We have a similar nervous system, our brains fire the same way. We are exposed to similar emotional responses and have the same need for safety. Yet dogs are so often still expected to shut up and put up. Let's be a little gentler with the needs of our dogs shall we? We can help with that, drop us a line in the comments.

A huge well done to everyone who completed the first part of the recall classes. You were all fantastic. I think you all went away quite surprised by your dog's abilities to focus around distractions, all whilst having fun and learning πŸ˜€
I then went home to practise with my own girl, who also had great fun refreshing on her own recall skills 🐢

I have met this lovely pup for a couple of one to ones before he joins the Lifeskills group in September. We have covered puppy basics, such as enrichment, sleep, jumping, nipping, the during our second appointment we worked on focus and loose lead walking.

Nearly 10.30pm and little lady is still struggling with the heat.
I still can't believe the amount of people I have seen out walking their dogs in the full blown sun!
Now, I completely understand there are dogs who may not have access to a garden, in which case it should be a short toilet break in the shade.
I have seen the result of a dog with heat stroke (thankfully not my own) and it is just awful.
A dog has never died from missing a walk, but they can from just one walk in the heat!

It was an early start and the temperatures were just right. We started off with the loose lead class, both boys did amazing and remained engaged with their handlers which is something one of the boys was struggling with around other dogs!
It was then onto the puppy lifeskills course; both pups and their handlers were great. Brilliant timing with marking, which helps to capture the desired behaviour/positioning, there was lovely engagement from the pups and some impressive lead walking skills. Well done everyone πŸ˜ƒ

It was lovely to catch up with Boss. He has come such long way! He showed off his recall skills, lead walking was brilliant, remained calm and disengaged from other dogs and even kept it cool as a toddler came running towards him!

With it being it being so hot the last few days our walks have unfortunately been reduced. This evening, once it had cooled down, we both refreshed our Hoopers skills in the garden. It was lovely to spend some time with my own girl and it soon came back to us. At 5 years old she still enjoys learning new skills ❀️

Can dogs lick from affection ? Absolutely βœ…
Can they lick from feeling anxious ? Yes βœ…
Not all licking is appeasement licking. Appeasement licking is usually paired with other stress signals or calming signals and I know that may be tricky for some to notice.
This is one of those behaviours that dogs show us that can be very misread.
Affection ❓Greeting ❓Stress ❓

Licking is completely normal for dogs. It can be a healthy and socially acceptable behaviour between other dogs. It is relaxing, soothing and can be displayed for so many reasons.
However appeasement licking can also be shown to other dogs too, even ones they know and live with.

If you are in any doubt over why your dog licks either you or another dog, video the interaction.
Watch that video and look for tell tale signs of stress (some are mentioned in the graphic).

One of the worst feelings in the world is when I have to inform someone that those certain types of "kisses" do not come from a place of affection but can be from a place of fear, mistrust and stress.

We have been working on more calm with this cheeky chappy. We have introduced a plan to help him relax and provide more outlets for natural behaviours. Here he is enjoying a lovely pigs ear, which helped him to relax and stay out of mischief. Chewing can actually reduce stress and anxiety as it releases endorphins, it also reduces boredom.
