Just a reminder that there is no safe amount of time to leave pets alone in a car during the hot weather even with the windows open!🌡️

Did you know that on a 22°C day it can reach 47°C inside your car in an hour. At 26°C outside it can reach 37°C in just 10 minutes. Dogs can't regulate their temperature in the same way as us which puts them at greater risk of heat stroke. 🐾

Let's keep our pets safe in the hot weather. 🔥

Is it possible Summer may finally be here? We don’t want to tempt fate, but we thought we would share a few tips to ensure your pet’s safety during the summer months! ☀️

🐾 Consider walking your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler.

🐾 Avoid vigorous exercise such as chasing a ball.

🐾 Bring plenty of water with you when you are out and about to keep your dog hydrated and take regular breaks in the shade to let them cool down.

🐾 Do not leave pets in your car, even with a window open.

🐾 Freeze some treats or set up a paddling pool in your garden!

🐾 Some cats and dogs, particularly those with lighter-coloured or finer fur may benefit from pet-appropriate sun cream.

🐾 Be mindful of bunnies and other small pets, ensure they are able to escape the heat by providing plenty of shade, ventilation and breeze.

🐾Flystrike is a life-threatening risk for rabbits and guinea pigs in the warmer months, check their bottoms twice daily to ensure that they are clean and to spot early signs. Speak to your vet for advice on how to reduce the risks of flystrike.

🐾 Spare a thought for our wildlife – keep shallow bowls of water available in your garden!

Watch out for the signs of heatstroke: Faster, heavier breathing, Excessive thirst and drooling, Increased heart rate, dark coloured gums/ tongue (red/purple), Glassy eyes, Staggering or weakness, Seizures, Unconsciousness.

If you think your pet may have heat stroke, call your vet immediately and follow their instructions.

Meet the beautiful Maple! 🍁

Maple came in to have a grass seed removed from her paw, and is feeling much better! 💚

Grass seeds are common at this time of year, so it’s always worth giving your pet a quick check over when you get home from a walk. Check their ears, feet and long fur and remove any grass seeds that are visible on the fur.

Please do make an appointment to see us if you notice your dog doing any of the following:
• Limping
• Licking their feet
• Has a swelling between the toes
• Scratching their ears
• Sneezing lots
• Has nosebleeds

Grass seed season is truly upon us! 🌾

This is the beautiful Nettle, Nettle has been having lots of fun zooming around in the grass and managed to get some pesky grass seeds stuck in her eyes. The most common areas we find grass seeds are in ears and feet however they can get themselves into many other tricky places!

Our vet Julia carefully removed 4 grass seeds from nettles eyes.

We hope you feel a lot better Nettle! 💚🐾

Meet Tilly, our receptionist and nursing assistant Abi's lovely girl! 🐾

Tilly came in for some X-rays to investigate the spinal pain she has been experiencing. Tilly's X-rays show signs of mild Osteoarthritis so our vet Julia has recommended that she start monthly injections to help manage her pain. Tilly is feeling a lot more comfortable now!

Can you spot anything unusual in this X-ray? 🩻

🐾Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month🐾

Meet Saoirse, our student vet nurse!

"I started working at Meadow Hall veterinary practice in January 2023 as an animal nursing assistant before beginning my veterinary nurse training in September 2023.

As part of my 3 year course, I study 1 day a week at Plumpton College and work full time in practice for the rest of the week with guidance and teaching from our RVNs and vets.

I love my role as a student veterinary nurse at Meadow Hall Vets because I learn something new every day and find it so rewarding getting to know and help our patients and their owners." 🐾💚

If you would like to know more about training to be a veterinary nurse, there is lots of information on the BVNA website:

Meet Murphy, our Nurse Lou's cat! He's been making himself very comfortable in our new 'cat condos'.

Murphy came into us after being attacked. He was covered in scratches but luckily none of them needed stitches so our vet Charlie has sent him home to recover with some pain relief and antibiotics!

Wishing you a speedy recovery Murphy 💚

🐾Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month🐾

Today we caught up with Laura, one of our RVNs at Meadow Hall Vets to have a chat about veterinary nursing!

🐾 What is your favorite part about being a veterinary nurse?

Getting to know my patients and their owners. Being able to make a difference by making a patient's experience at the vets as positive and comfortable as it can be.

🐾 How long have you been qualified as an RVN and what route did you take with your training?

I've been qualified for 16 years and worked in practice for over 20! I carried out my training one day a week at Plumpton College over 2 years whilst working full time in a Veterinary Hospital

🐾 What advice would you give to someone interested in training as a veterinary nurse?

Get as much work experience as possible. It is not the easiest industry to get into, so you may need to contact many different potential employers in all aspects of animal care (groomers, animal charities, dog walkers, vets etc) in order to get a placement.

🐾 Have you done any additional training or courses to support your role as a veterinary nurse?

I have a particular interest in the management of Canine Arthritis (which I am currently undertaking a course in).
I also enjoy nurse clinics, anaesthesia, and radiography. Overall, veterinary nursing is a very rewarding vocation

🐾🥽Laser therapy🥽🐾

Laser therapy uses focused light to stimulate cell regeneration and reduce pain and inflammation. Laser therapy is a safe and gentle non-invasive option to treat a variety of conditions.

If you are interested in laser therapy for your pet, give us a call to chat with our reception team!

🩺 Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 🐾

We had a chat with Louisa, one of our RVNs at Meadow Hall Vets about vet nursing!

🐾 What is your favorite part about being a veterinary nurse?

Working as part of a team to deliver great care to our patients and clients . For me there is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone's pet feel better and go home with a new lease of life. I also have a keen interest in dental care and dentistry, as well as wound care and anaesthesia.

🐾 How long have you been qualified as an RVN and what route did you take with your training?

Ive been in practice for 14 years and am coming up for 9 years qualified . I trained in a practice in Guernsey -Channel Isles and to complete my qualification I had to travel to Myerscough College in Preston frequently for 2 weeks at a time - I spent 2 years completing my diploma.

🐾 What advice would you give to someone interested in training as a veterinary nurse?

Its a very rewarding vocation should you choose this path - its not an easy road but when you qualify its the best feeling in the world - to be able to share your knowledge with clients and colleagues alike - after all everyday is a learning day!

🐾 Have you done any additional training or courses to support your role as an veterinary nurse?

As with all qualified vets and nurses we undertake a certain amount of training throughout the year to maintain our place on the register - this can be in the form of many things, commonly reading journals, online courses, further qualifications, conferences and webinars.
I have undertaken the British Veterinary Nursing Association Oral (Dentistry) Care Course and upon completion was selected to attend a course in dentistry at one of the biggest pet food manufacturers in the UK . A wonderful experience.

I would someday like to complete a further qualification in medical nursing.

Welcome to Meadow Hall Vets!

We’re an independent, small animal veterinary practice in Thakeham with plenty of free parking.

We’re a small, experienced and friendly team so you’ll always have continuity with your pets care.

Our facilities include an operating theatre, dental suite, separate x-ray room and an in-house laboratory.

We know that some pets find a trip to the vets stressful so we’ve created separate cat and dog zones throughout the practice.
