We don’t teach dogs that it’s a position to target, that needs constant reinforcement to hold, and that once I break focus on you, you just do one.
We teach a basic notion. It just means stay there. Reinforce this with pups and youngsters and each time the position is broken by them, back to the same spot and repeat. Reward when you return to a held position increasing duration.
Imagine how helpful ‘Sit’ can actually be in this sense. As opposed to just something a dog does before paw or a treat.

Axel started with Max Canine a little over a year ago.
Rehomed at 7 months to experienced Labrador owners but who were yet to experience the drive of a true working line.
Axel arrived with a huge hunting instinct and sheep worrying history. He comes for regular check in sessions and has boarded with us at Max Canine for a two week period.
Today he continued to demonstrate his new found impulse control and off lead heel work around distractions.
