Mark McFarland from Lallemand brought his collegue Bruno to give Parklands clients a talk on finishing beef cattle and Wayne Acheson of Foyle meats kindly agreed to host the meeting at his farm. The talk and discussions were very good and the main points are summarised below:
One clean water bowl/trough per 10 cattle, ideally 2 bowls per pen each with a minimum flow rate of 0.7 litres per minute.
5m squared floor area per heavy bullock is recommended.
Free access to salt licks increases water intake and salivation keeping stomach healthy.
Roughage like staw should be chopped to max 1 inch and preferably closer to 1 cm to encourage chewing the cud!
Minimum of 30cm of feed space per animal, the more space they have (ideally 90cm each) means better intakes and less stress !
Lower group size is better for stress, 20 cattle or more will tend to reduce intakes, 10 cattle is better.
Good quality diet with minimum heating is important to maximise intakes and minimise rumen acidosis

Signs of acidosis are:
Loose faeces and straining as the a**s is irritated.
Laminitis characterised by lameness/stiffness, reddened feet and high incidence of fouls.
Increased vocalisation/roaring.
Reduced feed intakes
Mild to severe bloating.

If you have any queries about these topics please contact a Parklands vet.

NEW BVD TAG RULES

Following the reporting in the press at the weekend we would like to draw peoples attention to the new BVD rules, see below taken from the DAERA website.

BVD Positive and BVD Inconclusive herd restrictions:

Herds in which one or more animal has tested BVD positive (BVDP) or inconclusive (BVDI) will be restricted following a ‘grace period’, which will reduce from 28 days to zero days as follows:

-From 01/02/2025 to 30/04/2025, herd restrictions will be applied 28 days after a positive or inconclusive BVD virus test result;
-From 01/05/2025 to 31/01/2026, herd restrictions will be applied seven days after a positive or inconclusive BVD virus test result;
-From 01/02/2026, herd restrictions will be applied immediately when an animal has a positive or inconclusive BVD virus test result.

During the first 12 months, herd restrictions can be avoided if all BVDP or BVDI animals are culled, or re-tested with a negative result, before the end of the ‘grace period’.

Herd restrictions will prohibit all moves into the herd, and all moves out except to direct slaughter. In exceptional cases, DAERA may allow moves in or out under licence.

BVD Unknown status herd restrictions:

Movement restrictions will be applied to herds with animals of unknown BVD status (BVDU).

Restrictions will initially apply to only the most non-compliant herds, with the tolerance threshold reducing over a 12-month period as follows:

-From 01/06/2025 to 30/11/2025, herd restrictions will be applied to any herd with 20 or more BVDUs >30 days old.
-From 01/12/2025 to 31/05/2026, herd restrictions will be applied to any herd with 10 or more BVDUs >30 days old.
-From 01/06/2026, herd restrictions will be applied to any herd with 5 or more BVDUs >30 days old.

Time to make a teaser at Parklands.

Did you know that there are many benefits of a teaser. Teasers can help to tighten the lambing period, encourage ewes to come into season a week or 2 earlier than they may otherwise have and is ideal for getting first time ewes to start cycling ready for tupping. It can also help boost scanning percentages in some cases.

What ram to choose to make into a teaser? A ram lamb, ideally 8-9 months old. Any breed is perfectly acceptable however, if you are planning on lambing early (out of season) then an early breeding breed such as Dorset, etc. is preferred. They can be used as a ram lamb however a shearling ram will have a higher libido.

Once you have your teaser made simply wait 4-6 weeks before placing them in with the ewes for 14 days before removing and putting your tups in.

Call in and book a slot to get yourself a teaser made at Parklands.
