****UPDATE - Access to Cottenham High Street has been restored and our Village Vet Cottenham practice will be open as of Monday, December 6, 2021***

Whilst vehicle access to Village Vet Cottenham is restricted during the High Street closures, please note that some of our surgeries have been moved to Village Vet Longstanton. This is to ensure that clients from both north and south of the divide can access veterinary care without getting caught up in the diversion and to prevent our Milton hospital from becoming overloaded.

Please also bear this in mind when ordering/collecting medications. If you already have appointments booked during this period, they will be during our open times and do not need to be rearranged. If the road opens earlier than planned, we will likely revert back to our normal hours. Thank you for your understanding.

It’s Veterinary Nursing Awareness month. Laura Fawcett RVN is our VV Cottenham nurse, holding lovely Nora who was neutered last week. She helps to care for your pets when they are with us for their operations.

This week we said an emotional farewell to Mardie, who has retired after nearly 30 years working at Village Vet Cottenham/Longstanton. As a new graduate, she spent a few years in general practice, gaining a Certificate in Radiology, before heading back to Cambridge Veterinary School. She studied first for an MSc and then a PhD, which she completed just after the birth of her first daughter. After a short break whilst her two eldest children were very young, she joined what was then Robin Hughes-Parry’s practice in 1992/3, and has been with us ever since. We all wish her a long and happy retirement - she will be very missed by staff, clients and pets alike. Enjoy your well earned rest, Mardie, and thank you so much for all your years of service to our community.

We’re proud to announce that we have recently been accredited to the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) Cat Friendly Clinic Scheme as a Bronze Clinic (Silver and Gold are only attainable by practices with imaging and overnight hospitalisation facilities).

We have been firm advocates of their minimal stress cat-handling & hospitalisation guidance and have had a cat only waiting area for many years, but now we have official accreditation.

Please see the message below regarding our new video and telephone consult service. To book an appointment, please call 01954 252122. All medications, including flea/worming treatments, can be ordered for collection from our Milton surgery via the pet portal or calling the usual Cottenham number.

Dear Pet Owner,

We hope you and your pet are keeping well while at home? We wanted to drop you a quick email to highlight some of the things we’re doing at Village Vet to support you through the coronavirus outbreak.

As you’re probably aware, we continue to monitor the situation and respond quickly to government advice and the professional guidance from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and British Veterinary Association. As a result, we are now focusing our efforts on the pets in urgent need of our care and are only physically open for urgent and emergency cases. We are regularly updating our website to reflect any changes and you can find this information here.

However, you can always call your local practice for any assistance and we will advise you on how your pets can still receive the care they need.

Prescriptions

If you need a prescription or a repeat prescription please call us. We may need more notice than usual, and the process may be different in terms of collection or delivery, so please bear with us.

Worming tablets, flea treatments and food

We recommend regular flea, tick and worming treatments in order to keep your pet healthy. If you need to order more please call us. Pet food can also be supplied. Again, please bear with us as the process for collection or delivery may be different at this time.

New video consultation service

We recognise that many of our clients are anxious about supporting their pet’s health while movement is restricted and we’re in isolation. In light of this situation, we’ve recently launched a Video Consultation Service – which uses technology to provide general advice, help monitor and update treatment for pets already in our care. In the first instance we ask that you contact the practice and we will advise you of the best way to manage your request – which could be via a video consultation. Our usual consultation fee would apply – you can find out more by visiting https://villagevet.co.uk/services/video-consultations/

Other useful information and guidance

We’ve also written hints and tips and things to consider while you’re at home with your pet. This includes exercise techniques for your pet, how to manage their weight and the importance of mental stimulation during this period of isolation. See our website www.villagevet.co.uk/news for more information.

The health and wellbeing of our patients, clients and staff is our number-one priority. The situation is changing daily and we’re reacting to this to minimise the impact from spreading this virus to more people while supporting your pet’s health needs. If you have any concerns or require any advice, please do contact your local Village Vet practice on 01954 252122 or 0845 500 4247 (out of hours).

Thank you for your understanding and patience at this time. We appreciate the words of support and encouragement we have received and look forward to welcoming you and your pet back into the practice when it is safe to do so.

From everyone in the Village Vet team.

Many of us take our pets on holiday to Europe and there has been some uncertainty surrounding this with Brexit. Here is the latest information and it is, for now, good news for travelling furry friends.

It was announced yesterday the current pet passport scheme will be continuing in its present form during a transition period lasting until December 31, 2020.

The official guidance can be found here https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad and Village Vet is happy to help with everything which needs to be done, including, of course, providing pet passports.

If you are looking to travel after January 1, 2021, please take a look at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/pet-travel-to-europe-after-brexit or give us a call. We are always happy to help.

Have you seen Monty? Histon Road area. Please contact Kylie Ray (see her Cottenham village Facebook group post) if you have any sightings.

STILL MISSING - please check your sheds etc.

Monty, our grey and white cat, didn’t come home yesterday which is really unusual. We live on Histon Rd, not far from Foundry Close and Dunstal Field, in Cottenham. If anyone has seen him, can you please let me know? He has a habit of creeping into garages when your back is turned, so might have snuck in somewhere and got locked in. Thank you!

This very special little dog is 14-year-old Winston. He is visiting the ARC for laser therapy to help manage a condition called westie lung disease. Winston is no stranger to our physiotherapist, Leanne...he spent several years attending physio appointments to help him cope with paralysis of his back legs.
