Just to remind people, especially those that are new to ordering from me or only order once a month or less to let me know what you want by Sunday so I can get it in ready for delivery that week otherwise you won’t have it until the week after.

If your ordering the same feed regularly I do then keep that item in stock so you don’t need to worry πŸ™‚

Just an example: I stock 29 different chaff options, these are chaff’s that I hold in stock all the time. There are well over 100 different options available, I don’t have the room to stock everything sadly

So I place my feed order every Monday morning, it’s delivered to me the following day (Tuesday) and then delivered to you that week as long as my suppliers have it in stock

This is something I do badger on about but it’s so important. I promise I will never try and sell you feed you don’t need, in fact I go out of my way to deter you buying feed that I feel you dont need which in turn looses me money but I promise I do it with your horses best interest at heart.

I do promote balancers or vitamin & Mineral supplements over other supplements as unless you are feeding your horse a balanced diet it will make feeding for issues such as weight gain, weight loss, metabolic conditions, respiratory conditions, digestive, hoof (the list goes on) impossible as the basics aren’t there sadly

If you change anything this year with your equine management please rethink your worming program. I still know many who just worm every 3 months, they have no idea if their horse needs worming it’s just a thing they do but please stop and think what the consequences are.

Just to prove this, I have not had to worm my boy once this year, good field maintenance has prevented me from putting chemicals into him so how many times have you wormed unnecessarily and but every equine at risk

Just stop next time you just worm and think β€œdoes my horse really need this?πŸ€·β€β™€οΈβ€ just do that 1 sample, it’s so simple and could save what could end up being catastrophic for the future of all equines 😞

New guidelines on equine worm control have been launched – with the warning: β€œIf horse owners don’t make these changes now, it will be too late.” Cross-sector group CANTER (Controlling Antiparasitic resistance in Equines Responsibly), has published a β€œcrucial” document setting out key pr...

I can’t stress this enough. I promise it’s not me wanting you to spend more it’s actually me wanting you to spend less and I regularly do myself out of sales when customers ask my advice about what they’re feeding.

If you’re using 1 bag of compound feed per month for a 15’2 horse I can guarantee you are not feeding it at its recommended daily amount.

If your horse is a good weight then yes cut back on the hard feed (compound feed) but ensure you supplement it with a balancer or a vitamin & mineral powder.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/7o2GcScSocRKBBJ4/?mibextid=WC7FNe

Friday focus…recommended feed amounts!

I have covered this before, but I am going to again as it seems very common that feeding rates are not adhered to or that they are misunderstood.

If you are feeding a feed balancer, which is commonly fed at 100g per 100kgs of bodyweight, this means that a 600g horse would need 600g per day to get a balanced diet. There are some variations to the 100g per 100kgs of bodyweight (such at 200g per 100kgs of bodyweight), but check the feeding rate on the bag to ensure you provide your horse with the right amounts of your chosen product.

If you are feeding a coarse mix, cube or chaff (with added vits & mins), the feeding rates are much higher, so your 600kg horse would need around 3-4kgs to get a balanced diet. Again, please check the feeding rate on the bag as they will differ! This will often over supply calories for many good doers, so you would be better feeding a balancer or vitamin and mineral supplement to the types that are prone to weight gain. Similarly, a horse that struggles to maintain weight would be better with a mix or cube with a higher feeding rate, than they would with a balancer as they need the extra calories.

Carrier type products, such as chaffs, beets and mashes (that are not fortified with vits and mins) can be fed in smaller amounts, it’s the feeding rates to provide nutrients from the vitamin & mineral supplements, balancers and compound feeds that are the most important element of the diet.

Feeding rates are not there to make you feed more and spend more money, they are there to ensure that your horse or pony is getting the nutrients he or she needs. Not feeding chosen feeds at the recommended amounts is very common and it is one of the main reasons a balanced diet is not supplied.

Are your wood pellets not working as you had hoped?

I’ve had a few customers ask me about more absorbent bedding as the wood pellets they are using just aren’t soaking up the wet.

When asked what brands they were using it was all unbranded white bag pellets.

So the question is are they ok for bedding horses and are they safe?????

First off these are not certified so in theory you have no idea what wood is in them as they are meant for burning so you do have to think, is it safe? The answer is we don’t know πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

The reason they’re not absorbing the wet is because there likely to be hardwood, hardwood isn’t as absorbent not when comparing them to a softwood pellet hence why wood savings are always made of softwood.

So in my opinion, yes unbranded pellets are cheaper but I feel they are false economy as you will most likely use more than a softwood pellet made for the job of bedding and not fuel so it’s worth thinking about when next purchasing your wood pellets

Weight Loss queries:

Just a reminder on those horses that loose weight every winter

Changes in grazing and their coats means less calories going in and more being used so it’s paramount you start to support those changes now else weight will drop off.

Step 1) Forage should now be given, even if still out at grass. Start to bring in every day even for a short time to get some good quality forage into them.

Also if your horse has been living out start to adapt them back into stabled life especially if they are stressy about coming in. This won’t help with weight gain, start adjusting them slowly.

Step 2) start adding in a balancer or vitamin & Mineral supplement. They will very quickly loose whatever vits & Mins they have managed to get from the grass so now it’s time to bring them up to optimal levels.

