I was a store manager in food retail from 2002 until 2021 when I decided my home life was more important than my career and I wanted to spend more time with my beautiful children. My husband and I have owned a laundry business since 2011 so I help with this as well as volunteering in the rabbit area at NANNA small animal rescue several times a week. Since I was knee high to a grasshopper, I have h

ad a house and garden full of a variety of pets, but always having rabbits through the years, being the pet, I absolutely cannot live without! Since I can remember my dream has been to either start up a rescue for rabbits or start boarding, so here we are.... Imperial Bunny Boarding.

Bonding day 2.
Well praise the lord that today has been calmer than yesterday with these two monkeys! They haven't battered each other since before midnight last night! 🫣
They've tolerated each other today and have been eating without going wild! (Scatter feeds)
After a turbulent start they're both wary of each other so to observe grooming from both tonight is excellent!
Phoebe was absolutely acting like a looney through fear yesterday, Pippin is great at reassuring her but also letting her know her place.

Bonding....day 3 has been very calm, lots of laying together and eating peacefully out of the same "pile".
We've had a quick sweep of the pen to clear the floor, added in a litter box for bunnies to share and a bowl of food.
Another pen panel has been added.
The observation of behaviour is so important at each step. Some bonds these steps are done one item every 2nd day, others you can push a little more.

It’s a well-known narrative that rabbits can live just as contented and fulfilled a life singly as they can with a friend of their own kind.

And unfortunately it’s this narrative that leads to so many rabbits - 42% in the UK - living by themselves without a key welfare need being met.

Rabbits are incredibly social animals who thrive on being able to spend time, talk to (in their own language) and interact with a bonded friend or friends. As crepuscular animals, most active dusk and dawn, we’re often asleep when they’re up and about, and we also have life commitments that prevent us from snuggling up with them every day for hours when it’s nap time.

Rabbits are prey animals, they find being removed from their home environment for vet trips, boarding facilities, health checks and the like stressful and scary - and studies have shown that having a friend to accompany them through experiences like this lowers their cortisol and helps them settle and relax far quicker. From a rescue point of view, we have always seen pairs and groups of rabbits adjust to boarding far faster than single rabbits who are left to navigate a foreign environment on their own, without a support buddy.

One of the five freedoms (which are the animal version of human rights), is to afford rabbits the right to be with their own kind, rather than isolate them. Seeing bonded rabbits together will leave any guardian with no doubt that it is the best thing for their rabbit’s health, welfare and wellbeing.

No amount of human interaction can replace the value and importance of rabbits having a friend or friends of their own kind; studies have shown that rabbits value companionship as much as they do food - and as guardians it is our responsibility to ensure our rabbits live as happy, comfortable, healthy and fulfilled a life as possible.

Find your single rabbit a friend today - and always adopt, don’t shop.

Ronnie (white m) and Pepper (ginger F).
Bonding day 1.
She's a rescue that is acting as if she hasn't met another bunny before. Overly excited by the whole situation she has decided lots of hu***ng and chasing is what's she's gonna do!!
Ronnie recently lost his partner and has been incredibly patient with his new madame! He's shown her there's nothing to be scared of and has even been grooming her a little.
By this evening we have quite a calm bonding pen!
These are going to be a solid bond. πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ’

This lovely pair have just been bonded by Amy at Imperial Bunny Boarding. The female bunny ( fawn & black) was adopted from us 5 years ago to live with their neutered male but sadly he passed away, leaving her on her own but a new male bunny got adopted and don't they look lovely together. Thank you to both Amy and the bunnies owner for allowing us to share this.

If you need some assistance with bonding bunnies as maybe it's too stressful just the thought of it or maybe you have tried and all they do is fight then please get in touch with Amy at Imperial Bunny Boarding on the below link - https://www.facebook.com/share/1AhEodm9yb/

Here are the positives of having a bonded pair -

It's natural for them to have their own company

Communication between the two bunnies aids mental stimulation

They feel safe and secure

Encourages more hay eating

Grooming helps prevent mental and physical issues.

Constant company especially on a cold rainy day

Bonded pairs should always be neutered

Once bonded they should never be split otherwise a bond can break down. Always take them together even if one is having an operation. It has been proven they recover better.
