Today we had the absolute pleasure of meeting Bumble, a sweet soul who came to us in urgent need of help. He arrived from a previous groomer, visibly uncomfortable, and sadly, covered in tight, painful mats โ especially around his back legs and private areas.
The previous groomer told Bumbleโs owners that โheโs a double-coated breed, and you donโt trim mats.โ Even more shockingly, they claimed itโs normal for this breed to be matted โ and did not brush, remove, or even attempt to manage the matting. This was not only incorrect โ it was neglectful.
๐ But letโs make one thing clear:

They were incredibly caring and responsible, doing everything they were told to do, trusting the previous groomerโs advice. But despite all that โ their instincts told them something was wrong. Bumble seemed uncomfortable and withdrawn, and it just didnโt feel right. And they were absolutely right to listen to their intuition. Thatโs when they found us โ and weโre so glad they did.

Matting is when fur becomes so tangled and compacted that it starts to pull on the skin, restrict movement, and trap moisture, dirt, and bacteria. In severe cases like Bumbleโs, mats can lead to:
โข Skin infections
โข Reduced blood circulation
โข Painful bruising and sores
โข Urine burns and faecal contamination in private areas

Yes, dogs like Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers, and Huskies have double coats โ but:
โ๏ธ You can and should shave them when there is severe matting to the skin
โ๏ธ Shaving is sometimes the only humane solution when brushing would cause pain
โ๏ธ Health, comfort, and skin condition always come before coat length
We never shave a double-coated dog for fun or convenience โ but when a dog is matted to this extent, there is no ethical alternative. Leaving them in that state causes stress, pain, and even infection.

We spent several hours carefully and gently removing every mat from Bumbleโs coat โ working slowly and patiently, with breaks and lots of reassurance. He was an absolute angel through it all โ brave, trusting, and so sweet.

Grooming is not just about looking good โ itโs about feeling good and staying healthy. A knowledgeable groomer doesnโt just wash and dry โ weโre trained to recognise problems, care for coat types properly, and above all, put your dogโs wellbeing first.
