This weeks star pup pupil is Loki the Lurcher/Collie cross. Incredibly nervous of men (former street dog) & by association even male dog behaviourists, the 1st 5 mins of our session was gaining his trust, after all I can't expect a reactive dog to engage with me & feel safe from other dogs if he doesn't trust me fully. Suffice to say he was a star as was his owner & we had a great session. Looking forward to more progress in our next session & putting my client to the test after showing some of the techniques we need.

Today's chien du jour (dog of the day .. ok getting in the spirit of the upcoming Paris Olympics!), is the wonderful Smokey. Some destructive behaviour, attention seeking, separation anxiety, guarding. All very treatable and a very successful session ultimately with happy owners & dog! 🐕

As some dog training I had scheduled for today had to be moved, I spent more time watching & listening to more dog trainers. I love doing this as a trainer you can never be unwilling to listen & learn, you never know a technique from another trainer may be just what's needed with a specific dogs problems. This is what dog training should be like, bespoke solutions & fall back options as what may work for a reactive GSD, may not work for a reactive Daschund, behaviour issues for a Collie won't be fixed the same way as those issues may be fixed with a Cockerpoo.

Sadly dog training & behaviour work is also one of the most conflicted & toxic industries. I actually laughed at the Purely positive scientific trainers ripping up the more traditional trainers & vice versa. These guys are missing a trick, as believe it or not you DON'T have to be polarised and put yourself in one camp or another. In fact new PP methods & proven over years traditional methods can all learn something from one another, some applications I may apply to one dog & something from the other "so called camp" to a different one. However most seem to want to label themselves as one or the other & refute most of what the other genre of trainer has to say. It's about the dog ultimately & what works for him/her rather than adhering to a stylised choice.

Milo, an absolute star yesterday. Milos lovely owner was at her wits end. People crossing the road from her & the two dogs Milo & Bunny due to the crescendo of barking & the lunging etc, Bunny we've previously effectively dealt with individually with great results. For an owner to be anxious & not looking forward to walks goes against everything we do when we get a dog, it should be relaxing & fulfilling. So with my help & her hard work, my client is well on course to changing that dynamic with Milo. Yesterday we had some excellent behaviour & a little reactivity which we worked with and reduced massively. We were just wrapping up & preparing to leave the recreation area & I spied a largish English Bulldog near the closest exit. I wanted to push it one last time before the next session but in honesty thought I was pushing myself & Milo really hard to exit within a few feet of the dog, something I know he's not been able to do without flipping. So deep breath, best trainer energy & front on and let's go. I had doubts personally this would work & was prepared to turn & head for the further exit if needed. However as we approached and Milo looked, I broke the obsession & acceleration, projected myself & my confidence and positive energy, Milo checked in, looked to the Bulldog, checked in ... back & forth and then with great relief fell in step with me & pushed forward, past the dog feet away & looked to me for guidance & leadership. YES! Nailed it Milo you star 🌟 Even the owner was shocked! Next session more of the same with lots of coaching for my client 👍🐕

I love listening to, reading or watching many & varied trainers. Any trainer or behaviourist that says they won't carry on learning & growing is full of crap. I have & do listen to, watch or read Adam Spivey, Will Atherton, Larry Krohn, Cesar Milan (although I disagree with lots of his techniques), Joel Beckman, Tom Davis, Ian Dunbar, Sally Gutteridge, Graeme Hall, Patricia McConnell, Marc Goldberg, Robert Cabral & the monks of new skete plus many others. Any dog trainer that labels themselves as a type & won't listen to trainers outside that style are limiting themselves. As professionals we can always continue learning, growing & improving until the day we cannot carry on.

Me and the wonderful 2 year old Harley the Boxer. Harleys lovely owners told me I was the 3rd trainer they've had for him. One charged multiple times more than Wiggle Waggle and proceeded to choke him to almost unconsciousness & tell them that sniffing on walks was a "privilege". The other told them Harley was "too stubborn" and they could do nothing with him!

Training Harley was a great, rewarding & positive session. Remember it doesn't cost a fortune to make both your own & your dogs life infinitely better.

Anyone looking for good high profile dog trainers to follow, watch & learn from, here's a few I pay attention to. Not saying I agree with everything all these guys do as us dog trainers are notoriously conflicted in techniques & styles, but all of these are generally excellent. Larry Krohn , Southend Dog Training, Robert Cabral, Will Atherton, Upstate Canine Academy (Tom Davis) and some of Joel Beckmans stuff is good. Also an honorary shout out for Graeme Hall / The Dogfather as his delivery style is excellent in laymans terms for Joe Public to easily understand. 👍🐕

What's most important to your fear reactive dog? A piece of yummy chicken?? NO! You are & trusting in and having confidence in their authoritative, calm, confident leader (and benevolent ... yes the chicken can come after your dog doesn't react but not be visible) This is why distraction via treats in this scenario does not fix the problem. 🐕

How not to train lead walking .... but damn funny all the same! 🤣🐕

24/04/2024

Puppy 101. Crate training & sleep. If you have a puppy I recommend strongly that you crate train it ASAP. Young puppies need at least SIXTEEN hours sleep a day. If you're constantly playing with the puppy, presenting toys etc, you're creating a massive problem potentially for later on. A dog you'll come to a behaviourist like myself & say "my dog won't switch off, is hyperactive" etc. You've created a dog addicted to adrenaline with no off switch, these dogs are also susceptible to picking up separation issues. Dogs by & large like the safe space & it's NOT a prison or cruel (am not saying they should be confined endlessly & locked up for hours, no dog should be completely unattended for longer than 4 hours generally, except overnight with owners nearby). However dogs are instinctual den animals.

Ever wanted to try & get some support or help for your dogs behaviour issue, whatever that may be?

One of our clients memorably told me that he almost didn't book with Wiggle Waggle as he thought the quoted price was TOO CHEAP. After amazing results & improvements with his dogs reactivity I was informed the previous trainer had been unsuccessful plus had charged double AND a consultation fee!

At Wiggle Waggle we have helped many clients with just a half hour telephone or zoom consultation for as little as £15. That won't take much out of your pocket or your schedule & could make a huge difference to your beloved pet. Personal visits & one to ones from as little as £40 (based on distance). Call Graham our Dog Behaviour Expert on 07825 171319 now.

Great session today with the lovely Maddie & her wonderful owners. Maddie a strong 3 year old Golden Retriever has always pulled hard on the lead & with her owners having had a few issues medically it was imperative to get Maddie walking nicely & for everyone to start enjoying walks. So after a nice chat, some advice & implementation of training techniques we were delighted with immediate improvements. This clip was around 40 minutes into our 1st session & Maddie is loose lead walking for the first time ever. Well done all, you absolutely smashed it today! (Especially you Maddie) 👍🐕

Lead Walking, Reactivity & Recall.

Are walks with your dog not a pleasurable experience? Do they take YOU for a walk and pull you down the road?

Are they reactive to other dogs or even traffic, lunging out into the road towards vehicles? Phobias make certain environments a nightmare to walk in maybe?

Do you long to allow your dog off lead but cannot as their recall is less than perfect?

There's some common ground across these issues and all benefit from enhanced focus, engagement & communication with your dog amongst other techniques.

Contact Wiggle Waggle now for this or any other training or behaviour issues. Call 07825 171319 message via Facebook or our website for 5 star rated, experienced help & advice.
