Meet Missy, our lovely 13-year-old Beagle! 🐾

Missy recently came in to have some lumps removed from her foot, along with a dental procedure. She took everything in her stride and has recovered remarkably well from her anaesthetic.

We're delighted to see that she's already back enjoying her favourite places and getting plenty of well-earned rest and cuddles at home. ❤️

We love receiving updates and photos of our happy patients after their procedures – seeing them back to their normal selves is one of the best parts of our job!

🐾 FOUND CAT 🐾

A young black-and-white female cat, approximately 5–6 months old, was found near Thakeham Primary School yesterday.

She has been safely handed in and checked for a microchip, but unfortunately she is not microchipped.

🐾 Meet Moby, the sweetest Chihuahua! 🐾

Here he is with our Registered Veterinary Nurse, Louisa, having a pre-operative ECG before his castration procedure.

At our practice, every general anaesthetic is carefully tailored to each patient's individual needs, taking into account their age, health status and any pre-existing conditions. Before anaesthesia, our vets and nurses carry out thorough assessments to help ensure the safest possible care.

For some patients, particularly those over 7 years of age, your vet may also recommend pre-anaesthetic blood tests. These tests can help identify any underlying health issues, assess how well vital organs such as the liver and kidneys are functioning, and evaluate blood cell counts. Checking red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets can help detect problems such as anaemia, infection, inflammation or clotting abnormalities before a procedure, allowing us to tailor the anaesthetic plan even more carefully.

Moby was a superstar during his day with us and received plenty of cuddles from the team throughout his visit! ❤️🐶

☀️Supporting Cats with Kidney disease during hot weather☀️

Cats with kidney disease lose the ability to concentrate their urine properly, meaning they pass more water than healthy cats. This makes them much more prone to dehydration — especially during hot weather.

Dehydration can make cats feel lethargic, reduce appetite, worsen nausea and place extra strain on the kidneys. Keeping your cat well hydrated helps support kidney function, comfort and overall wellbeing.

Small changes at home can make a big difference:
💧 Provide multiple fresh water bowls around the house. Cats may prefer drinking from a cat water fountain.
🍽️ Feed wet food to help increase fluid intake
🧊 Add ice cubes or chilled water to encourage drinking
🌬️ Keep your cat cool with shaded areas and good airflow
☀️Supportive products such as Oralade Advanced RF+ can help encourage fluid intake while providing essential electrolytes and nutritional support for cats with renal disease. We stock this in practice, pop in or get in touch if you would like a bottle for your cat.
🛏️ Offer cool resting spots such as tiled floors or cooling mats
🐱 Monitor appetite, energy levels and litter tray habits closely
🚫 Avoid stressful travel or overheating during the hottest parts of the day

If you notice vomiting, reduced appetite, weakness or increased lethargy, contact your vet.

The lovely Alvinette had a nurse blood pressure clinic to check for signs of hypertension🐾

She was incredibly chilled about the whole situation — calmly sitting through her blood pressure check like it was just another part of her day 💖

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is often called a “silent condition” because many cats don’t show obvious signs early on. It’s most commonly seen in older cats and is frequently linked to underlying issues like kidney disease or hyperthyroidism.

Over time, untreated high blood pressure can damage delicate blood vessels around the body. One of the most noticeable effects can be sudden vision problems or even blindness due to retinal damage. It can also affect the heart, brain, and kidneys, making existing conditions worse.

Some signs to watch for include:
• Sudden changes in vision (bumping into things, dilated pupils)
• Behaviour changes (confusion, restlessness)
• Loss of appetite or weight
• Increased thirst or urination

The good news is that it’s relatively easy for your vet to check, and if caught early, it can often be managed with medication and regular monitoring.

Alvinette took it all in her stride and is now back to her usual routine — completely unbothered and probably wondering what all the fuss was about 🐱👑

Important Update for Pet Travel ✈️

From 22nd April 2026, EU pet passports will no longer be valid for travel from the UK to the EU if your main residence is in the UK. Previously, pets with a valid EU pet passport could travel freely between the UK and EU countries, however, under APHA’s new regulations, EU pet passports will no longer be accepted for UK residents.

If you’re planning to travel with your pet, you will now need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate from an ‘Official Veterinarian’ (OV) for every trip. These certificates are valid for entry into the EU within 10 days of issue.

Please note:
• Your pet must have a current rabies vaccination
• If the rabies vaccine is not up to date, a 21-day waiting period is required after the vaccination has been given before an Animal Health Certificate can be issued

The cost of an Animal Health Certificate at Meadow Hall Vets is £145 for a single animal, plus £45 per additional animal.

🐾 Meet the lovely Simba 🐾

Simba recently came in to see our vet Sophie for a routine health check. During Simba’s examination, Sophie suspected he may have a Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesion (FORL) — a common but very painful dental condition in cats where the tooth structure slowly breaks down. Unfortunately, these lesions can be extremely difficult to detect with the naked eye alone, and many cats show very subtle signs at home.

Simba was then booked in for a dental procedure under general anaesthetic so that we could take dental X-rays and remove the affected tooth if required.

Once Simba was safely under anaesthetic, we performed full-mouth dental radiographs, which confirmed a resorptive lesion affecting one of his teeth. Dental X-rays allow us to:
✔️ Identify hidden dental disease below the gumline
✔️ Assess tooth roots before extraction
✔️ Detect additional affected teeth not visible clinically
✔️ Ensure complete removal of diseased roots

Simba’s affected tooth was carefully removed, and he recovered smoothly from his procedure. Most importantly — his source of pain is now gone, and he’s already feeling much more comfortable.

Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, and dental disease is one of the most common yet overlooked causes of chronic pain.

Well done, Simba — you were a superstar throughout your visit 💙🐱
