I got speaking to a Lady this week about my dogs. She asked where I got them from and I explained that some were from breeders and some I have rehomed from rescue centres or from an individual.

This prompted the conversation about my stance on breeding vs rescue and me being questioned about my ‘compulsion to buy from a breeder when so many dogs are dying in rescue’.

My response to summarise:

The purchase of my well bred, purebred dog did not sentence another dog in rescue to death.
The purchase of my well bred, purebred dog did not cause an increase in the number of dogs in rescue.
Someone wanting a dog with a predictable temperament from healthy lineage did not cause another dog to not get rescued.
Someone’s meticulous research and support of only the most responsible of breeders is not the problem. They are not who you should be mad at. They are not who we should be pushing the blame onto.
I am not the one who brought these dogs into the world irresponsibly and left them in a rescue. Responsible breeders are not the ones who did that either.

It is my life, and my choice of what dog to bring into it as long as it’s conducted responsibly. Maybe I wanted a working therapy dog, a gundog, a show dog, or a companion puppy to raise, of a breed I am knowledgable about. No matter the reason, my choice to support a reputable breeder did not cause a rescue dog to die.
A breeder who health tests, temperament tests, studies pedigrees, proves a dog worthy of being bred, and only breeds when doing so, for the betterment of the breed, is of benefit and is not contributing to the number of dogs in rescue.

The number of homeless dogs in the UK is a problem, but it is not a problem caused by reputable breeders and those who purchase from them.
Your neighbour down the street who refuses to contain their entire male or unspayed female IS contributing to the problem.
Your friend who impulse bought a dog from Facebook IS contributing to the problem. That guy on Instagram pumping out the trendiest designer mix, crippled with genetical defects and health problems, as fast as he can IS contributing to the problem.
