a dog trainer on a walk I definitely find myself thinking of the 'what if' and preventing any potential issues which may or may not be a concern - sometimes to the annoyance of those walking with me.

The moral of this post is if someone walks away from a situation with their dog or they don't say morning to you because they are focusing on the dog and training please don't be offended. They are likely doing this for their own dogs and their benefit and not because they think your dog is unruley.🐾

Meet Lenny, 4 month old Rottweiler. Had our first session this evening and he was a little star with his leave it work.
Lenny has started to resource guard food so we have started work on a few training tips and techniques to help reduce the likelihood of this becoming a 'thing' as he gets older

"Please could any dog owners with a dog acquired from 1st January 2020, take time to complete an anonymous optional online survey via the link below. It is for a local vet as part of a Masters research project in Clinical Animal Behaviour on the topic of neutering and owner's opinions. It should take around 15 minutes to complete and would be greatly appreciated!"

Some great tips to help with you're recall.
Recall isn't something you teach once and hope your dog remembers. Repetition is key. My dogs are 6yr and 18m and I re-enforce their recall on every walk 🐾

I've been working with Dekka for 6+months. Dekka was terrified of going near the car let alone get in it. This was due to as a puppy he was only going in the car for what he deemed as negative experiences, like going the vets.

We started with Dekka trying to lure him near the car with high value treats, that didn't work. We tried desensitisation work, getting him closer and closer over time with feeding, toys and treats but as soon as we stopped near the car he'd back off.

After lots of thinking about what to do and talking with some other trainer friends, I started to look increasing his 'drive' to get to something with the idea that rather than us taking him to the car he'd lead the way.

He was already very ball focused so in the back garden away from the car we started by placing a stationery ball down, holding him back then counting him down to get the ball. Once he returned with the ball he'd get something he found more rewarding than a ball, in his case its a squeaky toy.
Once he showed excitement for this it was time for his owner to practise this in various locations.
We then moved to the front garden, getting gradually closer to the car.
Months later and we managed to get the ball inside the car!

This has only been possible with the hard work and consistency from his owner.
There is still a long way to go but slow and steady.
