We hope you are looking forward to Halloween! Here are some of our top tips to help keep your pets out of mischief this year! 🐾

🎃 Keep chocolate and other treats out of paws’ reach - chocolate is poisonous to pets as it contains a toxic chemical called theobromine. Even a small amount of chocolate can be fatal. Sweets can also be dangerous if they contain the sweetener xylitol.

🎃 Move candle-lit pumpkins away from pets!

🎃 Be mindful if you are planning on dressing your pets in scary costumes, this can make some pets feel stressed and uncomfortable.

🎃 Loud fireworks and Halloween parties can be stressful for pets, help them feel secure by making them a den in a quiet corner away from the noise.

🎃 Take dogs for their walks before dark.

🎃 Encourage cats to come home earlier by moving their dinner time to before it gets dark outside.

With all the wet weather we have had recently and autumn arriving lots of wild mushrooms have been popping up! Mushrooms are very important to our environment and should be left alone to grow if possible. 🍄

Some wild mushrooms are edible but many can be dangerous if ingested by pets. Its best to leave the fungi identification to the experts rather than curious noses! 🐶

If your pet eats a wild mushroom it could make them very unwell. Some types may only cause a mild stomach upset, whilst others can be deadly. Some can cause toxic effects in minutes, while others may take days or, in rare instances, weeks to come on.

If your dog does eat a wild mushroom:
🐾 Call your vet immediately
🐾 If possible, bring along a photo, or ideally a sample of the mushroom
🐾 Take note of the area where the mushroom was found e.g. was it growing in grass or on a tree stump etc. Knowing where it grew can help our vets to identify what mushroom it was.

Chester popped in to see vet Sophie today for a monthly joint injection. He was celebrating his birthday in Salmon Paste and was more than happy to pose for the camera so we could all admire how handsome he is! He then popped next door to Meadows Cafe & Store for a special doggie ice cream to mark the occasion.

Please wish Chester a very Happy Birthday!

With events such as Halloween, Bonfire Night and Diwali coming up, make sure you prepare early to keep your pet calm and safe during the firework season! 🎆

Here are some tips:

🐾Make a safe space:
Set up a private, cosy area with your pets favourite toys, blankets and even a piece of clothing which smells like you. Your pet can retreat here during fireworks.

🐾Keep calm: Close the curtains to block out flashes and play calming music or turn on the TV to help drown out the noise. Staying calm and acting normally will help soothe your pet.

🐾Try calming products: Pheromone diffusers and calming supplements may be a good option for your pet, speak with your vet to find out if your pet may benefit from calming products.

🐾Ensure your pet's microchip details are up to date.

🐾Keep your pets indoors: Close all doors and windows during fireworks to keep your pet safe. Take your dog for a walk earlier in the day before the fireworks start.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with our team. 💚

Welcome to Meadow Hall Vets!

We’re an independent, small animal veterinary practice in Thakeham with plenty of free parking.

We’re a small, experienced and friendly team so you’ll always have continuity with your pets care.

Our facilities include an operating theatre, dental suite, separate x-ray room and an in-house laboratory.

We know that some pets find a trip to the vets stressful so we’ve created separate cat and dog zones throughout the practice.