Step 3:
Start feeding your chosen compound feed, introduce gradually and build up to the full recommended daily amount

🚩 don’t forget to weigh it out, if your not feeding the recommended daily amount carry on with the balancer

Step 4:
If needed look at micronised linseed or Omega Rice both high in oil and will really help with weight maintenance

Chaff: use to bulk out feed but don’t over feed it prioritise the above

I get asked about Calming supplements a lot especially around this time of year.

While I’m not against trying a supplement and some say calming supplements have worked I however rarely recommend any as I’m pretty science driven and none are proven and in many occasions without trying to offend it’s usually down to the lifestyle of the horse, whether it’s pain related/health issues, housing isn’t suitable, lack of basic training, just being young and needing life miles, relationship breakdown and lots more but if your having to supplement to calm a horse I would always advise to look at other potential causes before going down a none proven method of supplementing.

Ps, as always I’m open to others opinions and I’m not wanting to offend πŸ˜€

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/dZ8A5sgyW2i8SjW3/?mibextid=WC7FNe

What do we really know about calming supplements or biologics? How do they work to "calm" a horse? Or do they simply dull a horse. Many claim to be harmless because they are "organic". There are lots of organic plants and leaves from trees that will make a horse mildly ill and dull. Could some of these work by making a horse's mind and body dull with mild indigestion? Horses have fragile digestive tracts. And BTW, ethanol, formaldehyde and crude oil are organic compounds.

I think anything ingested by a horse that diminishes their situational awareness can be dangerous to both the horse and the rider, especially if it dulls a horse's response time. You might jump in an arena with deep footing and your horse could land oddly, then stumble away from the jump. Do you want your horse to be dulled down in that moment? The stumble could end in a fall if your horse's reaction time is slowed, and the fall could cause serious injury.

These "supplements", that act as drugs to calm/dull your horse, could be evidence that you are denying the reality of an incomplete or dysfunctional relationship with your horse. If you are giving these medications to your horse, it is important to ask why? Questioning "why" includes determining if the reason for their use is you not your horse. Are you using them because you are afraid? Do you lack the skill or fitness to ride your horse? Are you diminishing your horse's awareness and response times to bring your horse down to the level of your riding ability? If any of the answers are yes, then you are probably addressing your challenges by chemically altering your horse's behavior when the issue is with you, not with your horse.

If you cannot ride, control or be safe without drugging your horse's mind and body into dullness, you are acting dangerously even if those around you tell you it's OK. It's not OK. It's wrong because it violates a basic rule of horse training that says, if you try to purchase a training solution to a problem with a horse, you will fail. Buying a different bit or other equipment, giving "calming" substances, or doing anything besides working to improve your skills and your horse's skills is pointless. There are no shortcuts in horsemanship.

When I did an internet search for equine claiming agents, I was shocked to find that there are hundreds of these calming "supplements" out there. I believe that this is more evidence that horsemanship standards are at a new low.

CPL have you heard of it?

Chronic Progressive Lymphoedema

Does your horse have feathers? Doesn’t need to be heavy feather either so it’s getting more common in breeds like friesian’s as well as Dutch, Clyde’s etc

Is is a progressive disease, it cannot be cured but it can be managed.

Priorities are:

- Movement: Turnout and exercise is crucial
- Ensuring the area is kept clean and moisturised
- Avoid bedding that harbours things like mites
- manage mud fever
- Diet must be managed, low sugar, starch & protein so avoid things like Alfalfa

Sadly get those feathers off and see what’s going on underneath. This is sadly going undiagnosed as still many vets know very little about it, they just diagnosed mud fever or mites which it may not be!

Why Groundwork?

(Feel free to share)

Groundwork is the foundation of all training.
Through groundwork, horses become more responsive and body aware through softness and understanding how to cope with pressure. These are foundational for a healthy relationship. Through regular groundwork, horses learn to be attentive to our cues - increasing their balance, proprioception, posture, healthy body patterns, strength, relaxation and learning how to respond to pressure.

A healthy nervous system is crucial as it allows the horse to remain calm, focused, and adaptable to change. When a horse's nervous system is regulated, they are able to handle new situations with more confidence and ease and increase their tolerance threshold, learning how to switch off from fight or flight quicker. Groundwork contributes to this by providing exercises that can help regulate the horse’s stress response and create calmer answers.

It also helps prepare and strengthen them for riding and ensures that they are emotionally happy whilst training. By establishing solid groundwork foundations, you can create a more responsive, balanced, and confident horse under saddle, leading to a more enjoyable partnership.

Problems can be solved through understanding and revisiting basics.
Issues like leading, feet picking up, tying, loading, napping, barging or mounting issues become non existent.

You realise you can isolate and move all areas of their body too, making teaching movements easier.

You can target compensation/weakness areas through posture work or increase strength and suppleness with lateral work and core stability work.

You can apply to obstacles and target new exercise variations on them.

And you can then teach cool tricks and stuff too....πŸ˜‰

If groundwork wants to be your winter focus once the nights start getting darker and the appeal of riding ebbs.....book yourself some regular private groundwork sessions or come along to our clinics.
