Last weekend I had the pleasure of giving the beautiful Denny a blanket clip 💈
It was only her second ever clip & she stood like a rock as if she’d been doing it her whole life 🌟
Absolute credit to her owner Lilly who has done a fantastic job of producing her and doing all the ground work to make sure she is used to clippers and standing nice and still - you make my job so much easier & enjoyable!! 🙌🏼👏🏼
It is so so important for young horses to have good experiences with everything, as it really does set them up for life 🤍

Side note… Den is rising 5 and standing at 17’1 making me look extra tiny…
She reminds me very much of my not so lil lady 🤔 who is absolutely NOT allowed to get that big 🦕🫣🤣

Couldn’t have said it better myself Baxter Equine Services 👏🏼👏🏼‼️

Please take note - we are not superhuman and we are not invincible (although we would like to be! 🦸🏻‍♀️)

I’m sure that most of you have seen this video - it always tends to circulate around clipping season!

If your horse misbehaves - whether it be barging, biting, striking out with front legs, or kicking out with hind legs - you must tell your clipper/farrier/physio/vet/saddler, or any other professional you have employed to handle your horse in any way.

Horses are quick, and strong, and most of us are not super human enough to dodge equine limbs successfully every single time.

If your horse acts in this manner, it is your responsibility as an owner to work with your horse to make it comfortable in whatever situation it is in, or make sure your horse is properly sedated if this is not possible.

Proper sedation is -
• Intravenous sedative administered by a vet
• Domoseden which is an oral sedation which is bought from your vet, and can be administered by yourself - this however doesn’t work for all horses, so you must be sure that it works for yours, and the correct amount is administered in the correct way.

Improper sedation is -
• Sedalin
• Relaquin
• ACP
• CBD/Hemp products
• Magic calmer pastes
• Calming cookies
• Twitching (ear/nose/neck)

I am more than happy to stop a clip (at any point!) if an owner has failed to tell me about a horse’s behaviour, or if I feel it is unsafe to continue for any reason - my safety is the top of my priority list, as if I get injured, then I can’t work.

What’s other professional’s policies? I’d be interested to hear of any experiences you’ve had, and how you’ve dealt with it!

I cannot stress enough how important it is to BE HONEST ‼️

This post is spot on! 👏🏼

I now only have a couple of spaces left for the last week of October and am taking bookings well into November, December & even the new year 😅

Please remember to book in advance to avoid disappointment 🗓️
And if you can get in with someone that same week ask yourself why 😉

Do your research before booking a clipper 🐴💈✂️

I’ve had a few messages over the past 3 weeks from people who have hired someone to clip their horse, and unfortunately it’s gone wrong for various reasons - inexperience, incorrect equipment etc.

Take the time to have a look at their ‘clipping portfolio’ - zoom in on pictures, have a look at their lines & the finish etc.

Myself, and other professional clippers have insurance, multiple sets of and variety of machines, a variety of blades, and years of experience (I now have 20 years under my belt!)

Please make sure to book in advance - most of us have around a 3-4 week wait.

🧼Bathing prior to clipping is essential for finish, blade longevity and the comfort of your horse 🧼

To wash or not to wash prior to clipping is a topic we see debated every winter, the common theme being not wanting to wash because of the cold, not having a hot wash and solarium set up etc. but also not being prepared for what happens when you clip a dirty coat

❌ Blades may not last an entire clip
❌Blades may over heat and need to be constantly cleared of hair
❌ Machines may over heat due to excess strain

How to prepare the coat for clipping ⬇️

📍Wash your horse using a scrubby brush ensuring to get down to the skin (this is where the blades clip after all)
📍Rinse your horse thoroughly - product left in the coat will also do harm to your blades
📍Allow your horse 24 hours to completely dry and brush through the coat before clipping

❌Avoid coat oils and sprays prior to clipping these clog up your blades and do not make it easier for your clippers and are not used in place of bathing
❌Never clip a wet horse 🤯
❌Just running a hose over the horse is not washing

🚿If you cannot wash for what ever reason grooming can be done in its place in the lead up to clipping. A good groom using a variety of brushes to get through the coat. And hot clothing for a week in the run up to clipping to draw the grease out of the coat. This is not as effective as bathing but will help in a pinch🚿

Also remember you can spot wash ie if you’re only doing a Bib only wash the area you plan on clipping, with a bucket and sponge if necessary. ✅

What do you do before clipping ⬇️⬇️⬇️
