As Christmas is a time for giving, for every physiotherapy consult seen during the month of December, Surrey Veterinary Physio will be donating Β£4 to the ❄️

This year I have chosen a charity who are currently looking after and providing amazing treatment to someone very close to me. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to give back to them this Christmas.

I look forward to seeing all of my lovely clients this December πŸ’•

Adorable Kipling 🩷🐾
Mr Kipling belongs to one of the wonderful Vets I work alongside, we are working together after starting to notice some subtle changes in Kipling's gait.
On assessment we found some restrictions in his left pelvic region, leading through his thoracolumbar spine eventually into his right shoulder. We now have an actionable plan to reduce these restrictions and compensations, with a view then eventually begin strengthening to hopefully prevent further repeats 🐾

Working with a Veterinary Surgeon who is open and positive towards the benefits of physiotherapy for animals makes me extremely happy. It fosters team collaboration, a forward thinking approach and overall, hopefully, a better outcome for the animals in our care.

'She is just old now'
'He doesn't want to be touched anymore'
'she doesn't look after herself anymore'

Far too many times these phrases are used - but why are these things happening?
Why has your cat's behaviour changed so much?
⚑Could the reason be pain?

Older age is not a reason for behaviour change, but it is associated with senior cats, such as Osteoarthritis (OA).

πŸ“ƒRecent studies have shown 61% of cats over the age of 6 years have OA in at least one joint. Rising to 90% of cats over the age of 12.

Some signs of Chronic Pain in cats:
- Spending less time outside
- Less time playing or hunting
- Less grooming or scratching
- Avoiding using the stairs
- Toileting outside the litter box
- No longer allowing to be stroked.

Chronic pain can have detrimental effects on welfare.

Think about what your cat is trying to tell you with these changes and seek help to support them.

Happy Halloween πŸŽƒπŸ‘»

Remember to keep our furry friends safe over the next couple of days and if needed talk to your Vet practice if you need additional support across firework season.

🧠 -It is also important to be aware, in dogs, there is significant evidence that shows there can be a link between noise sensitivity and uncontrolled pain.

A lovely catch up with beautiful Bertie today πŸ₯°

At the start of this year, I spent a lot of time with Bertie for intensive physiotherapy post IVDD (spinal) surgery. He recovered fantastically and it had been 5 months since I last saw him.
However, his carer got in touch after noticing a few minor changes. We are now going to begin working on these to hopefully avoid them becoming bigger changes.

Pippa and Nelson πŸ’• are brother and sister, I am lucky enough to have treated them both over the past year.
Pippa for Hip Dysplasia and Nelson for Spondylosis, both are absolute stars who always brighten my day.
They are also very lucky to have a wonderful dog mum who is a current Vet Student, she tracks their progress as well as completing all their therapeutic exercise and treatments in between sessions. Hopefully, this is also showing our future Veterinary Surgeons the benefit of physiotherapy in animals 🐾

🌟Star of the Month - Iggy 🌟

Apart from being the most adorable, happy boy, Iggy has blown me away since starting physiotherapy.
Yesterday he had his measurements done again to track progress - not only has his muscle mass grown, his goniometry readings now show both of his elbows have flexion within normal parameters πŸ’•

I can't wait to see how far we can take this boy.
These results have come from pure dedication from him and his carers. They have made fantastic home adaptations to support him as well as religiously following his set therapeutic exercise plan

Well done guys πŸ’• - proud to be part of Team Iggy

Never forget that in-between hello and goodbye, there was love. So much love.

One thing I have learnt over the years is that grief is not linear and everyone handles loss in their own way - there is no correct way to grieve.

I lost one of my beautiful girls 🐱 at the end of last week, since then I have had moment of intense sadness and moments of great joy, I am sure this will continue for a time going forward but at the centre of all these emotions are wonderful memories of a beautiful life.

If you are also currently grieving the loss of a loved pet, be patient with yourself and never apologise for the individual way that you process the loss πŸΎπŸ’•

Amazing Athena πŸ’œ
This beautiful lady has started physiotherapy after a shoulder injury. Over the past 6 weeks we have been working hard to get her more comfortable before gradually starting to slowly rebuild her strength. Her carers have also been working hard to manage her weight to hopefully help prevent any reinjury occurring.

Having an active dog on rest is not easy, but Athena's carers have been amazing at following our plan as well as finding other ways to keep her mind active. Hard work pays off 🌟

This weekend I won an award for Best Abstract/Research Poster at a conference πŸ† (and I am feeling pretty proud)

I presented a poster on 'The use of physiotherapy as an adjunctive therapy in Rabbits with Osteoarthritis' at the annual conference of The Association of Zoo and Exotic Veterinary Nurses πŸ¦’

The results? Rabbits, likely many, if not all, species can benefit from physiotherapy and can engage in it 🐰

I LOVE my dogs and cats but physiotherapy in 'exotic' species is definitely something I would like to explore further. So please do get in touch if you think I can help one of your pets.

What would your pet say to you? πŸ’

'He is being naughty'
'She is just old now'

But have you actually thought about the real reason it is happening?
⚑ What if pain is the reason?⚑

Cats are very clean animals, toileting in a different place than normal can be upsetting for them as well as you.
However, if they are in too much pain to comfortably get to or use their litter box, they may not have another option.

πŸ“Recent studies have shown 61% of cats over the ages of 6 years old have Osteoarthritis in at least one joint. Rising to 90% of cats over the age of 12.

Think about what your cat may be trying to tell you with these changes and seek help to support them.

This help maybe in the form of pain relief, laser therapy, physiotherapy or even just simple and low cost modifications to their litter trays. Your Vet team will be able to advise you on what is most suitable for your cat.

Listen to what your cat is trying to tell you and support them accordingly πŸ’›πŸ±

This is your friendly reminder that cats benefit from physiotherapy as well ✨

Handsome Lysander visits once a month for management of his Osteoarthritis, as I am also a Registered Veterinary Nurse, we also have check in chats and checks for his other ongoing Chronic medical conditions. This helps to ensure continuity of care as well as spotting any subtle changes which he may need to see the Vet for.

At 16 years old, I would say Lysander is looking pretty incredible.

If you are looking for a dog that always works hard and tries his then Paddy is your boy πŸ•

I am currently treating Paddy for conservative management of a cruciate ligament injury and he is powering through his rehab πŸ’™

His treatment consists of electrotherapies, exercise adjustments as well as a therapeutic exercise plan for in between visits. All of which he completes with bundles of energy.

Roxy is one of the most keen dogs I see when it comes to therapeutic exercise. I work with Roxy to keep her strong and mobile through her golden years. In return, she keeps me smiling with her enthusiasm and energy.
