Today is National Hedgehog Day! 🦔 We have put together our top five tips to take care of our small and spiky garden friends...

1. Providing Shelters

You can create a safe space for hibernating hedgehogs with natural resources! A log or leaf pile can provide a cosy hideout. Or if you have the space, why not devote a corner of your garden to letting wildlife grow to create a natural den. You can also purchase ready built hedgehog hotels from most of our stores!

2. Hedgehog Highways

Hedgehogs travel at night between gardens. You can provide a safe Hedgehog Highway by creating a gap at the bottom of boundary fences. This allows Hedgehogs to roam freely between habitats without getting stuck in one place.

3. Safety Checks

Make sure to check for Hedgehogs when clearing your garden. This includes checking bonfire piles before lighting, long grass before mowing/strimming and leaf piles before raking.

4. Covering drains

Garden drains can pose a serious risk to Hedgehogs if left uncovered. You can close any open drains with a cover that won’t allow for Hedgehogs to fall through and get stuck whilst still allowing water through.

5. Feed & Water Stations

You can help supplement a Hedgehog’s diet by providing fresh food and water stations. Hedgehog food is available to buy from us at Gladwells Pet & Country Store.

Cheryl takes on the London Marathon! 🏃‍♀️

In 2025, Gladwells Pet & Country Store Stowmarket Store Manager Cheryl will be running the London Marathon in aid of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

Battersea is an animal rescue centre for dogs and cats. Battersea help rescue dogs and cats until their owner or a new one can be found. It is one of the UK's oldest and best known animal rescue centres.

We are very proud that Cheryl will be flying the flag for Gladwells in the London Marathon and wish her the very best with her training and fundraising.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is happening 24th-26th January! 🐦

Wild birds can be spotted in many of our gardens and Winter is an important time for lending struggling birds a helping hand. Here are four tips from Gladwells Pet & Country Store to get your garden bird-spotting ready this Winter...

🥜 Replenish bird feeders with high quality feed. We have a wide range of seed mixes, nuts and suet for wild birds in our stores and online.

🧼 Keep feeders and bird baths clean regularly to avoid contamination to protect other birds and yourself. Always use gloves when cleaning.

💦 Create a water supply for thirsty birds. In Winter ice can cause issues with wild birds accessing their regular water sources. You can leave out a small bath of water which is topped up daily with slightly warm water to provide a quick drink.

🏠 Place bird boxes in your garden to provide nest spaces to shelter birds in Winter. Try to aim for quiet spots which can't be easily reached by predators such as cats.

January is national walk your dog month! 🐶 Here are 4 top tips from us at Gladwells Pet & Country Store...

🐾 If weather turns icy or you even see some snow, keep dogs on a lead at all times to keep them safe. Snow can hide a number of dangers if you're not familiar with the area.

🐾 Make sure your dog's collar has identification tags attached and is microchipped with the correct contact information in case you get separated.

🐾 Winter usually means shorter and colder walks which don't leave as much time for exploring and adventure. Try adding some simple treat based training on your walks to keep pets busy even on nearby pathways.

🐾 Remember to dress your dog, and yourself, in plenty of visible clothing and accessories so that you can be seen when walking in the dark. Hi vis coats and light up tags are great for this, but only use what your pet is comfortable with to avoid distress.
